Cavtat(savtat)is a wonderful place to stay. Not too busy, plenty of excellent resturants, cafes and bars and a wonderful ice cream parlour with 2 brilliant friendly staff, providing a huge variety of homemade ice cream. Also a very good bar(Ancora) specialising in wines local and international,(again a large range available) right on the harbour where the various boats moor up. It also had a small internet area. Again excellent staff, but we found this wherever we went.
The town has 2 harbours, the larger is where some amazing yachts and boats moor up. While we were there Tom Cruise was staying on one of Roman Abramovich's boats, it was so large it had to be moored in one the bays. This is also where you catch the boats for Dubrovnik, about an hour away. There's also a bus that takes you to Dubrovnik taking about 1/2 to 3/4 hour, every hour,it's about 10 miles away.
Cavtat has 2 large bays with very clear clean water. The beaches tend to be pebbly and rocky, but there are purpose made sunbathing areas around the bays which have areas marked off for swimming only.
Dubrovnik is a must, such a stunning city with fantastic buildings and streets and such an interesting history and vey clean. there always seems to be something going, concerts, exhibitions etc. Walking around the city via the wall is a must, it gives a you an amazing view of the city, we did it 4 times, as it has a WOW factor. No Macdonalds found there, great.
Food and drink is excellent value and the coffee is wonderful, the Italian influence.
We took a day trip to Montenegro, very close to this area of Croatia and visited Kotor, Cetinje, Budva and the mountain area, quite stunning but poverty very noticeable. We also visited some of the islands Sipan,Lopud and Miljet, all worth a visit.
Our apartment was clean with a balcony which had the smaller harbour view, owned and run by a local couple who were very helpful, they even picked us up and took us back to the airport (10mins away) at no extra charge. It had a bar underneath that the locals used and was great to use watching the world go by.
We shall be going back next year as Croatia, Cavtat seems to be the place to chill out but there is also plenty to see and do with the weather and food fantastic and the people friendly and welcoming.
