Sharm El Sheikh itself is lovely - just choose your hotel carefully and try stay in or close to Naama Bay so you don't have to get taxis. Loads and loads of restaurants / bars / shops.

We found walking around Sharm el sheikh very annoying, with touts everywhere, touts from shops what were programmed to get you into their shops with complex lines that have been dreamed up over possibly many years.

Beaches in the area are nice and impressed me though Egypt isn't for those on a budget.

We found the Egyptian shop owners pushy and insistent that you go into their shops and purchase their wares. We walked as far away from the shop entrances as possible to prevent ourselves being pulled in which defeats the purpose of shopping. Some of the shops just sold tacky touristy items. The hotels make up the resort and we stayed in ours most of the time. Beyond the hotels, Sharm is still being built with a number of unfinished hotel buildings in progress. The land is arid and not pretty inland. Best views are of the sea and mount Sinai.

The warm sea and beaches with the mountains as the backdrop were beautiful and we enjoyed the cultural differences between the UK and Egypt although it can be a bit intimidating in the markets when they hastle you - "No thank you" and a smile seemed to work well.

"Sharm El Sheikh - The Place"

Overall Resort Rating:

Average

Open quote

We stayed in Nabq Bay. The whole area is just a selection of different hotel resorts, each of which appear to be fronted by shops. Apart from a day trip to Ras Mohammed for snorkelling and diving (which was great), our whole time was spent in our hotel resort...there was no need to go anywhere else. We can't comment on the cost of food and drink as we werer all inclusive. If you want lots of excursions or even just places to walk, in our opinion, this is not the place for you. However, if you want a relaxing holiday with reliable weather, you'd be hard put to find somewhere better.

Naama bay is the place for a night out, although since my first visit in 2006 i would say the cost of drinks there have tripled, and they are keen to slap on 12% service charge for the privelege, plus 10% taxes too!! This was very disappointing. We were questioned by a stall holder as to why Brits have stopped coming here in such numbers, the huge hike in prices seems to go a long way towards this in my opinion. Seems such a shame as i suspect that, like many other resorts, they may price themselves out of the holiday market

Not a lot to do in Sharks Bay Snorkelling is the best thing about this location. We found it to be to far away to do anything, went for a drink in soho square for 2 small beers it cost £9.OO! To get into naama bay you could etheir wait for free shuttle bus or get taxis each time this could be costly.

Overall Resort Rating:

Sharm is a huge resort, covering 10 miles of coast, dotted with sprawing purpose built hotels interspersed with desert, piles of rubble and more, half built hotels. The only really worthwhile beach is at Naama Bay, which is also ringed by hotels, each with its own private section of beach. However, if you are not a guest at one of these hotels, you can get into a private beach on payment of £E30 per day (£4). This buys you a sunbed, sunshade, towel, shower and toilet facilities. There are myriad shops and cafes here, and in the rest of Sharm, but apparently the nightlife is not very exciting.

"4 star - no way"

Overall Resort Rating:

Good

Open quote

The resort is very clean, the only problem is the bar and restaurant people harassing you as you pass by. At the hotel we booked a king size bed but did not recieve it. When we asked to pay the bill at the end of our stay we were told that it had to be paid in local currency, not euros as expected. This gave us a bad exchange rate and therefore we ended up paying more for the holiday. The diving package was good with free nitrox, but some of the satff were not very good at english which caused a couple of problems. The staff were generally very nice about any of the comments passed but this did not change the fact that it is rated as a 4 star hotel when we would judge it at 3 star at best.

Apart from everyone wanting money from you and to do things for you, which gets a little annoying after a while, we had a really good time. The beach and weather are fantastic, and the camel desert trip was great fun. Best winter holiday in ages.
