We stayed at he Ostend Hotel at the end of December, 2004/beginning of January, 2005 for their 'Old and New' package, to celebrate the New Year. Guests at the Ostend seem to be mainly Belgian and British, with a small number from other countries.

We booked directly with the hotel - they handle telephone enquiries efficiently, and all the staff speak English, but they do not seem to reply to emails. Check-in was efficient, and the staff were generally very friendly and helpful.

The rooms are not spacious and are fairly basic in their furnishings, but the beds are comfortable and everything is clean. The shower rooms (no baths in the double rooms) are tiny but again clean, with limited toiletries provided, and towels are changed daily. The Ostend did not provide separate no-smoking rooms, but we understand that this policy is being changed in 2005.

Our price was for half board, which included an unexciting Continental breakfast, and a pleasant, if unusual, buffet evening meal. The food was probably the least attractive part of this hotel - for example, one of the evening meal offerings on New Year's Eve was kangaroo steak, and on New Year's Day, catfish. Not everybody's choice of main course, but there were alternatives.

There was entertainment provided on each evening. On the first, a duo in the bar, which was very pleasant, on New Year's Eve an excellent group who were still playing when we went to bed (at 2 am), and on New Year's Day a DJ in the bar - this was rather loud, and we went out anyway.

The hotel is situated in a fairly quiet back street, but close to the prom and about 5-10 minutes' walk from the pedestrianised shopping centre. There are a number of bars, restaurants and cafes around, so regular sustenance is not a problem. The market square has all sorts of snack foods available from little stalls, but watch the prices as these are often higher than in the surrounding cafes - and in these you can sit down in the warm! Seafood lovers should walk along the prom and admire the displays of cold seafood available from the various stalls - and at very reasonable prices.

We took a train ride to Bruges on one of the days - there are three an hour, very clean and punctual, and the cost was less than £3 each return. There was no language difficulty as the station staff all seem to speak excellent English.

We compared the price we paid for our rooms, including a car crossing through the Channel Tunnel, with the price quoted in the brochure of one of the coach operators. We found that, in return for the inconvenience of having to drive, we saved more than £200 for the four of us - and we had more time at the hotel, and we also had that little bit of extra space to take home some Belgian beer!

Overall, a reasonably-priced hotel in a good location in Ostend, with friendly, helpful staff, but the occasional odd offerings of food. We would be quite happy to go back there again at some time in the future.
