Flew out to Singapore for a 5 day city break. We flew out with Singapore Airlines, in Raffles Class, which was very nice, the food and service was exceptional.
At the Pan Pacific we booked to stay on the Pacific Floors which are the top 2 in the hotel. This gives you unlimited internet, and even better than that unlimited access to the kitchen on the 33rd floor where you can help yourself to snacks and soft drinks 24 hours a day. Between 5.30pm and 7.30 they serve cocktails in the lounge and then from 8pm liquours. They do not do small measures as I found out when I had a brandy, about £15 worth of the stuff in the glass. There is a pool and gym both of which are good, my only complaint is the water in the pool seemed cold in comparison to other hotels.
We have been to Singapore before so we didnt go back to all the sites, but we did go to Raffles for the obligitory Singapore Sling. We went to Sentosa Island, but we werent as impressed with this as before, previously you paid a 1 off fee and went wherever you wanted to, now everything has an entrance fee. If you decide to go to Singapore zoo it is easy to get to by public transport, and cheaper than the taxi, all you need to do is get to Ang Moh Kio tube station and then the 138 bus goes to the zoo. Singapore zoo is ok, we went there because my wife wanted to have her picture taken with Orangutangs.
Eating out is easy, go to Boat Quay, Clarke Quay and China Town and you get freshly cooked cheap food that is delicious. In Boat Quay some of the restaurants were doing good wine half price as a special deal.
Getting around Singapore is easy, taxis are cheap but the MRT is so easy. All you need is an EZ card (similar to oyster in London) and you can pretty well get to anywhere very quickly and cheaply. The MRT is clean and safe and above all else air conditioned.
Overall the trip was lovely, the staff at the hotel were great and did all they could to help, only down side when it rains it really rains!
Pan Pac is a fantastic hotel! We were upgraded to a suite - huge lounge, 4 poster bed, 2 bathrooms, - the best hotel room we have ever had, but we realized why we had got it when we looked out of the window, - great views of the building site that was to be...
Pan Pac is a fantastic hotel! We were upgraded to a suite - huge lounge, 4 poster bed, 2 bathrooms, - the best hotel room we have ever had, but we realized why we had got it when we looked out of the window, - great views of the building site that was to be the new swimming pool.
Singapore can seem a bit daunting at first, -there is a lot of building work going on everywhere. They are extending the MRT system, widening the roads and building more and more tower blocks. That said we really enjoyed ourselves.
Anywhere on Boat Quay is good for a few drinks and a meal,(Clarke Quay is a building site). Raffles is worth a look round,- we went on an evening tour which included a ";sling"; in the Long Bar, but you can go in on yuor own and look round the shops and museum.
Our favourite place at night was Chijmes (sic), which used to be a convent, but is now a great mix of shops, bars and restaurants of all types, set out in the courtyards. Its just across the road from Raffles!
If you have time ,then spend a day on Sentosa island. Good manmade beaches, walks, undersea world, dolfins etc.
We were very disappointed with the night safari,- couldn't see much in the dark,so the camcorder was no good, and you can't use flash photography. The zoo would have been a better bet. Changi chapel and museum were interesting, but we were rushed through so that we could visit a local market.
We had 5 nights in Singapore and it took us 4 of them to find the underground walkway from Suntec City to Raffles Place, which saves alot of walking, and crossing roads out in the heat of the day.
For good value breakfasts/snacks/lunches then ";Hans";on Raffles Link One, and any ";Delifrance"; are very good.
The Pan Pac is very expensive to eat and drink in, and shopping in the hundreds of designer stores is about the same price as back home.
We will return to Singapore, probably in a couple of years when they have finished it!
