This was a lovely base for our holiday. Set back on the mountain side it had fantastic views. It isnt accessabel to the beach without a taxi but its nicely away from the hustle and bustle of Herrsonisso. The streets are lined with friendly tavernas and quiet relaxing bars and local craft shops. A very relaxing and laid back atmostphere throughout the village. Would visit again.

The restaurants in Stalis are lovely especially Knossos next door to the apartments, the Artemis is great for breakfasts. The EFI family restaurant (proper Greek taverna) opposite Georges Bar was brilliant. True traditional greek entertainment. Georges bar was great value for money at 1 euro 70. Excellent value. Jasmine Chinese was also a must. We hired a car and headed up into the mountains to see more traditional Greek tavernas. This was fantastic as we watched the old woman with her sons cooking in huge outdoor ovens. A real great experience. The cost of eating out is very good, averaging between 8 and 10 euros for a good meal. The beaches are lovely and great watersports to hand. We will definitely go back to Stalis and the Latania studios. A great holiday.

Resort very, very quiet. Plenty of places to eat - no seating problems. Restaurants on sea front slightly more expensive than on main strip. Plenty of small varying priced supermarkets and gift shops and 2 pharmacies. Superb bakery on main road. Excellent long sandy beach with clear shallow water, but can become quite windy (5 minutes walk from bottom of main strip in direction of Aquarium). Visit to Water City Water Park a must. For car hire use Perla, good prices and excellent service.

We didn't actually go out into the local village as we had everything we wanted from a holiday at the hotel and came away to just relax.

Gouves in recent years has become very quiet but is an excellent base, it is very near Herssonisos and Malia if you want the night life(but be aware taxi's cost about 15 to 20 euro.

Beautiful resort with plenty of Tavernas and bars to choose from. Plenty of beaches, which are very popular with the Greeks themselves and they do get busy at week ends. Plenty of choice for eating out, spoilt for choice, but some of them do themselves no favours at all with their choice of neon signs outside. One restaurant called the Porto Fino on the front has large neon signs outside advertising quite brashly, " Pizzas and Spaghetti " Now I don't know about you but 1 of the reasons I go to Greece is for the food and I would have given this place a miss if it wasn't for a recommendation by a friend. Went in and the Greek food was all home made and amongst some of the best I've ever had, large portions as well. Boroke the habit of a lifetime towards the end of the holiday and ordered a pizza. Everything was made in front of you with fresh ingredients and I can honestly say it was the best pizza i had ever tasted! Just goes to show you can't judge a book by it's cover! If you're thinking of hiring a car, don't bother with your rep, in the toen square there is The Elounda Car Hire, Renault Megane for 2 days cost 80 Euros for 2 days for everything, insurance, tax, collision waiver.....only extra petrol. Same car via rep for same period...130 Euros!! One place to see if you hire a car is the Lassithou Plateau, easy to get to, from Elounda drive to Malia and then just turn left at the sign on the main street in Malia that points to the Plateau, I can promise you that as you climb up the mountain road to approx 2,500 ft you will be blown away by the scenery, spectacular just doesn't come near to describing it!! Driving through some of the small villages is like stepping back in time!

All the time we were at the beach it was windy so it was no good for swimming as such, we could have been unlucky I suppose. Couldn't relax too long as the lifeguard was constantly blowing his whistle!

We hired a car for 12 days of our stay which cost £360, which was very resonable. Considering that the excursions fron First Choice averaged £55 we felt we had much better value with the car. The car enabled us to explore far more of the Island than any excursions could offer. I would highly recommend visiting Elounda as the beaches were by far the best we found during our stay. Gouves beaches were also nicer than those at Gournes. It took us 40 mins at ambling pace to walk to Gouves, which was a really pleasant walk. I would also recommend the water park for a fun day out. You must try the Gyros Pitter from Gyros Corner while in Gouves!

Think of a place in England with a bit of nightlife thats a dump, well this is the sunnier version. Its a smelly hole of a place, louts, not really any sights or culture. I knew what I was going in to but didnt think it'd be this bad!
