My wife and I took a Holiday on Vancouver Island to celebrate our Ruby wedding Anniversary, we chose the destination because my brother lives there and we had never been across the Atlantic before and wanted to see where he has lived for almost 30 years, we booked through a small local Travel Agent who did everything for us after we chose the dates and Hotel from his brochure, we flew to Vancouver Airport and stayed for 3 nights in the Hotel Rosedale on Robson in the heart of the city, my brother and his wife came over from Vancouver Island on the car ferry to meet us the next day and stayed for 2 nights in another Hotel, then took us over to the `Island` on the car ferry when we checked out of our Hotel, they even drove us to our Hotel on Vancouver Island,
The Laurel Point Inn, this a fantastic Hotel and we would recommend it to everyone, it's location was perfect, right on the banks of the Inner Harbour on a small headland of lawns and trees with rooms looking out over either the Inner or Outer Harbour, the Hotel staff were very pleasant yet couteous at all times, very helpful and could not do enough for us for the whole of the 24 nights we were there, Victoria itself is a very beautiful city and thanks to my brother and his wife we saw every inch of it, the focal point of the city of course is the Harbour which is surrounded by beautiful buildings such as Hotels, shops, and places like The Parliament Building, the famous Empress Hotel, and The Royal B.C. Museum, the Island, which we spent almost every day exploring by car is one of the most beautiful places imaginable, the highlights of which I would say were, Goldstream Provincial Park, Cowichan Valley Native Centre with it's Totem poles, Native Indian Dancing and an explanation of Native Indian Folklore, the B.C. Forest Discovery Centre which is a museum dedicated to the logging trade,
we also went on the car ferry to Saltspring Island and spent the day among the wild deer and other wildlife on the island, Souke on the east coast of the Island is a very quiet but lovely spot with it's natural harbour, and a little further on, French Beach, a lovely unspoilt pebble beach littered with logs washed up on tide, one of our favourite places on the Island is Butchart Gardens with it's incredible array of plants trees shrubs lawns and fountains, this place is an absolute must for all visitors, the Gardens even have a firework display on some evenings, warning, don't forget your camera, another lovely day's drive is through Esquimalt and along the Gorge to Lagoon Road that separates the Pacific Ocean from the fresh or brackish water of a natural lagoon, a wonderful place for wildlife especially Canada Goose, and when the tide rises it overflows into the lagoon turning the fresh water salty, and when the tide recedes the water from the mountains fills the lagoon again with fresh water, over the far side of the lagoon is Royal Roads University AKA Hatley Castle with it's beautiful gardens and peacocks, another nice easy drive from Victoria is up the Saanich Peninsula to Sidney-by-the-sea a rather tongue in cheek name for a lovely little town with a gorgeous marina and harbourside restaurants, not far from Sidney is Victorias airport, and up the mountain beyond is a fantastic view from Dunsmuir Lodge, and then on to the B.C. Observatory on top of another nearby mountain with equally magical views,
all in all a wonderful Holiday and very highly recommended.
