We had a really great holiday in Alpbach in the winter, and stayed in this lovely, clean bed and breakfast. The owners are really friendly, but the walk into the village (up the mountain, and its steep!) nearly killed us, especially after a day of strenuous skiing. During the day there are no facilities at the Pension Achensee as I found when I sustained an injury and was stranded in the Pension for a couple of days half way up a mountain with no access to food or even a drink. You need a car to stay here.
We love it in Alpbach and return here frequently. In winter its really bustling and vibrant, in summer its quiet and peaceful with good walking and cycling. Bliss!

Unless you are seriously interested in walking then Alpbach in summer is not the place to go. However, Pension Achensee is a really nice place, Frieda the owner cannot do enough to help. Rooms are really spacious with a huge balcony, plenty of room for 3 beds, a small bathroom and lots of storage space. Food is really good - all home made, buffet breakfast with the usual, 3 course dinner with no choice, but varied during the week.
It's quite a walk from the village, up a very steep hill, and there's not much to see or do once you get there - the whole valley is quite remote, although there is a fairly good local bus service. Quite a few bars etc, but most not open in Summer and those that are close about 8:30pm - so not a resort for nightbirds. Mountain biking available in village as are guided walks from the tourist office - but be warned as the nature ramble takes 7 hours and climbs the highest mountain in the valley.
All in all, a different holiday for us, one which 15 year old son really enjoyed, particularly mountain biking and walking, but for us parents who wanted to laze and relax for a week, maybe not!
