The Hotel Margaretha is a small family run Austrian Hotel in the lovely lakeside village of St.Wolfgang. The food, service and friendliness of the staff was excellent. The Hotel has been refurbished to a high standard, giving it a modern, elegant look. Every area was spotlessly clean. The lakeside area is separated from the lake by a minor road but this is not a problem as the road is quiet. The Hotel is a perfect base for walking, running or exploring the region as it is near two ferry stations and the bus stop. We have been to Austria 3 times and this is the best location for walking that we have found. The information given at the 'Information Centre' was excellent. We were given leaflets on local walks, a good local map of the area and we bought a booklet on running routes for 1 euro 20. We were also given bus and ferry timetables. Armed with this information we had enough choice of walks to keep us occupied for about a month - a pity we only had 7 days!

St.Wolfgang is a lovely little village with plenty of eating and drinking places near the centre. A local band plays twice a week in the centre and there is a small festival with bands and entertainment once a week. It is not a place for people who want a lively time but for people who enjoy the simple things in life - it is just perfect.
The access around the lake via the ferries and buses is excellent so it is easy to walk one direction and return via another mode of transport. The bus drivers and ferry operators all seem to speak English and are very helpful. The walking routes in Austria are second to none, virtually idiot proof - every time you reach a junction there is a proper signpost with direction, name of destination and approximate walking time - we didn't get lost once!
The cog railway is near the Hotel and the views from the top are spectacular if you get a clear day. It can be very cold at the top - it was 6 degrees even in August.

The ski lift up the Zwolferhorn from St.Gilgen (reached by ferry) is also a fantastic ride and there is a 3 mile panaramic walk around the top with wonderful views.

If you go to Austria, even in the Summer months, be prepared for variable weather. Do take waterproofs and some warm clothing as the weather can and does change quickly. We love the scenery and pace of life in Austria and can't wait to go back again.
