Superb resort, stunning views and beaches, the closest to paradise ive been! The only critsism i would have is that the humidity on the island can be a bit overpowering and temperatures at times were a bit too hot for us!

Only left the complex once and that was to go and swim with the dolphins. This was an excellent day out!!! Did not book through the rep, went with another guide all legit and secure! Went horse riding, visited a farm, ostrich farm, swam with dolphins, boat ride (on our own), lunch at a restaurant (on our own), coach back to complex. Great day out!!!!

Although we went out and about we were in an All Inclusive Adults only. All i can say is the Cuban people are some of the friendliest people you could want to meet.

"Stepping Back In Time"

Overall Resort Rating:

Excellent

Open quote

As we were staying in an All Inclusive hotel we did not eat out but the people are really helpful and you do not feel threatened when you go out as it is very safe to do so. It is like stepping back in time as there are no tractors or other farming equipment and all the farmers use Oxen to pull their ploughs, and horses and carriages to get around. There are some buses for the people but they are old and falling to pieces, there is no air-con and it gets really humid in the summer months. Thomas Cook arranged all the trips well and the rep Urly was brilliant. If you get chance take some toiletries & spare clothes (T-Shirst) etc to leave them as they are all on rations from the government and are very poor. I belive the children need school books & pencils etc so if you can take some over they will appreciate it.

"Best Beaches in the world... maybe!"

Overall Resort Rating:

So, the resort... well there isnt a great deal to see and do outside the hotel in the immidiate area, but what you really come here for would be the beaches, and they are utterly stunning. That said, the Flamengo reserve is cool, and the trips that you can go on (although outside the immediate area) are interesting and good value.

This is a very rural area in Cuba and if you like clubbing it may not be the place for you. There is entertainment in the hotel each night but this is far removed from the busy strips that are found in Spain or Cyprus.

The area has a small local market that sells mainly handmade crafts some of which are excellent quality and very well made. These are not always available and it is hit and miss depending on which day you visit.

There is a nature reserver a short distance away which ofers fishing, Horse Riding and hiking. Scooter and Car hire are available. Personally I would not recommend driving a car and would suggest that you do not ride a scooter. Although the vehicles are in sound condition the roads are not and the sight of tourists on scooters without protective gear makes me cringe. All the Hotels offer excursions both local and to Havana. They range from £50.00 to £250.00 (Havana overnight with flights) and most of them are an excellent way to get out and see more of this fabulous country.

"Melia Las Antillas"

Overall Resort Rating:

Excellent

Open quote

Like a mini-village, Melia Las Antillas is spread across six hectares of tropical gardens. Palm trees feature heavily, as do water features – not least the hotel’s main pool. But the water feature that gets everyone talking is the rather large one just beyond the hotel grounds - the sea. Location-wise, this place can do no wrong. It’s got a plum position on Varadero’s beach, so you can be digging your toes in the sand within minutes. But the setting's only part of the story. The food’s a big deal here, too – no mean feat for a country that’s yet to make a name for itself in the culinary stakes. Four restaurants vie for your attention, from casual snack bars to à la carte eateries that up the ante when it comes to dress code. Seafood’s a bit of a speciality here, likewise Italian. And on top of that, the hotel’s got five bars with just about every prefix going – pool, beach, piano, lobby – so you’re never far from another mojito. As to the rooms, they’re spacious and nicely decorated. Think fresh cream walls and cool tile floors with a generous splash of colour coming from the framed Cuban art. The lobby’s something of a talking point, too. It looks like a tiered wedding cake draped in ivy, with a glass roof and chequerboard floor completing the impressive picture. But the real icing on this cake is the service. You get the impression nothing’s too much trouble for the staff here, which means all you have to worry about is enjoying yourself. And with golf, tennis and watersports all on the menu, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

From what little we saw of the resort it was very friendly and accommodating. People are very genuine and it feels very safe to be walking around - this is not the same in other Caribean resorts
