We took the ferry from Dover, and drove through France accross to Belgium. We found our BandB following the expert instructions given by Annette and Christian the hosts, from their internet site.

We wanted to travel to Ypres, to discover more about the Great War, and to trace my husband's grandfather's resting place as he fell at the Battle of Menin Road on 20th September 1917. It was a very poignant trip for us, made so much more enjoyable by Annette's local knowledge of the whole area, as she has been a tour guide for 20 years.
The BandB is set in a small village named Dikkebus, just about 4 km from Ypres. The setting is so tranquil and peaceful, just sitting in the beautiful garden is bliss.

There are only four double rooms, however they are all extrememly comfortable, with ensuite facilities and teaandcoffee, kettle and fridge on the landing for everyone's use, including a PC with internet.
The breakfast is very good, with everyone sharing the table. We made friends with people of all nationalities and shared jokes and sight-seeing tips around the table.

There is an extremely good restaurant at the end of the road, named Tommies. The food is wonderful and so are the staff. The only downside for us though, was that they were shut on the monday and tuesday of our visit!
The town of Ypres is so beautiful and the locals are so friendly. We visited ";In Flanders Fields"; Museum which was extremely heart rendering and thought provoking.
There are many chocolatiers in Ypres, selling a huge variety of chocolates, one of the other guests donated a spare suitcase to us, as she had had to buy a bigger one to take her souvenirs home in, so we carried our chocolate gifts home in that!!

The Menin Gate is a wonderful monument to visit especially as it lists 56,000 soldiers of various nationalities, who fell in the Great War before August 1917. Each night at 8pm, the roads are closed, and the last post is played. This can be extremely popular so it is best to get there early as many people like to lay a poppy wreath in rememberence of loved ones, during the ceremony.

We were fortunate enough to accompany Annette on a guided tour of the Battlefields, trenches and lastly Tyn Cott Cemetery where my husband's grandfather is remembered on the wall. This was a very moving moment for us all, as it was about 6.30pm and the sun was shining beautifully in the cemetery. The English flowers were in bloom, and we were the only visitors at that time of day. Seeing all of the graves, and thousands of names on the walls made us all realise what these men had to endure so as we could have our freedom. I say ";men";, however on close inspection of the names on the memorials, many were just boys of 17 or 18. Heartbreaking to read.

A wondeful memorable trip, which we will definitely be taking again to visit the places that we didn't have time to explore this time.
