"Central Sofia"
Overall Resort Rating:
Sofia is a nice pleasant city, that has a good selection of value restaurants and some very good ones at a low price. There are free museums in Sofia to visit, as well as the market which is also interesting. It also serves tourists who want to visit other parts of Eastern Europe very well. What lets the place down is that it is quite a poor country but there are signs of prosperity and improving living standards. I liked that in Sofia almost everything was within walking distance. Main roads include Makedonia Boulevard and a trip to Sofia is not complete without making a visit to the Mall of Sofia which is very close to the Hostel Mostel.

A "must see" for any trip to Bulgaria is the Rila Monastery. Situated in the beautiful mountains of southwest Bulgaria, the Rila is the country's most visited tourist destination and a holy place for Bulgarians. Stepping into this ancient wooden Orthodox Church transports the visitor back into early Bulgarian history. The monastery was founded in the 10th century by Ivan Rilski (John of Rila) and the monastery has evolved through time to become one of Bulgaria's most treasured places. Still maintained today by Orthodox monks, the Rila Monastery is open to travelers who want to escape and find a place where the spiritual world brings peace and solitude. Beautiful, spiritual and amazing are just a few adjectives that describe the Rila Monastery...deep in the mountains of Bulgaria.

A compact city, with remnants of communism still very visible. Still not visited by huge numbers of Brits (so go before everyone else does), but well and truly discovered by Russian tourists. Give Sofia a go, you'll surprise yourself.

Overall Resort Rating:
Sofia is a mixture of stunning buildings and communist concrete blocks. Avoid driving in the ciy unless you are feeling suicidal. Instead get public transport which is cheap and frequent. It's worth hiring a car to look at the mountains though.
