This is a relatively small hotel, built in a charming chalet style. It is one of Crystal's Club Active hotels, and certainly lives up to it's name as it is a dedicated activity centre. River rafting departs from the river that runs by the hotel, although for white water you need to travel out quite a way.
The reps were good. They run a number of guided walks and bike rides from the hotel. I went on one guided walk with my husband, which I found rather challenging as I'm not very fit, but my husband had no bother with. My advice if you're unfit is to get a couple of nordic walking poles, as they really help and you won't be alone as many walkers use them.
A limited number of bikes are available, but you have to be up early to get one. In the end we walked everywhere as we were too lazy to get up in time! Other guests went paragliding, riding cable cars and so on and told us lots of good things about their activities. In a week it's hard to fit everything in, but as it's a small hotel you make friends and hear about most things over dinner.
Be warned that Kirchdorf, whilst an absolutely gorgeous place, is very small, so if you're not prepared to be active, there won't be a lot for you to do. However, it's a walker's, biker's and adrenalin junkie's paradise.
Food is basic, but tasty and plentiful. There's a cold buffet breakfast, a packed lunch of a roll, cereal bar, fruit and a juice drink, and a three course evening meal. There is no choice, except for a veggie option, but we met a picky teenager in the family who sat with us who the hotel did their best to accomodate by removing veg, substituting bread for things and so on. My husband and I really liked the food.
i have to warn you that there is a fly problem, due to the hotel's situation in an agricultural area by the river. I noted several measures that had been put in place to kill them, but you will benefit from packing some fly spray unless you're willing to decipher cans printed in German.
Tap water is drinkable and v. nice - claimed to be the best in the world.
Nightlife in Kirchdorf is limited to the hotel bar, althogh one night there was a free classical concert in the village square, so look for signs advertising this and watch out for the local teens dressed in traditional costume and dancing on the benches! Oh, and buy some schnappes from the lady who comes round as it's nicer than that in the hotel...
If you're doing enough activities you'll be glad of the quiet nights - I certainly was!
The activities we bought through Crystal were good, but the trip to Salzburg was too short and broken up by the guided walk. If you must go, skip the guided walk and save yourself 7 euros - that way you have some time to explore. however, if I had my time again, I'd take the local bus to Kitzbuhel and ride the cable cars instead. Not that Salzberg isn't nice, but we couldn't do it justice in the time available. We also did the Tyrolean evening, which was quite a laugh and as I mentioned before, there isn't much else on to compete for your evenings.
Anyway, it's a beautiful place, and you'll love it if you're active. I'm grossly unfit and I enjoyed myself, but if you have actual mobility problems it may not be the place for you.
