I have literally just returned from a 7 night stay at the Club Amigo Atlantico and between my letter of complaint to Thomas Cook I thought that I should warn others off going. Cuba is an amazing place and the beaches are fantastic, white sand and turquoise sea... lovely, but we were unfortunate with where we stayed. The food is the main issue, it is absolutely appalling, no fresh food at all, only overcooked meat with sweet corn or rice and that's it. I didn't see any fresh fish or have one meal I enjoyed. The puddings consisted of watermelon which was obviously the same batch brought out all week as it was getting drier and drier. My boyfriend and I both got stomach upsets too. Our last night in Cuba I was expecting something wonderful from the speciality Cuban A'la Carte restaurant as we are both quite adventurous with food, but the kebab 'chef's speciality' which I was served looked ok but was REALLY tough, I couldn't even cut the meat with a knife, we walked out half way through. I am very easily pleased, but this place is rubbish.

The water sports was another big thing I was looking forward to, but they consisted of 2 kayaks, 1 pedalo and 4 snorkels for all the hundreds of guests who were staying.

Our room was ok, but on the first night we found 8 cockroaches running around - it was the worst night I've ever had... thankfully we moved rooms, but I wouldn't use the guest toilet in reception as I'd found cockroaches in there too, and we found them flying and running around the bar areas.

Basically all in all, I recommend anyone looking at this hotel should go and look elsewhere, there were people on the plane who I met who stayed in a hotel down the road, a 4* and paid a very similar amount and their food and service sounded AMAZING, I'm very jealous. Don't stay at the Club Amigo Atlantico, pay a tiny bit more and stay elsewhere; the Club Amigo Atlantico will be a waste of your hard earned money!

My husband and I went here in Feb last year, we had a great time, everybody apart from French Canadians were really friendly and good fun. It is an average resort, as everybody says you only get what you pay for and this place was a BARGAIN. I know it was badly damaged in the hurricane, due to effort and hard work the place is up and running again maybe not everybodys cup of tea. I think it is worth a try I am sure the bad things are minimal, and you will enjoy the happy friendly athmosphere.

hi just got back from cuba. 7 days in club amigo, then 3 days in havana. i think some of the reviews are quite harsh, at the end of the day, you get what you pay for.

The beaches here are second to none, absolutely stunning, a mixture of fine sands, trees and palm trees, plus not over crowded. Also an added bonus is that the locals come here too to chill out.

The Atlantic hotel was basic, we had no balcony or sea view, like most of the rooms here!, which of course is disappointing. Many people looked peeved, and the ground floor rooms seem to have an ant problem! But i have to say our room was very clean, and the maid was very good, and cleaned our room everyday. All of the grounds needed a lick of paint, but the plants and trees seem to hide a great deal. there are 3 pools, one very noisy, but the beach is the best bet.

The food was good, i think alot of people did not realise that you could go to any of the restaurants in the amigo grounds. The hotel restaurant did a good breakfast, but that was it! Just make sure you visit the other r'rants, for example i had bbq snapper fish, and it was lovely. The only fault about the food, was that it repeated itself most days.

There is nothing outside the hotel grounds to do, no bars, restaurants etc, and only about 4 shops. You are not allowed to get a bus or taxi to anyother place, so you can only go to santiago for example if you book an excursion with your rep! strange i know, but true, so be aware!

My advice is to either spend a little extra, and go to Hotel Brisas next door, or better still go to resort close to Havana ie Varadero. Havana won't let you down, it is an amazing city!!

Just returned this week (13 Dec).
Hotel is definitely not 3 star and needs a face lift- although I believe the money is in place for this.
Worst problem was mosquitos. Almost everyone had bites despite repellant, and my wifes face was badly swollen. Could be due to the weather but wouldn't like to say for sure. Do not go without strong creams. Sun, when it appeared, is very strong and with only 3 days full sun have both got decent tans.
Beach is very nice with soft sand but smell of sewage close to hotel- this disappears only a short distance away. 4 pools are good size and plenty of free sunbeds with bars to eat and drink alongside them. Also beach has free watersports but staff expect a tip.

Hotel food was boring and lukewarm. No cereals for breakfast and lukewarm water for tea. Cuban coffee seems to be the order of the day. Eggs everyday for 2 weeks gets monotonous! No windows in main restaurant so consequently the wind and rain blew in. Had good meals in 2 fish restaurants off site, both served lobster and prawns, although sat with umbrella up inside one restaurant due to rain through roof.
Only did 1 trip out( to local village) which was good and cheap.
Rooms are dark but adequate with bathroom and wardrobe. Staff killed and removed a mouse one day .

THE ROOM
I would definitely not recommend this hotel. It is tired and in serious need of an overhaul. It rained for most of our stay over Xmas 2006 and our ceiling had a huge crack and leaked. Quite a few other people's leaked and they obviously hadn't been repaired for years, if ever! I doubt if they will ever be repaired until the roof actually caves in on you. My front wall was disintergrating and there was a green patchy paint over the original brown on our balcony There was one chair, the other one was broken and would probably never be replaced.

MOSQUITOS
Our major problem was with mosquitos. There's a stagnant pond across from the bungalows section which was a haven for mosquito breeding. We had over 100 bites each despite bringing every repellent known to man plus a plug in! BRING YOUR OWN BITE CREAM as the £8 steroid cream the pharmacy sold me did little to alleviate the miserable itching. The rooms were never sprayed or fumigated. The local houses all had mosquito nets.

THE FOOD
The food is just plain awful. The a la carte isn't much better either. There was a bucketful of salt added to everything too. In my opiniion, you can't say ";Oh it's Cuba"; and condone these unacceptably low standards. Every other hotel had decent food, why can't this one? It doesn't need fistfuls of money to improve, just decent catering, managed properly. You can get a voucher to eat in the Brisas next door but you must book well in advance. All drinks are served in flimsy little plastic cups.

LOCATION and THINGS TO DO
The location is lovely, like all the other hotels, right on the beach, just walk down about 20 steps. Don't go with a wheelchair. The 2 pools are clean and there is an abundance of sun beds. There is a diving centre at the end of the beach, they are lovely and take good care of you. They don't take any risks and I would definitely recommend them. You can have a pedalo, windsurf, kayak or snorkel, the snorkelling is great if you swim quite far out to the coral reefs. No motorised sports. You can have a bike to ride along the coast, which is good. You can rent a moped for 24CUCs. Don't even think about hiring a car. The road to Santiago de Cuba is virtually non-existent and so unbelievably dangerous.
A little ";Thomas the Tank Engine"; stops outside the hotel every day at 10.30am and takes you up the mountain and down to a little fishing village for 10CUCs. Well worth the ride. There's also a bus that stops outside that takes you to an historic site but was closed over Xmas, so we didn't see it but I heard it's well worth the journey.

ENTERTAINMENT
There is a classical pianist playing 8-9pm in the main building and the house band play to you as you're eating for an hour, then they play at the bungalow section for a further hour before the dreaded games, or even ballet! It finishes 11.30pm There is a disco, which my teenagers disliked. They found the 24hour snack bar better to meet up and talk and laugh. There is a salsa class in a room at the bungalow section which I never caught. Information seems to be on a need to know basis.
I took the Santiago de Cuba bus trip. It was the worst trip I've ever paid good money for. Avoid a tour guide called Chris! After taking 5 hours to reach our destination to a little restaurant, we had a frugal lunch before guided around the fortress next to it, we actually spent 2 hours in total looking around Santiago by ourselves. I'm sure it can be a lovely trip but you need a good guuide to show you around. We spent the most part just sort of wandering around. The trip home was a miraculous 3 hours - 2 hours less!

In conclusion: After a gruelling 10 hour flight and a lot of money, you need a perfect holiday. Choose a different hotel. Don't take your kids, there's nothing for them here.

We have just returned from our 2wk holiday in Cuba and it was lovely and relaxing! if you wnat a holiday that is full on then the hotel atlantico is not really the place for you. the entertainment in the hotel is poor in the evening with the best thing being the cuban bands that played every night before the main event but to be honest we left the small area for the entertainment after the band finished every night and was in bed by 11.00pm most nights! the bar staff in all the bars where friendly and could not do enough for you, remebering what you have to drink most of the time (without having to give them a tip!.

The food in the buffet is not always the best but there is always something for you to eat. Dont forget to book into the ala carte restaurants, plan when you want to go and book them all at the same time, for us El Bennies was the worst (cuban restaurant) the best was the international restaurant, nice surprise when the doors open|! The staff in the Italian were great and always ready to fill your glass with wine!

The beach was beautiful, white sand and crystal clear water but you need to get down there eariy as not many sunbeds, but plenty in the afternoon after lunch. Make sure you have a good look around the complex as lots of pools that you will not see apart from the swim up bar pool which is the busiest out of the four, there was one of the pools that had only 2 people sunbathing around it with a bar all to themselves!

Summing up this is a very clean very friendly 3star hotel with little frills but good value for money if you are looking for a quiet relaxing holiday.

My boy friend and myself have just came back from club amigo . We had a fantastic time .

The food was not much but you could always find something to eat you did not go hungry. The 24 hour bar done nice pizzas and toasted sanwiches .The drinks at the bar are served in vending machine cups but if you ask they will give you a bigger cup you can also ask for cans and bottles . If you do go to club amigo make sure you book the havanna 2 day trip well worth the money. You will fly for 1hour 45 mins from holguin to havanna your meals and most of your drinks are all included. You will be shown all around havanna you will see all the old american classic cars ,the rum factory. You will also see the hotel room that earnest hemingway stayed at and the bar he always used . You will be taken to the tropicano to see a fantastic show .

I recomend any one to go on the trip to havanna you will not be disappointed .You are not seeeing the real cuba until you have been to havanna. In club amigo we stayed in the villas which were spotless we had no complaint what so ever about our room we also got a sea view . If you want more than a 3 star holiday don`t go to club amigo . If you want a good cheap holiday and don`t care what the star rating is then do visit club amigo. We booked a meal in the 4 star hotel next door (brisas) and found it to serve the same food as club amigo.

So it does not matter were you stay it`s what you make of your holiday and i can assure anyone i made the very most of my holiday and enjoyed it tromendously.

I was unsure about going to club amigo after reading the reviews but i`m pleased to say it was the best holiday i have ever had.

We stayed in the villas which were spotless. The maid was in every day so there was`nt time to make a mess. The food was not much but you have to remember it is a 3 star not the Ritz...You wont go hungry you will find something you like the 24 hour bar does lovely pizza n chips and toasted sandwiches, the pool bar does nice food also. There is lots of activities going on snorkling, pedlos, horse riding, cycling. There is always access to all activities no queueing...

The cuban people are so friendly ,the staff at the hotel are also friendly.Make sure you attend the wecoming meeting with the rep, as there are so many trips too do.The high light for us was the trip to havanna (it really is a must) you are not seeing the real cuba until you visit havanna it will cost you £200 each that includes your flights ,transport to your 5 star hotel!! all meals and drinks and a top show at the tropicano,Then the next day you will be taken around havanna by coach site seeing. Then you will be given free time to do what you want ( havanna is quite safe to walk around on your own )There is so much to learn and see in havanna.Back at club amigo there is a swim up bar which is quite busy there are plenty of sun beds around the pool,so no need to get up early to save beds!!!At most of the bars drinks are served in plastic cups like the ones you get in a vending machine but if you ask they will give you glasses (if you are not around the pool)

all in all it was a fantastic holiday and the weather was very hot.I would recommend this hotel to anyone but you must remember this is a 3 star you get what you pay for and it is worth every penny....

Review based on first visit to cuba, we travel on the 17/07/06 to this hotel for 14 nights .
We had no problems here and a great holiday, we stayed in the villa rooms, which were the best rooms on resort, little out dated but clean and tidy, maid service was excellent,we had bottom floor room but had very little trouble with ants and cockroaches. food was not a problem at all plenty of it and very eatable, with loads of choice for all diet needs.

the pools were kept very clean, and the staff very helpful.
good points: food, hotel clean and tidy, staff nice, lovely beaches,
bad points: trips very expensive (ie 61.50 pounds each english for 20 mintues with dolpins)
very low key (so if you like night life do go here)

all in all would return to this hotel as you have a choice of high key pools and relaxing quite pools.
must say do not go if you intend to find things like in europe/england. after all this is cuba, go with an open mind and you wont be dissapointed.

first you notice all the wild cats loads of them in your hotel, secondly the food is cold in all buffet restaurants, thirdly the place needs a good clean, and to top it all of soft plastic glasses in all bars and restauraunts, and if your lucky you might get the drink of your choice if they have it.3* I wouldn't give it 2*

We moved out after 2 nights absolutely atrocious hotel. went to the Blau costa verde ten out of ten in all they do. and its only 20km up the beach

Well where do I start
the complex was very nice, but the whole place wants updating,in the main lobby you just sink to the bottom of the seating, can`t fault the staff they always had a smile on there faces and made you very welcome

FOOD...it was more or less cold no cornflakes in the morning the only thing you got hot was the eggs,.. the bacon was cold but we learned that you could put it on the hot plate where the eggs were cooked, the best place to eat was at Brisas hotel you can get vouchers to go once a week there, but iff you complained enough you can get them every night to go there as many people did.
We found the best place to eat at the hotel was the 24hour bar you could get chips and pizza freshly made.

THE ACCOMMODATION...
when it rained our room number 5101 got flooded out, ours was at the villas so dont stay in that one also iff you wanted a fridge you had to ask for one,the rep never told anyone,we only found out 2 days before we left.
our sheets were only changed 3 times in three weeks.and the towels were very small, and not changed on a regular basis

ONE TIP put a towel at the bottom of your door at night to stop the mossies and cockroahes getting in and leave your airconditioning on all the time even when you are out as the bugs dont like the cold.
There is no shade around the vllas pool.
iff you walked in the grass as many did you would end up with cat flea bites the number of cats were at least 60, one child got a ring worm from them, rats were seen in the 24 hour bar running along the rafters in the roof and also in the grounds, cockroaches were in there plenty

Cuba is a lovely place don`t be afraid to go out at night the cubans are very poor so take a lot of small gifts with you..pens,shampoos shower gels nail varnish.(ect)
try and go on the trips they are well worth the money
No problem at the airport
We wont be going back to this hotel
We would rate it as a 2*

Review based on third visit to cuba and numerous visits to all inclusive World wide hotels , will defiantly go back to cuba but not atlatico

2x adults 45
1 child 14

location 9/10
accommodation 3/10
food 4/10
entertainment 5/10

After reading over fifty reviews on the atlantico hotel I must say I was very disappointed with the visit in January 2, 2006 , this review is on the bungalow Accommodation only ,
arriving at 9 pm we where given number 20 behind The stage area , we were greeted by numerous ants on the floor ,decided to retire early after 12 hour journey.

at 10 o'clock the entertainment started very loudly this wasn't to much of a problem normally staying up quit late, 3 am awakened by security guard radios bleeping and talking very loudly 5am numerous bus coaches servicing hotel passing some beep horns Some shouting to friends. Total lack of consideration to guests.

We complained and where move to 114 which was far quieter, the down side of 114 was very strong smell of damp small mold patches on walls and ceiling constant running toilet which leaked On cistern reported problem and was sorted to a degree part of solution was to put a bucket under leak, a few ants and 1 cockroach but not to bad. conclusion on accommodation very tired in need of major refurbishment.
As for the food in most reviews I read most failed to commit on food saying it's ok, not to bad, it,s cuba , I will go on record To say it varied quite a bit From dreadful to ok but never good, plus its got to be totally Unacceptable to Frequently run out of French fries , pizzas in snack bars.

Entertainment day time activities were numerous it's a shame guests were not encouraged to join in, one reason is it was virtually impossible to identify the animation team having no visible Uniform or name tags, nightly entertainment was not Good but acceptable.

Conclusion this hotel is in a fantastic location but needs to be rated as 2* possibly 2.5*

We went to Cuba on the advice of several friends who had been who were full of praise for the country. Although, we could see how aesthetically pleasing Cuba was, the holiday didn't live up to our expectations.

On arrival at the airport my partner was subjected to a twenty minute search and grilling by airport security which affected our initial impression of Cuba. However, when we arrived at the hotel the mood lightened; we were very impressed. The complex is clean, well maintained and our superior room was better than any we have stayed in on previous holidays. The food in the hotel was average. I'm quite fussy and found it difficult to find anything, although my partner was fine.

The main problem with the holiday was how isolated the hotel was from the outside world. The nearest town was Holguin, where we flew into (approx. 50km),so there was nowhere to walk to. We were lead to believe that there were beach bars and restaurants. This wasn't true and basically you had to eat onsite , watch the stereotypical entertainment every night and do very little else. Unfortunately that wasn't for us.

Overall, the weather was amazing and it was a nice rest but there is only so much sunbathing and cheap free rum (all inclusive) that you could take.
