As we live in NW london, we travel quite regularly to Calais etc for shopping trips and long weekends, and use the weekend overnight special. This gives you from midday Saturday until 3pm sunday for about £35-£40. We usually leave at 9 am Saturday morning and arrive at the eurotunnel at 11 am or thereabouts. Boarding the last train before the 3pm deadline on Sunday.
I would recommend purchase of the 'eurotunnel points plus card', if you do a lot of trips on Eurotunnel. it costs £10 per year, but gives you various discounts on tickets, promotions and collection of points which can be put forward to future trips. So far, i have managed to accumlate enough points for four free trips.
Staying overnight? Then i would recommend The two Etap hotels in Boulogne - one is oppostite Le Clerc supermarket ( the only Brits there are those who know the area- no coaches) and the other is in St Martin near the centre of boulogne. The cost is about £26 per room per night at the weekend. Each room accommodates 3 max. Ther are other similar types of hotels at the top of Boulogne in the area called 'St Martins'. Roughly the same cost but hold 4 max, Hotel is called 'Premiere Classe'. There is also 'Formule one'and BandB hotel group. All are clean and offer continental breakfast at an extra cost.
For the big Hypermarket use the 'Auchan' at Boulogne as the Calais one is all Brits and coaches who will buy anything that looks drinkable as long as it costs no more than 3 euro. Some of the wines in these supermarkets are not found in the rest of France, but are soley there to repaid us for 'Agincourt'.
My self and family nearly always stay at the Etap in Boulogne centre near 'Champion' supermarket. This means you can park the car and vist the numerous restaurants in the centre and the old town. Some of these can get busy on Saturday, try and reserve a table before the evening.
During the day i recommend you drive the old coast road from Boulogne up to Calais and allow time to stop at Wimereux, Wissant and all the other places en route.
You will not have enough time on an overnighter; that is why i now go back for longer trips as there is so much to see and do. St Omer and the Marais is also good for lunch and sightseeing. If the sun shines, i recommend a drink on the front at Wimereux, you could imagine the south of France.
Bon Voyage, Nous pouvons vous voir là ?
