BIGish, clean and a friendly service. Having read some reviews before we went we were a little dubious about our choice of hotel but it was considerably better than some of the reviews implied. We were upgraded straight away to a villa in the lagoon which was very nice, but you need to put the shower on for a while before you need it if you want it hot! We had a couple of problems with the electronic key card not working sometimes so we were locked out but that was rectified straight away. It was pretty quiet when we were there though except for the last couple of days when it seemed like the whole of Canada arrived! Our main gripe was the buffet restaurant on the Laguna side, the food is not the best, but it's edible although repetative, the service is a bit slow but the staff are friendly, they're sometimes slow to restock the servery and they need to learn how to keep it hotter for longer. There can be a lot of queuing if you want your food cooked in front of you (but it's worth it) unless you hit it at the right time, i'd hate to be there when it's full! If you want to avoid getting really bored with the food avoid using the buffet at lunch and dinner on the same day, the snack bars make great pizzas and toasted sandwiches as an alternative. We tended to go to the Emperador buffet in the evening instead as we received a better service and the food was a lot hotter. The A La Carte restaurants were nice though and made a change from the buffet so spread them out over your stay. All the bars were very good, a friendly and efficient service in all of them.

We spent two weeks at this hotel- it was well below standard-most of the facilities were closed, the rooms were filthy, the staff rude, the laguna stinking and the food was not fit for human consumption. It sounds like paradise but its not-all inclusive means you may get it if its there and they feel like giving it to you. We all got food poisoning, I got an ear infection too and we had items stolen from our room. We are awaiting compensation from THOMAS COOK.
There is nothing to do outside the resort. Brisas is next door and there is aways something going on in there. This is a totally relaxing holiday. As with any other package deal, there are many organised trips to go on.

My husband and I went here in Feb last year, we had a great time, everybody apart from French Canadians were really friendly and good fun. It is an average resort, as everybody says you only get what you pay for and this place was a BARGAIN. I know it was badly damaged in the hurricane, due to effort and hard work the place is up and running again maybe not everybodys cup of tea. I think it is worth a try I am sure the bad things are minimal, and you will enjoy the happy friendly athmosphere.

Not much to see at downtown varedero really locals are friendly. A bus goes the whole length of the peninsular for only 5 cuc per day. Really does get like a sardine tin at times. Markets are ceaper than the Las Americas shopping centre so advise to go to these downtown to buy your cigars and holiday souveneirs. We bought a plate here at 25 cucs and it was in the market for 8! Plenty of bars and restaurants that ups the pace after dark! Never felt safer but do be vigilent as the cubans are very poor and try every scam to get our tourist cucs.Al Capones house a bit of nothing really but is great just to see all the old cars downtown and horse and traps. Worth a visit but dont plan too long a day. The beach is nice too.

Firstly like to say that this hotel is advertised as a 4 star hotel but it is more like a 3 but saying that we found it to be very comfotable and have made following notes for any future guests: ROOMS very comfotable and spotless the maid comes every day and does the thing with the towels on the bed with flowers towels provided ok but bit hard . There is the main block which is only 3 storeys high and on top floor get a view of the pool and sea but we stayed in a beach block . 4 in a block and very comfortable with a terrace or balcony looking over the gardens and some over pool. Lovely for us nice and quiet as all the other guests were couples so good but asthey are made with concrete can be noisy hear everything upstairs but no problem as our neighbours were really quiet. POOL quite small for the size of the hotel but plenty of beds and there is a pool bar that is great the waiter FIDEL is fab and comes around to take orders to be delivered to you! Towels are available every day via a card from reception on arrival ok but take your own if fussy. FOOD was better than we thought so many different nationalities so hard to please everyone. The main Isabelica is fab always something Englsh and lots of choice . Desserts a bit boring and never saw a tomato in the salad and so disappointed not much fresh fruit being a tropical island but we ate well and at lunch times can eat on the beach they do a barbie sometimes or pool bar does good choice.Cuban is ok had bad choice of red snapper but tried again and had a lovely steak but BEWARE mozzies are vicious and you will get bitten alive at sundown, cover up and spray lots of repelent they make your lives miserable! Japanese is just fab cooking at the table food delicious and fresh lovely we went 4 times. BARS The main lobby bar is the best try the cocktails . Ask for cava too .Never seems to be any rule to who gets served next usually the pretties girl but we werent in any hurry! Bar next to cuban restaurant on way to beach really good Fiedel is fab and always remembers your drink! Cover up at sundown or get bitten alive! ENTERTAINMENT such a good talented team that entertain you all day at the pool and beach then work all night too. Dancing is fab. BEACH is the best just breathtaking and the best beach on peninsular so be ready for paradise. Pedaloes, hobby cats or kayaks all good. LAST WORD this is not the best holiday weve had but without a doubt the staff are infectiously happy and the beach is fab!

Rooms in need of repainting, furniture in lobby very poor(o.k for the dog to sleep on).Very dark in grounds and hotel area, low watt bulbs used. Beach not a lot of sand, not like the pictures you see! Pool area around beds dirty and muddy, never cleaned in the two weeks we were there. Low on supplies in bar and restaurant after first week. Trips very expensive! Didn't go anywhere. Tipping requried all the time (no better service) don't bother! ATTACKED by mosquitoes, over 200 bites on husband. Had to escape to our rooms after 16.00 hours. Met some lovely people, over all a good holiday. Will go back to Cuba but not this hotel.
bring with you a big flask like the canadians and watch out at the black cattle because they charge at you they come out at night.

We are privelaged(sp) to be able to visit countries like this and should be looking at how the locals have to live before complaining.

We went on a 7 day through Cuba, before arriving at the resort. Having danced the night away in a cave in Vinales, sampled bars and restaurants in Havanna, and seen stunning buildings in Havanna and Trinidad; Varadero can't compete with all that. However, the beaches are stunning and it is a great option for a few days. Couldnt stay there for 10 days though, as you would get bored of all the drinks and the similiar food every day.

Overall we had a nice time in the resort. Only stayed 4 nights. The positives: staff always friendly and smiling, although reception staff not very helpful. Negatives: on arrival it poored down with rain, noone offered to show us the bungalow or help with luggage, so got soaked trying to find our room. 5 star hotel, but probably 3 stars for UK standard. Minibar was not stocked, and hairdryer did not work.
