Mayhofen is a picturesque village in the Zillertal..we have been going there for over 10 years both with children and as a couple.
There are ample things to do for all ages if you buy the local Z-Ticket it entitles you to free travel on trains and buses up and down the valley from Jenbach to the Hintertux Glacier(with the first stage of the Glacier).
The ticket also entitles you to one trip per day on 12 cable cars in the Ziller Valley it is obtainable from the Penkenbahn cable car station or the train station and is worth every Euro...(available from June to October)
you can fill every day with different trips and walks both flat and mountainous also available are day trips with the local coach company Chritophorus-Reisen who go to Italy or to BerchesGarten in Germany.
Eating out is easy as there are ample cafes and restaurants serving a wide range of local and child friendly foods (the cakes are highly reccomended), I could go on for ages but not everyone has the same tastes so you woulnt know unless you tried a few dishes..
Mayrhofen is well worth a visit as the people are so friendly and helpful and the scenery is breathtaking

The ONLY downside we found was the lack of evening entertainment, but seeing as we went in the height of summer, what did we expect!?! Saying that though, we went on excusions EVERY day and managed to get in trips to German and Italy too in our week. We've both been on lots of holidays to the usual places, so thought this was somewhere different, and we had such a fantastic time, we'd most probably go back there. Maybe not to Mayrhofen as we've heard that Kitzbuhl would have suited us better, but Mayrhofen is very very pretty and its just like something out of the films...
The accomodation was superb. Owned by the family Obermair, they treated us very well, provided breakfast for us when we had early morning trips and the bread (brot!) is scrummy. They were very friendly and worked very hard, owning the local garage and a cafe on top of the nearby dam. The family have 5 young boys so it is very family orientated.
Our room had a lovely view, overlooking a vast field (well everywhere was lovely views!). We took some fantastic snaps and throughly enjoyed our stay.
We would definiately recommend this resort for families and for those of you that enjoy walking as there's plenty to be had of that. Whilst we are a relatively young couple, there was still plenty for us to do, which is why we felt it was the best holiday ever!
The rooms in the Gluck Auf were a bit small, but you don't stay in your room in Austria.

The breakfast was superb, seemingly unlimited rolls were on offer, and a good selection of cheese, meats and other fillings. Dinner was taken in the village centre 10 minutes walk away at the Tyrol cafe, the 3 course meals were ok.5-10 minutes slow walk down the road were the 2 cable cars, The Penkenbahn and Ahornbahn, both cost 14.40 euros, or 12.90 with a 'guestcard' which is automatically given to you when you check in to your accommodation. If you go on a clear day the views from both the cable car stations are fantastic, and there are signposted walks to follow too.
In Mayrhofen itself there is not a lot to do,especially at night, but it was the last week of summer season, apparently (18/9 - 25/9)and the village centre was very quiet at night(good)We went on 2 excursions, 1 to Lake Garda via the Brenner Pass(a 6am start)which was hot and crowded, although the boat trip across the lake itself was nice. And a trip to Krimml waterfall which was by far the better trip of the 2, coming back via Kitzbuhel. These were booked in the resort at the Ingham's welcome meeting, i was surprised that you were not discouraged to use the local transport, but even given timetables which made a refreshing change. One last point,in some cases the excursions are cheaper than using public transport,Innsbruck being just one example.
We had a great time in Austria and would recommend it to anyone who likes mountain scenery.
