Hotel was a utilitarian building right on a rocky beach; a short walk from the beautiful and unspoilt Korcula town. The rep, Geoff, who was very helpful throughout the holiday, did his best to make the three hour journey by bus from the Airport as exiting as possible stating that there were no motorways, beautiful scenery and a panoramic view of Dubrovnik to look foward to. All this was true along with cliff hanging roads and an average speed of 20 mph. We did stop halfway for a needed drink. Then it was on the short boat ride to the isle of Korcula.
We were fully exhausted by this time, having also been delayed on the plane for an hour, waiting on the airport tarmac for ages to be let into the terminal building and retrieving our baggage from different carousels!
At the hotel we were given a nice clean room with balcony. It had a TV with the advantage that Croatian TV subtitle their programmes which are mainly British and American. The staff were very friendly and always polite. Towels were changed daily and thoroughly cleaned.
We were on a half board basis and this was the downside. Whilst the buffet breakfasts were OK (a toaster appeared in the second week adding to everyone's gourmet delights), the waiter service evening meals were almost inedible. Try dalmation spinach to put you off greens for the rest of your life. Or frog and eel stew. So after the evening meal, it was time to venture to the bar. We are not alcoholics but were slightly concerned that the bar closed at quarter to ten every night. The Hotel apparently is stll State owned and adheres tp rather rigid practices of old.
However we were warned that it was two stars only and the holiday itself was inexpensive. In fact we kept getting letters from First Choice of variations in the original brochure discription such as there is now no swimming pool, but can use one nearby, that there is no ceiling fan and the beauty room had been closed - which upset me greatly as I can do with any help that is going. Another little criticism was that there were no life saving equipment at the hotel's beach, let alone a life guard..
The resort itself is very beautiful with medieval buildings and a slow pace of life. It is just the place to wind down from the stresses of life. I would say that it is definitely not for children or those who want a lively time.On the whole prices were reasonable. Local beer, (Karlovacko is the best to my taste bud) was of good quality and cost the equivilent of £1.20 a pint in a bar. In the supermarket it was 50p + 30p returnable bottle. Delicious ice cream was 40p. Pizzas about £2.80. Suprisingly bus fares and souvenirs were expensive.
One excursion that makes you reflect was to Mostar in Hertzogovenia. This is the town that has had it's bridge restored after being blown up in 1993.It straddles the Croation and Moslem sides of the town. There is still tension as witnessed by the fully armed peacekeeping soldiers patrolling the streets. Several buildings are condemned and many are riddled with bullet holes. in them.
All in all we enjoyed our holiday in one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to.
