"Lovely Hotel - Not enough Sunbeds/Shade"
Overall Hotel Rating:
Beautiful hotel, lovely gardens, excellent food with unlimited a la cartes. Entertaintment in hotel very low key and the bar closes at 11.30pm which is very early for an adults only hotel. There is further entertainment and bars in the adjoining hotels (Punta Cana/Bavaro) which is not far, but not adults only. The things that let this hotel down are: 1. People reserving sunbeds from 5.30am, we witnessed this on our first morning, and every morning after that, unless you were prepared to put a towel etc on a sunbed (with an umbrella) either around the pool or on the beach before 7.30 am you would not get one. Around the pool and beach we saw most sunbeds empty till sometimes after lunch which was very frustrating. We had to go on the beach and try to find shade under a palm tree (not many) and move around with the sun. This lets it down big time!! 2. The hotel service in the buffet restuarants and al a cartes was terrible. The waiters would be too busy re setting tables for the next day than fetching us a drink. We sometimes had to ask 3 times a session for one drink. Other waiters just seemed not interested, they were not smiling, they looked miserable. 3. Could not get clean towels at the end of the day unless you changed them around 3pm at the pool, what was the point of changing them at that time as you were still using them until around 5pm. Reported this and it changed for around 3 days then went back to normal.
We have been to the sister hotel (Punta Cana) last year and found the service in the restaurants brilliant. We ate in the buffet restaurant this time in Punta Cana and the staff were very attentive and happy. There were more parasols around the pool and on the beach in this hotel therefore more shade. The weather was late 30s and we needed the shade.
If the Ambar sort out the problems with reserving sunbeds and train their staff to be more attentive and find out why they dont seem to care, keep the bar open whilst 1am (adults do like to socialise after 11.30pm) it would be a brilliant hotel.

"Gran Bahia Principe Ambar Adults only"
Overall Hotel Rating:
A Fabulous 5 star, all inclusive hotel, literally on the beach. Great food, service, rooms, location, security. Could not recommend the hotel enough for a relaxing pool and beach holiday. El Olvivo restaurant in the hotel served fabulous steak!
Take the outback safari tour and ask for Sammy as your tour guide - best excursion ever taken - incredibly funny and knowledgable tour guide. You have a great day and feel you got to learn a lot about the island at the same time.
