"GREAT PLACE ON A BUDGET"

Overall Hotel Rating:

Open quote

This hotel was spotlessly clean with fabulous, helpful staff always smiling. The only downside of the staff was at the Watersports where one or two but not all the guys were just leeches, staring at the women and making us at times feel a bit uncomfortable. The food was amazing, anyone who complains about the food simply will never be happy. The choice is great from hot and cold food in the main dining area to a choice of snacks on or by the beach. The Ala Carte restaurants were beautiful too and for a small fee, well worth it in beautiful surroundings and they really do try to go out of their way to accomodate your every need. The Rum is very strong, too strong for us however, there is a great choice of other drinks and cocktails on the all inclusive package. One or two did complain about the hotel but to be truthful, they would complain wherever they were. It is not safe to go out on the beach of an evening and I did hear of 2 attacks on the beach, I do not know if this was true but being honest again, its a silly thing to do, go walking on a dark beach at night in a strange place. I would go back to this hotel tomorrow no problem, all the staff were great, entertainers never stopped and I wish you all a grwat holiday!

We just stayed here week commencing 26th april 2009,For the money that we paid we knew what to expect.Hotel is close to the airport which was what we wanted after a long flight.Upon arrival at the hotel checkin was quick, you got a cold cocktail while you waited to be seen too. the rooms were very spacious and clean, some of the rooms over look the kitchens, and a bulidin site which was an eye saw. The food was lovely in the buffet restuarnt, with a wide variet of choice,We didnt go to the Al'carte's as you had to pay for them which we were not told until we actually got to the hotel, which was a bit disapointing. The beach was gorgeous, the lifeguards are great. You must go to Leons lobster for the $25 its worth a good lobster. The only downside to this hotel is the main bar only has 6 table and 8 seats round the bar so if you dont get down early enough you have to stand the whole night. The entertainment is the worst that I have seen in an All Inclusive.

just got back its ok if you want sun and to relax. food is quite basic and not much variety. if its wet or over cast then there is nothing to do,except sit in your room and watch telly. there is no early evening entertainment so was quite a poor week.trips are very dear and taxis and car hire are also expensive. the beach is full of sea-weed which gets cleaned most mornings but sea is still full of it.The swimming pools are excellent.overall would give it 6/10

The hotel is quite old and in need of a face lift, that said every where was clean and tidy. The rooms are basic but adequate, after all this is only a 3* hotel. The food was good with plenty of choice, we never had a problem getting a table in the restaurant and the staff were always extremely helpful. The pools were good, and the beach was clean, the locals could be annoying but if you are firm with them they tend not to bother you. If you have a problem there was always a security guard available. The one thing I was disappointed about was the cost of the trips. I was lucky enough to be with someone who had been there before; he knew one of the taxi drivers who do work for the hotel (Carl Clarkson). We booked 3 trips away with Carl and saved a fortune, he also knew the best/safest places to go. His number is 18768628053 and I would recommend him to any one, pass on my regards to him if you use him (Mick).

We booked 2 weeks at the Starfish over Christmas.....mistake.... BIG mistake! The place is poorly run, run down and grossly over rated and over priced! The room was OK but I reckon the maids only worked part time. We had to ask for the complimentary mini-bar to be stocked - it was stocked once during our time there (3 small bottles of water and 5 small bottles of sickly Jamaican pop between 4 people for a 2 week stay). There was no hot water, the power kept tripping out, the key-cards wouldn't work, and the kid's bunk bed was on the brink of collapsing each time one of them turned over in the night! The hotel shop was small and rip-off prices.I bought some decongestant tablets 2 for $2 - they had an expiry date on the packets of March 2008! The staff were ignorant, plus they never had any change so we ended up walking away with them owing US money each time! The food in the buffet was decidedly average and often cold. You could get a table but obtaining cuttlery, glasses, cups etc to enable you to indulge in a meal was like pulling teeth, waving $ bills to encourage the waiting staff to actually wait on the table worked, but only sometimes. They were poorly trained, painfully slow and sometimes downright rude. One night we asked 3 different people for a glass of wine-it eventually arrived as we were getting up to leave the table! The choice of food for children was also very poor-my son lived for much of the fortnight on chips and bread. He'd have eaten bananas had there been any! Considering we were in the tropics, the fruit selection on offer was very poor-melon, or perhaps melon, if you were really lucky, melon and pineapple-oh, and once we actually saw bananas but they disappeared so quickly that you'd have thought there was a shortage (there clearly was here!). There was nothing for the kids to do at night apart from the games arcade, they charge for everything-machines, pool tables, air hockey, etc. My children actually had money taken from them by a bunch of other kids. There should have been a member of staff in the arcade area but she kept disappearing. The pool nearest The pool nearest the beach was filthy. The water was almost yellow and you couldn't see the bottom. It was littered with plastic cups, straws, cigarette buts, scum, and heavens knows what else. The filtration system had broken down but they insisted on keeping it open. The main beach was littered with rubbish and broken glass. The kid's beach was evil . Never again

What can I say? First the flight was very long, didnt have to wait too long at immigration. Was quite upset at the poverty you see all around you. The hotel was in need of updating but decorating was being done in vacant rooms while we were there. Rooms were spotless and plenty of towels. Shampoo, shower gel and soap was all provided as was hair drier and iron/ironing board. The room was very spacious, with a fridge and optics. Had read that if you emptied the optics then you had to pay for replacements. Well we didnt even touch them as the lobby bar didnt shut til 2am. The pools were clean and had life guards sitting at the side. The beach was very clean (was cleaned at least three times a day). We loved the little island that you wade out to, there was a nice breeze there that you didnt get beside the pools. Even the locals that stood in the water between the beach and the island were good fun and friendly. They try once to sell you ganga and if you say no then they wont do it again but will still come and talk to you. The food was exceptional, we only ate at the buffet as the food was so good. Even the girls loved the food!!!!!!! The entertainment was good (better than I thought it would be) but was over at 10.30pm. Mona-Lisa is unbelievable. She must be the most multi-talented person ever. Staff at the hotel are wonderful!!!!!! The lobby bar staff are so funny and Yvonne who worked day shift there was lovely, she can make the best Brandy Alexanders. But the member of staff who made our holiday had to be Winchester the bell-hop. You cant miss him, he's got curly hairy legs and a great big smile. We loved him and have even kept in touch. We went to Dolphin cove which was brilliant, Johns Hall which we loved because they took you to a little school for children between 3 - 6. They were so cute. We also went horse riding at Chukka. This must have been the funniest bit of the holiday, when you go in the water with the horses there is absolutely no control but the guides was very good and catered for total beginners as well as experienced people. The girls enjoyed it so much that they went twice. Dont think there is anything else to add about this holiday except that we didnt want to come home. We loved the sunshine, the beaches, the hotel and the cocktails but most of all WE LOVED THE PEOPLE! They are what make your holiday, so if you treat them with respect and have a bit of fun with them then you will have a wonderful time like we did. Hopefully we will be going back next year.

"Fab - we got married !"

Overall Hotel Rating:

We had the most fabulous time here ! We decided after a long engagement to get married here and organised it direct with the hotels coordinator (organised it whilst the poor island was getting bashed by the hurricanes !). We were worried that it wouldn't go to plan or that the hotel would be too damaged, or that....well I guess we worried about everything as you do when you're getting married !

BUT....they were ABSOLUTELY AMAZING !!! They sorted everything out for us, flowers, photographer, video, vicar...everything. It all went perfectly in the gazebo down by the beach (even down to a great wedding cake), and loads of the holiday makers even came to our wedding...and our reception ! I can't praise them enough. The bar and coffee/tea machine in the room was well stocked, the restaurants fab, entertainment great ! We'll definately go back.

just returned, first time in Jamaica. lots of americans and they also let out rooms for local conferences. This posed a problem with eating arrangements for the weekend. However that was the only downside, very pleasant people and happy to help.they never rush!!!
don't forget there is alot of poor people in jamaica and yes they like being tipped but i came away feeling very lucky with what i have, they even have to pay for schooling
hotel could do with dome updating, food good but all spicy and the casablaca is worth every penny(posh nosh) and some u don't even pay for.Trips are good but
take plenty of money.lots of mozzies. If you go this time of year remember it is rainy season( torrential) but still hot from 7am. lots to do during day but not much at night.don't lrt the security put you off

This hotel complex is superb. There is always something to do and the entertainment team where fantastic especially with the kids. The kids club is very good but our daughter didn't bother with it as she preferred the pool, beach and activities the entertainment team organised. A big hello goes out to Aldane, Mona Lisa, Sharika and all the other members of the ent team.

The food was excellent there was always something different to try. Food for the kids was repetative but kids like what they like and our daughter can be very fussy(i'm sure most kids are the same). The Italian restaurant comes highly recommended very small surcharge for using restaurant.

I highly recommend swimming with the dolphins, this was an experience i will never forget. We chose to go on this trip through the Thompson Rep (Pauline) a little bit more expensive than i thought it was going to be but well worth it. We didn't go to Dunn's River Falls because we will be going back next year. I went to Nine Mile(Bob Marley's resting place). This experience sent shivers down my spine as I'm a big Bob Marley fan. Not in my opinion a place for children as the ganja is free flowing readily available(not just here but all over the island). There is a party on a saturday night in Nine Mile and although i didn't go i know a few couples who did go and it wasn't the best experience as two of the couples where fleeced of their money when trying to buy ganja.
When going outside this complex only take money with you if you intend on spending it, as the locals are very poor and will try to sell you anything they can.

Overall this holiday was superb and we'll be going back next year i hope, if not then definately the year after.

Well what can we say, my husband and I returned in February from a 2 week stay, we had a wonderful time. We didn't want to come back, especially when the pilot on the aeroplane said it was -6 degrees back in the UK!!!

The hotel is spotlessly clean, the staff are very friendly and food is great. We are both on a diet now!! The other restaurants incur a surcharge but we used the buffet restaurant all the time, there was so much choice we didn't need to dine in the others.

Pauline the rep was lovely and very funny, yeh mon!!

Dolphin trip is a must, a truly wonderful experience. We are still on a high (not from the ganga)and will be for a long time yet.

Irie Adventure is a 3 in 1 trip, this includes a punt down the Martha Brae river on a bamboo raft with a raft captain, ours was called Peter and he was very informative about the surroundings. Next stop was Shaw Park Gardens, beautiful flowers, shrubs and trees, a guide takes you around the grounds, this lasts about 30-45 minutes, he will probably expect a tip at the end. Next was the Dunns River Falls, very beautiful. Do not take your camera unless you can leave it with someone who isn't climbing the falls. A guide will video the experience but the dvd is about £20-25 to purchase.

The sea and sand is as you would expect for the Caribbean.

The only downside we found was to go out of the complex or for a nice walk along the beach you had to sign out with a security guard. We didn't go out, only on the trips. The locals patrol the beach with their wares but they won't pester you, only when you walk passed you may get them trying to sell their goods. As long as you say ";no"; then they are fine, unless you want to buy anything of course.

We would definitely go back but there is so much more to see of the world.

Enjoy yourselves if you go.

Open quote

My friend and I went for a 2 week holiday to the Starfish and absolutely loved it and didn't want to come back.

Before I say about the hotel I just want to say to anyone flying with Airtours to maybe have second thoughts, when we booked our holiday Jan 06 we booked direct flights to Montego bay and 2 weeks before our holiday were changed to fly to Manchester 1st which means we were on the plane for nearly 14 hours and then given breakfast and dinner in the space of 2 hours, we paid for extra leg room but this doesn't mean that people queuing for the loo pay any mind to this and stand right in front of you so you can't stretch out anyway and please bear in mind when booking with Airtours that they only give 30"; leg room as standard when nearly all other airlines give 33";( it makes all the difference) and on the way back the plane had technical difficulties and the crew had forgot to load any blankets and pillows on the plane which made the 8.5 hour flight ( which turned into a 11 hour flight) even more uncomfortable, I know some of the things mentioned in the above are unavoidable some of the time but the attitude of Airtours and their staff is not.

Anyway to the holiday -

We arrived at the Starfish and were given drinks as soon as we arrived but check in was a bit slow but hey that's what you get in Jamaica.

Our first week the weather was not good at all it was cloudy and the rain was terrential, that was the only downside of the whole holiday was as the weather was bad there was nothing else to do as all the activities were only available when the weather was good and there so we were quite bored in the beginning but made the time pass by working our way through the cocktail list ( which always makes time go quicker!! )

In the 2nd week the weather brighten up and we started to relax more and enjoy the sunshine, the entertainment in the day was quite good (what we saw of it, after sleeping off the rum cocktails and soaking up the sun), the reggae dance classes were the only thing I saw and they were so good coz they can move!! We found the food really good especially the pasta station and chinese nite were lovely!

We were orignally a little worried about going out to Jamaica as 2 girls but I felt just as safe there as I do in England and if any other girls are going out there don't worry you just need to be streetwise when leaving the hotel as you would be here!

I think what made our holiday all in all were the people, they were all soo friendly and the men a little flirty but all in jest, just want to say the watersport guys were the BEST and really made our stay much more enjoyable than we originally thought it would be!

So anyone going or planning to go, I'm soooooo jealous but I hope you have a great time, were going back January '08 so maybe see you there :) xxxx
