Don't go there is nothing on the island but hotels, no people live there and it takes 2 hours to get cuba by bus through trips (that are really expensive) and you have to fly to Havana cost £180.00 each for basic trip just for the day. Only cows live on the island you are trapped.

Cayo Coco review

"Worst experience ever"

Horrible, horrible, horrible. My partner and I went in June 2008, he's been before but it was my first time and it was supposed to be a dream holiday. It turned out to be very far from it.

We were extremely isolated and when we tried to venture out somewhere else, the hotel staff lied to us about what was available-there was nothing as it was all closed as we later found out and it cost me 80 cuc(around 70 euros)

We were woken up at 5am every morning by the mosquito spraying and when we questioned it the staff were rude and didn't care. The food wasn't very hygienically kept-containers open to birds, insects and cats, never fresh, same with the pool bar. I contracted food poisoning after a few days. The pool wasnt cleaned once in the 2 weeks we were there and as a result this made both my partner and I ill. We had to later seek medical treatment whilst we were in Havana on a trip.

We booked 3 trips with the reps and were ripped off, they cost a lot of money and weren't even worth half of what we paid for them.

On the whole the best part of the holiday was when we went home, so many problems and both thomas cook and the hotel staff couldn't of cared less. We are still battling with thomas cook now-9 months later for compensation. I wouldn't ever recommend this hotel or thomas cook themselves. I can't paste the complaint letter we put into thomas cook as it was 9 pages long and there's not enough room on here.

As I said at the beginning this was supposed to be a dream holiday and it turned out to be one from the depths of despair.

Its not realy a resort. Scenery is gorgeous, but realy is just a hotel in the middle of nowhere. All the staff live over an hour away, and refer to cuba as the mainland. The cayos are joined to cuba via a realy long road. If you are happy staying in the hotel, sunbathing, swimming etc then its good, if you get cabin fever and like to get out then you could be bored.

suitable for beach lovers only , I was told it woud have been dangerous to go exploring on my own outside the exclosed resort itself. not what I expected as I wanted to go looking around on my own time. I felt pretty trapped after a week.

i havent made it due to hotel closure and change of flights. I can't tell you what I don't know. I simply want to warn travellers to get in touch with their tour operator to avoid disappointment like me.

The beach is ok, but the water is very very rocky and filled with urchins, so you have to be incredibly wary with young kids as letting them go into the water alone would be a mistake. The hotels each have a set "beachfront area" and some hotels fare better than others, but generally the playa dorada coast is not what you dream up when conjuring a tropical setting.

Playa Dorada has a shopping plaza in it called the oggi plaza unfortunately it is almost closed , shops are shut, one bar open no restaurants ,just a few souvenir shops ,few tour hacks, that's it ,I don't mean its closed as in waiting for the season to start I mean the units are closed empty and up for sale ,so when you go for a walk through the plaza you are virtually dragged into the open shops very off putting indeed, in fact my partner had lewd comments made to her whilst walking with me during the day, so we did not venture out at night, it is a ghost town with touts and young dominican men hanging around .

Didn't venture too far, But was extremely dissapointed with the beach. Sea is full of sea grass and didn't see too much sea life. Sand is lovely and soft but looks messy where the grass has washed up

Nothing at Bavaro and too far to walk to. Sea cool and rough not suitable for children. Remote location. All inclusive so can't comment on costs outside resort as nowhere to get to easily.

Bavaro review

"Sand Fleas"

81%
of reviewers would recommend this

Open quote

The beach is like a grey sand colour not very inviting, we walked on the beach for five minutes and were bitten to bits by sand fleas, apparently they used to spray beach but obviously not any more. The resort it self is very out of the way which is not a problem if the hotel does what it says, there was only one bar open, the food as said was disgusting with flies over it. The pool area grubby, loads of ants, yes have been to many islands with ants but if the place is clean it keeps majority of them at bay.
