Probably the worst hotel I have ever stayed at.

The rooms are so small, we had to climb over our bed to get from one side of the room to the other. The bathroom smelled of sewage and mould and most sanitary ware was either broken or so filthy we wouldn't dare touch it. We stayed there for two weeks and our towels and sheets were NEVER changed once. The first time we went into our room, the floor was so dirty I had to visit a local supermarket to buy some cleaning products to basically clean both the bathroom and the floor myself. Not how I had imagined I was going to spend my Christmas and New Year's holiday.

In brochures For example, in the Thomson brochure it states that every room has an ensuite bathroom. As a matter of fact, our friends (a couple) had to stay in a room with no bathroom and use a different room at the end of a long corridor that those guys had recently converted into a toilet/shower room.

The quality of the food was truly atrocious (everything out of a packet and microwaved) we ended up eating out almost every night. And as for the après ski lunch you are supposedly entitled to if you have booked on a half board basis (you will find it advertised in Thomson and Crystal brochures) ...well don't count on it! You only get it if the chef, who is also the hotel cleaner (NICE!) finds some time in between her duties to prepare it. When we complained to the manager he laughed and replied: Welcome to Fawlty Towers! If you don't like it you can leave! We were gob smacked, that guy was actually laughing at us for choosing to stay at his hotel.

We then decided to get in touch with the local rep, who couldn't care less. She gave us a complaint form to fill in and asked us to follow it up with a complaint letter to Thomson once we returned to England. No one ever informed us that we would have to check out at 10.00 in the morning on our last day. We just assumed that check out time would be at 12.00, which is the standard in every hotel around the world. Anyway, at exactly 10.05 on our last day the hotel manager barged into our room screaming that if we didn't evacuate the room within the next five minutes he would either call the police or throw all our personal belongings out of the door himself. We left the room 10 minutes after that incident only to be presented with a huge bar bill at the reception. We obviously paid it as we did spend two nights drinking at the hotel bar but when I asked how can they justify charging 5 Euros for a small glass of diet coke, the manager swore at me. ( I am not going to mention what he said as I am too embarrassed to even type it). He was obviously mostly dissatisfied that we had complained about the poor hygiene a few days before. We paid almost £5k for our flights and hotel accommodation...that's no way to treat a paying customer.

The resort itself is magnificent. Zell am see is one of the most beautiful, picturesque skiing resorts you will ever visit. Brilliant snow conditions and a plethora of slopes for both beginners and intermediates. One of the best selling points of Zell am See, is its après ski activities. Excellent eating out and a vibrant night life. There is a big number of lovely hotels both in the town centre and the surrounding area at very sensible prices. Just don't make the mistake we made and stay at the Traube. It almost ruined our holiday.

Hotel Traube was a hotel offered by Thomson as a late booking to Zell am See. The hotel was supposed to be 3T or 3* and we were on a half board basis. The hotel is in the pedestrian part of Zell opposite an all night bar and restaurants.

When we arrived on Saturday night there were a group of about a dozen 20 something men who were drinking all night in the bar opposite. They were extremely noisy and one tried to get into one of the hotel rooms occupied by another guest. The guest then set off the fire alarm and we all went down to the reception. When we tried to get out of the hotel (we didn't know it was a false alarm at the time) the handle to the door broke off and when we checked the other fire door it was broken. A guest tried to phone the police but they had switched off the phones! There was no-one resident in the hotel to give instructions and no fire regulations in the rooms.

The rooms were extremely poor quality - more like a hostel with no room to move and broken sanitary ware with mouldy showers. The food was awful - the first night the meal consisted of packet soup with the main meal of one large fish finger and two potatoes! We all complained to Thomson who said that the hotel had a fire certificate but they got the manager to change the lock on one fire door and fix the other then they gave us a different room which wasn't really that much better but they refused to move us to another hotel.

it was definitely the worst hotel we have ever stayed at in the 40 or so years that we have both been travelling abroad. Zell itself is a lovely place but our holiday was ruined. Thomson should never have used such a poor standard of hotel and they should have informed us that it was in a 'very lively' part of town. We will never use Thomson again.
