Saalbach is just gorgeous - it's probably much busier and livelier in the skiing season which it's very geared up for, with all the lifts / cablecars and ski shops. But we were there in the summer when there's not many people about - it looks lovely as there are flowers everywhere. Great location for miles of hiking / walking routes nearby and very near to the lake resort of Zell am See which is well worth seeing.

We stayed at the Hotel Kohlmais in Saalbach for our honeymoon. We chose this village (and Austria in general) as its stunning scenery is beautiful and romantic.

The Kohlmais is a relatively small family-run hotel and unlike many of the other hotels / guesthouses in the village it's not set along the main road. This is a real plus point as it is situated on a small hill in an elevated position so you can see a lot more than just traffic going by. From the room's balcony (ask for a room on an upper floor) you get a fantastic view over the village and across the valley, and it's south-facing position gets the sun all day. The rooms were clean and spacious so no problems there. The facilities basic but adequate and it has a nice little indoor pool, though it was quite cold. Didn't use the steam room / sauna so can't comment on those.

The family that run the place are friendly enough and their polite teenage kids work hard serving in the restaurant. Which brings me to the food which was excellent. Only a couple of choices on the menu each day but everything was really well cooked and very tasty indeed. No complaints there at all.

Overall, I would recommend Saalbach and the Kohlmais hotel to anyone.

The Alpen, run by the Family Thomas offers 4 star and doesn't disappoint. Mainly a Ski season hotel, it is quiet in Summer. It is situated in the small village close to the centre and two cable cars. Food is superb and served by professional but friendly staff. All the staff from Herr Thomas down are really warm and helpful.

Facilities include inside pool, free bike hire, personal mountain guide, big screen TV in the large bar lounge and dancing at least once a week with Joe and Ray.

Large well appointed hotel with immaculate room service but with the personal touch - even the maids smile!

Walking is excellent and village life is quiet but entertaining with local festivals etc. Golf etc available and Herr Thomas will even give you a game (He owns the Course). Local bus runs to Zell am See lake town and a few miles to twin village Hinterglemm with another two cable cars giving access to the mountains.

For an easy relaxing holiday with excellent service and dining I cannot recommend this Hotel more highly.
