This was a 2 night, short break from Prestwick, booked through the Ryanair website. The flight arrived on time at Weese Airport which is about 1 hour 20 minutes from Dusseldorf City Centre.
The bus dropped us beside the main train station which is about 200 yards from the hotel.
Hotel [24 hour] reception is very small but the staff all speak very good English and were most helpful and pleasant.
A small [2 person] lift took us up to our room on the 5th floor. As was expected, this being Germany, the room was absolutely spotless. Two comfortable single beds. Adequate drawer and wardrobe space. T.V. with a couple of English speaking channels. Glass shower cabinet in the bathroom.
After a quick wash we went to explore the surrounding area.
The hotel, right in the City Centre, is opposite a massive Marks and Spencers-type store. The Schumaker Brewery is about 100 yards away on the same street. We visited the bar / restaurant in the brewery and it was definately an experience.....on entering, it looked to be full to bursting but a helpful waitress took us through 2 large rooms to a table in a further room [there looked to be more rooms beyond too]. Waiters continually circulate with huge trays of 'Alt' [dark, and VERY strong] beer. As soon as your glass is empty a fresh one is placed in front of you. We settled for Jaeger Snizzel [breaded pork cutlet in a dark sauce] and were not disappointed. It was wonderful.
Breakfast next morning was a cold buffet. Bread rolls, meats, cheese, boiled eggs, jams and preserves, tea and coffee. Enough to get one started in the morning. The restaurant [on the first floor] is quite small and on our second morning we saw about half a dozen guests having to wait for an empty table.
Dusseldorf itself is a nice City. Very clean and with friendly locals. A visit to the Altstadt [Old Town] is a must. Great shopping and eating to be had there.
To sum up....Dusseldorf is very good for a short break away from home. Much less threatening than, say, Amsterdam.
The Rheingold Hotel is ideally situated for shopping or exploring and defies its 2 star plus rating.
