March is a great time to go because there's no rain to speak of. The Rex was everything we needed, i.e. a beach you could walk onto from the hotel, nice food (especially the fish) at the buffet and all the staff were really cool. Room was fine for 2 + 2, but we were harldy ever in it.
You could get away without spending anything if you felt like it. I lived on 'run on the rocks' and the local Piton lager (now owned by Heineken like everything else on the planet)for two weeks.
Once you leave the hotel complex it does get expensive. We went to the Buzz restaurant, and the food was lovely but the bill was > 150 GBP for a family of 4 despite me being fairly restrained on the booze front (well, almost).
St Lucia is renowned as a safe place to go. Would like to see more of the island next time, basically just did the Virgin catamaran tour (fab). Seems like Reduite Bay is the place for white sand. Can't wait to go back.

Just got back from the Caribbean, St Lucia is a beautiful and very friendly island. The Rex Papillon was a lovely and friendly hotel, rooms kept spotless, staff very friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble. Food was very good, but after 2 weeks got a little boring, try some of the local restaurants, Buzz is very good, and also the Oriental, based at the sister hotel next door, are very good for a change. All good value when you have two teenagers, who eat like horses and drink like fish!! Talking of which, you could swim with the fish and snorkle too! Go on the jeep safari, great fun, and don't miss the all day virgin catamaran trip, all good fun.
All in all a very good holiday.
We have just returned from the Rex Papillion on an all-inclusive holiday. The journey from the airport to the hotel takes approx. 1 hour and 40 mins but you are taken on mini buses so there are no multiple drop offs involved.

We were given cool cocktails when we arrived by friendly staff and once we had checked in our cases were taken to our rooms promptly.
The rooms are basic but very clean with everything you need (plenty of clean towels supplied)and air conditioning. There is also a large safe available in the room for a small charge.
The food was very good with plenty of choice. The staff in the restaurant were very friendly and were attending to all your needs immediately. You must remember that nobody rushes and there is a chilled out atmosphere everywhere.
The grounds of the hotel are kept in excellent condition with plenty of sun beds (no need to reserve them with towels!!)and lots of shade from the coconut trees.
The beach is right by the hotel with watersports available.
Free drinks and cocktails are available all day (lots of rum in the cocktails although the non-alcoholic ones are rather nice). There is also afternoon tea and cakes served everyday.
We went on a half day jeep safari which we booked through the Virgin rep. This was very good and we had an excellent guide (Jason) who made the trip fun and informative. The trip included a drive to a banana plantation and also to River Rock waterfalls. The roads are ideal for 4 x 4 vehicles which adds to the fun.
We also took an all day boat trip called ";Tout Bagay";. This was excellent and there was a real party atmosphere on the boat. We went to La Soufrier on the boat and then went by land in mini buses to visit La Soufriere sulpher volcano (bit smelly as you might expect), Diamond waterfalls and Fond Doux Estate, which is a working cocoa plantation where we stopped for lunch and a guided tour. We then returned to the boat to head back down the coast. There was a stop for a swim and a trip round Marigot Bay where Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed before heading back to Rodney Bay Mariner. We entered Rodney Bay in full party mood singing at the tops of our voices. This was an great trip and well recommended.
This was our first trip to the Caribbean and we did not know what to expect. We found the St Lucian people very friendly and always happy and smiling and often walking around singing. We would not hesitate in going back to St Lucia or the Rex Papillion in the future.
This is an absolutely fantastic hotel. The staff are extremely friendly, the service is wonderful, rooms clean and blissfully cool! Small pool, but just right for cooling off in, near all the restaurants, and 10 minutes from the beach.

Fantastic, friendly hotel located right on its own dock. Don't be put off by the fact it's not on the beach, the hotel's own boat will take you there and back or you can walk it in 15 minutes.

the 2 pools are much smaller than they appear in the brochure, but clean and most days we had them to ourselves.
accommodation is very spacious and cleaned daily, also towels and bedding changed daily. Ask for one with a view of the bay, rather than the pool.
resort itself 10 mins walk. lots of restaurants, a few bars, no clubs were open though. Restaurant prices similar to a good UK restaurant(£10-15 for main course). We stayed 2 weeks and went somewhere different every night. Didn't have one bad meal so would recommend everywhere!
TRIPS
can recommend the full day Brig Unicorn trip and horseriding on beaches and into the sea with Belle Cheval riding school.
don't bother with the Jump Up, it's dull.
Would definitely return.
