Pension U Medvidku has been a brewery since 1466. Recently it was converted into a 33 room pension, beer hall/restaurant, bar, museum and beer shop. Some of the rooms are designated as historical, maintaining lots of character of the old building. It is simple but very charming. Room 33 in the attic is quite breathtaking, with its 6 foot solid wood bed and original roof beams. Breakfast is a standard European hot and cold buffet. The food in the restaurant is simple Czech cuisine (cabbage and dumplings with everything) and very cheap (fillet steak or venison for £6). The beer in the bar is very good and cheap - around 75p/0.5L, half what it is in the Old Town Square. The staff are all very friendly and helpful, they will even arrange a car to transfer you to and from the airport so that you aren't getting ripped off by the taxis.
The Pension is very well located for all sightseeing, approx 5 min walk to the Old Town Square, Astronomical Clock and Charles Bridge (Castle is about 45mins walk). There are more than enough places to eat and DRINK within a 15 min walk of the Pension.
Prague is a beautiful city where you can either spend 7 days looking at everything or just sit in the square with a large glass of very good beer watching the world go by. There is not a lot for kids to do, so leave them at home.

U Medvidku is certainly good value for money. Chose it due to the other reviews and the excellent web site.

We paid 10% extra for a historic room and I'd recommend you do so. Rooms are spotlessly clean. Points I didn't like - the entire pension had an aroma of the cooking and beer downstairs in the Beer Hall. You could smell this from morning till night. Made me feel a bit sick especially first thing in the morning.
Beer is good and cheap - you really know you are in Czech Rep - full of friendly locals at big wooden tables all drinking pints and sharing a plate of food between 3 or 4... Personally I thought the food was revolting but maybe I'm hard to please...Watch out in restaurants for service charge. We had a lovely meal in Andels restaurant not far from the pension - jazz playing, nice wine, nice food - cheap on the menu Missed the small print with the 40% service charge!! Ended up being quite an expensive meal by local standards.
If you're going in winter take warm clothes, It is very cold. Remember the comfy boots, hat, gloves and scarf. We're not very sightseeing types, more sun and sea but Prague was very beautiful. Recommend the castle, Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, Petrin HIll. Have a drink in Old town Square in the open under the heaters and watch the astronomical clock. It's great and the prices aren't too bad considering where you are in the City. Didn't like Wencelas Square, no character, just M and S and sleezy bars.
Word of warning to smokers, you can't take cigarettes in from the Airport and once you are there the shops have only B and H, marlboro, camel etc. If you like a specific brand take them with you. Airport also has none of the brands you'd see in UK liek JP, Regal, Lambert etc etc. Can't believe it £1 a packet and I stopped smoking...... every cloud !!

booked the pension as it had a favourable review on holidays uncovered. really glad we booked it.
the pension is actually divided up into three parts. there is the accommodation part, the beerhouse part and a bar part. the rooms are really nice and very clean. we had 4 rooms booked and they were all lovely. my room was room number 2 which had 3 single beds and 1 double bed and still had loads of room . there is a separate toilet and a shower room , with two sinks. they are both very clean . the breakfast was good with a choice of hot and cold food, plenty of tea and coffee and pure juice. my 6 year old ate well!!!!
the pension is a very old building and has been restored well. next to reception is the beerhouse which also serves food. it was extremely popular when we were there but if you stay at the pension you are normally given priority. bear in mind that the beerhouse closes at 11pm. through the beerhouse is the bar which stays open until at least 3am. the drinks are reasonable and we enjoyed a few drinks in there.
the pension is right on the doorstep of most of the places to visit.(tesco is at the top of the road!) once you get a map and your bearings it is very easy to find your way around. the staff are also very helpful if you have any questions.
prague is a lovely place and i would go back again, though do beware of pickpockets they are rife. i saw a lady being picked out by 2 pickpockets as she had a bag on her shoulder that was very accessible. my advice would be to not take all your money out with you and don't put any valuables on display. as with any city be aware.
by the way the euro is now coming into prague so it may be easier to take them rather than czech koruna's .
