My wife and I have just returned from a wonderful holiday in Annecy in the Haute Savoie region in France.
We organised the holiday independently through the Internet and booked a ten night stay at the three star Splendid Hotel in the heart of Annecy. The hotel was immaculate and was furnished and decorated to a high standard. The room had all expected features including Air Conditioning and double glazed windows with secondary double glazing to keep out any outside noise.

We had a non smoking fourth floor room, this overlooked a picturesque canal, then a large park with a mountain backdrop. All staff were extremely pleasant and courteous, and on occasion, very helpful.
French Hotels tend to be on a room only basis, with a continental or buffet breakfast as extra. We chose the buffet at 13 euros extra, this was very extensive and as much as you wanted to eat.
Having no restaurant was not a problem as the town was absolutely awash with excellent eating places. The local bakers also sell any amount of filled baguettes and cakes
The food of the region was very cheese based and I thought that the range of dishes in the area were a bit restricted. Pizza, Tartiflette, Fondue, Raclette and Fish, seemed most prominent. Local wine was all excellent by the jug or ";Pichet";

We found that the Galejade Restaurant, very close to the main bridge in Annecy, had a more varied menu, with excellent service from the staff.
The town is very old and pretty, with many small canals and waterways, all lined with flowers, restaurants and street cafes. Most of the old town is pedestrianised, and the regular street markets have to be seen to be believed for the range of fruit, produce, cheeses, sausages and salamis.
Getting about locally is not a problem with a train station and very good buses.
We went to the region for a walking holiday and the local Mount Veyrier and Mount Semnoz produced stunning and challenging hikes. Check the hidden twin waterfalls near Talloires.
We happened to be in Annecy at a period of great street festivals (Bastille day) and town activities which were fantastic.

Lake activities were all available, a two hour boat trip round the lake is a must, to see the local lakeside villages, of which Talloires must be visited.

I found the French people to be very courteous, well mannered and friendly, possibly just a little reserved. I found that attempting to speak a little French at all times was appreciated and is, I think, only good manners as you are in their country. Do not shout and point (very American) as this is understandably, met with disdain.

I had a superb holiday and will surely return one day.
