We arrived in Nicosia after a very exhausting day driving in the mountains and were dead on our feet.
We found the city to be a bit too busy for us and had a sort of run down feel to it although there seemed to be plenty of shops.
The only place we could find anywhere near our budget was the 3 Star Excelsior hotel which was marked on our tourist map so we were able to find it fairly easily in the complicated one way road system.
The outside looked very dated but we were not bothered and booked in for the night.
The room was small with twin beds but it was filthy and stank of stale smoke and mould.We were too tired to try and find somewhere else.
It was not recent dirt it was a build up over a period of months,especially the corners where there was a build up of a couple of inches. The carpet was hard with ground in dirt and burn holes everywhere.
There was a massive old fridge with a mini bar but we had to turn it off because of the row it made!
There was an a/c cum heater which worked OK but again was very noisy and there were wires everywhere.
TV very old with no remote but as it was only Greek channels anyway did not matter!
Bathroom was a mess with several tiles missing. Window would not shut and broken glass had been repaired with mastic!
What I could not believe was an electrical switch 1 foot above the bath in ths shower area!!
The water was hot!
We both expected to have been bitten by things during the night but were not!
When I checked the room before leaving I checked under the beds and a micro biologist would have a field day with what I saw there!
We went down to breakfast with fingers and toes crossed but to our surprise we had bacon and eggs, toast and jam which was OK although we could not see the kitchen.
The dining area was clean.
All in all it was a dump and not cheap either
