Where do I start?
Egypt is lovely... the people, the sites, the weather, all fantastic and could not be improved upon. Go if ever you get the chance.
The Hilton though is not!
The hotel was very shabby and the whole place could benefit from a really good clean. Not what I was expecting from a Hilton Hotel.
The only member of staff that actually went out of his way to help was the pool man, who would magically finding two seats in the shade or the sun at your request.
The rest of the staff ignored you the most of the time, never smiling.
The food was disgusting and my partner found fly eggs on his green beans on the last night. No wonder then that we both suffered badly with tummy troubles having to spend one day in our room doubled over with stomach cramps, and another two days being close to a toilet.
There where a large number of cats at the resort who seemed to have free range to go where they pleased and spent most of the nights sleeping and playing on the out side food preparation area. There was a strong odour of cats pee everywhere outside. The food for the following morning breakfast was put out the night before in the heat with the cats. Yeck.
The seat cushions both inside and out were dirty patched up and faded, the furniture outside was rusty and broken.
We booked half board through our travel agents and paid £11.00 per head to eat the evening meal every night and ate out three nights as the food was so bad and did not eat at the hotel again after my partner found the eggs.
I was also very angry to find that if you paid for your meals while you where there it was not only better, as you had a choice of restaurants, you also would pay less that the pre paid price at £8.50 per head. The Chinese was nice and they ran a three course meal for 2 at £6.00 each.
So.. Go to Luxor and see the sites and meet the lovely people and enjoy the weather but please do not book into the Hilton you will be disappointed. We were.

Hesitant about going to Egypt but read reviews on this site which were invaluable.
Obtained prices of excursions/entry fees from reviews before we went and saved ourselves a fortune by doing our own thing instead of booking with the tour reps. Don't be put off and be brave enough to do it alone and you will see a lot more sights for your money.
Taxis are cheap but remember to negotiate the price before you get in and make sure the price is not per person but for all your party. We only had one occasion where we agreed the price (making sure it was in egyptian currency), and he tried to charge us per person when we got to the hotel entrance. Stand your ground and give them what you agreed! The hotel security on the door were fantastic and saw that there was a problem and came to our defence immediately.
The staff at the hotel are fantastic - they cannot do enough for you and make you feel so welcome. In fact, we were sad to say goodbye to them as we had such fun with them.
The location of the Hilton impressed us all as it is set back from the main road with its private gardens with nile view. We compared this to many hotels during the week and agreed that the location of this hotel was far better than some of the higher rated hotels.
We enjoyed the culture and sights of Egypt and you will either dislike it or embrace it as we did. The poverty was worse than I expected even after reading reviews but having seen this, I then understood why you were hassled so much to buy goods. We had good fun hassling prices and make sure you only pay half of what was the asking price.
We will go back to Egypt again as it was impossible to do it all in one week. Temperatures ranged from 100 degrees to 123 degrees so do your sightseeing in the mornings before the heat gets too much for you.
As for food, best we found througout the week was Maxime's which don't have a licence for drink but worth detoxing for.
Have Fun!!

If staying in Luxor a must is the hot air balloon trip by sunset. It is an early start 5.15am pick up but well worth it. The balloon goes over the valley of the kings and queens and is not a bit scarey. You have no concept of how high you are 2.500 ft at one point - awesome. Got a certificate and t shirt to prove it and back at hotel 7.45am in time for breakfast. Another must is the Temples of Luxor and Karnak and the Valley of the Kings/Queens. All of these trips were booked through Kuoni we found them excellant value for money, the reps are so knowledgeable you cannot absorb all the information.
The only down side to this for us was the hotel itself we thought it was quite shabby especially the communal areas and the balcony was standing room only. Food not very nice in an evening but delicious at breakfast.
The Hilton Hotel at Luxor was horrible. The reception area and lobby was dirty. We never saw a cleaner there all the time we were there. The rooms were dirty and just the bed linen was changed, along with the towels.

The lifts did not work and got stuck. The Emergency Bells did not work and people were left stuck in the lifts in 50+ degrees, as the Air Conditioning was faulty. One couple were there for over 15 minutes. The staff just carried on with their work ignoring cries for help!
The food was awful at breakfast and the staff were just not interested. Several guests got food poisoning while we were there. Scrambled eggs for example were left on the warmers for as long as breakfast lasted (6.00 am till 11.00 am) Serving spoons were never changed or cleaned. The juice containers were not emptied and fresh juice was poured on top of old. One day, one overflowed and juice was just left all over the floor and counter, all sticky in the heat.
The sunbeds were ripped, dirty and stained. They also smelled awful, all dirty and sweaty! Even with a clean towel on if you turned on your tummy the stench was horrible.
When raw meat was delivered to the hotel it was left outside in the heat, uncovered. Not very hygienic in the roaring heat of Luxor. Flies were all around it. Guests saw this and were reluctant to eat anything after that. Some took photos.
The staff were miserable and could not even be bothered to smile or respond to hello. It was like they did not want to be there.
In the Sunset Lounge, when guests asked for their bills the waiter would just say a price and wanted you to pay in cash with no receipt. Guests asked for a receipt, as the real price was much cheaper on checking the Menu prices, so whether he was on some sort of scam I am not sure, but the price he wanted was always more than the price on the Menu and he always wanted cash.
Please think twice before going to this hotel. I have given an accurate and honest account of what I witnessed when I was there.

Hilton Luxor
This was a fantastic hotel set by the Nile. Staff are very friendly and helpful. What ever you needed it was there in minutes.
I will recommend to book your self a club room. They spacious and over looking the Nile with a great big balcony.
There are other rooms with balcony in the main building and they are all facing the Nile. Before going on this holiday I looked up on Holidays Uncovered (there was few bad reviews and to be honest I don't agree with them at all)
Shops within the hotel or out on the main strip, they will wall try hard to make money from you, but in the end of the day it's the price you want to pay not theirs.
The food in the Italian, Chinese and the restaurant by the pool they are the best to eat at. Clean food and high standard of service.
Tipping is important in Egypt, I felt sorry for many people but in the end don't go too mad giving a lot. (a taxi driver who work hard all day long and 7 days a week earns in Egyptian pounds 250 a month) which is about £ 25 sterling, so I had my own driver I trusted him for the whole week and gave him a tip of £30 sterling, which was more than a month wage. He deserved it.
