The hotel itself is ideally situated in the Patershol district of Ghent. This is a part of town with a large selection of bars and restaurants all of which are within easy walking distance. Directly opposite the hotel you will find a good choice of friendly little places with a variety of styles and prices, from the little bar where you can just sit outside and watch the Gantenaars pass by (and chat to Sarah the rugby playing waitress)to the more sophisticated establishment serving, quite pricey, steak fondues which has its own private terrace on the river behind. Fifty yards further down the road and you come to the beginning of the centre of town proper where there really is something for everybody.
Reaching the hotel itself is relatively easy. By car, although you need to work out your route first, the way is reasonably free of the worst of the one way systems which can confuse, and there is plenty of parking available at the hotel. When arriving it is best to park right around the rear of the building as the check-in desk is then more convenient. If you reach Ghent by train or bus then the No 1 tram will take you to the Castle Gravensteen ( 1 Euro) from where it is just a short walk.
The rooms here, or at least the one we had, was fairly small but they are perfectly adequately equipped. Our room in the building behind the main part of the hotel was also very quiet as there is less road noise in this part.
The Bar end Residents Lounge are also fairly small and for a hotel of this size quite disappointing, but with all the other distractions in Ghent I suppose they presume that you wonT be spending much time inside anyway.
Breakfast here is the typical Belgian buffet type, so you can start off with your bacon and eggs, work your way through the cheeses and meats, and finish off with croissants or other pastries. Coffee here is also good.
As we had no problems during our stay I could not comment on the staff but those that we did come across in the Bar and at Reception were always polite and efficient. As is usual in Belgium they all also speak perfect English.
