We have just returned from a fabulous 2 weeks at the Aquila Elounda Village.

We had paid extra in advance for a superior sea view room and were not disappointed. On arrival at 6am we were greeted with a glass of champagne and allocated an upgrade to a brand new superior sea view bungalow with magnificent views over Mirabello Bay. The hotel had recently been extended although we were not made aware of this by our travel company before our holiday.

The bungalow was spacious and kept extremely clean with maid service twice a day. We received a free bottle of champagne and a bottle of wine in the room along with a bowl of fresh fruit every other day and fresh flowers regularly throughout the holiday. We also received complimentary tea and coffee and bottles of water. During our first week we received an invite to cocktails and were given a present of a greek urn ornament to take home.

The staff were all so friendly - from the reception and restaurant staff to the porters and the maids.

The breakfast was fabulous - anything you could wish for and more - and there was so much choice for your evening meal and the option to eat at any one of 3 of the hotels restaurants. The food in the Mirabello at lunchtime was particularly good.

Many people commented on the drinks being expensive although to be fair they were not much more than you would pay in bar or restaurant in town and only to be expected in a 5 star hotel.

Hotel is best suited to those people looking for a relaxing break. The walk into Elounda town took a good 45 minutes although there is a bus service from the hotel there and back 4 times a day

In our opinion it was definitely worth paying the extra for a superior room and for the views this gave.

There is still room for some improvement at this hotel but nothing major and nothing that would stop us from recommending it to others or from revisiting

Thank you Elounda Village for a relaxing and memorable holiday.

We have had one of our best holidays at Elounda Heights right through from booking direct with Ann & Vangelis by E-mail which was quick and efficient ! Even booking a taxi to meet us at Heraklion airport (65 Euros) We stayed 25th August to 8th September 2009 when we arrived we were shown to our room called Pan which was spacious and well equipped --kettle toaster and two electric rings. Added extras were a bottle of water in fridge, sachets of Tea, Coffee, Milk and Sugar to make first drinks. Also hand wash, washing -up liquid, sponge scourer, tea towel and loo rolls were supplied freely. There was a taverna on site where tasty meals were lovingly prepared by Vangelis and served by Ann. We had our 30th Wedding Anniversary while there and Ann & Vangelis gave us a bottle of Cava to celebrate! Everynight in the bar Vangelis plys you with Raki ! Every Thursday there was a Meze night where wine flowed freely and you could sample many Greek dishes and make friends with the other guests all for 25 euros per person. On Sundays you can go on Vangelis legendary boat trip from 10.00am till 3.30pm it goes around several bays where you can swim from the boat or fish. Throughout the day you sample many appetisers, Vangelis's " special orange juice" wine, beer and chicken or fish salad all for 45Euros per person ! We went both weeks and had the courage to swim from the boat because of the friendly atmosphere where we knew everyone ! A truly memorable day! It was lovely to have Toffee the cat and Henry, Lulu,Sweetie and Arnie arond to fuss and give the place a homely feel. Thanks to Jackie and Pat for lifts up the hill and informative early morning walks ! Lovely to meet Jo, Tina, Debbie, Stuart, Julie, Derek, Kev and Kerry. Special thanks Chris and Darrell for your lovely company on Knossos Trip, in the bar and early morning swims! Thanks also for the cereal ! Ha-Ha ! Ian and Jenny thank -you so much for your lovely company at cocktails by sea, meals in resort,,spending our anniversary with us on the Happy Train and introducing us to Rudi's Bar. Ann & Vangelis are wonderful, friendly hosts! Thank - you for a wonderful holiday ! We will be back !

This is a fabulous spot, the hotel is lovely in a fantastic position with breathtaking views of Spinalonga. Our room was large & spotlessly clean, as was the pool area. The food was good, Vangelis cooked my husband octopus especially 1 night after they'd been talking about it. Vangelis & Ann have a great sense of humour & make for a relaxed, inclusive atmosphere - all in all this is a really great place to spend a holiday, highly recommended.

"Elounda Heights - Apartment Review"

Overall Hotel Rating:

Excellent

Open quote

I have just returned from a two week holiday at Elounda Heights and have nothing but praise for the establishment. I have read a number of varying reviews on holiday websites, so I will try and cover a few points which haven't been already mentioned too much.

I found the service excellent at all times. For example, a broken toilet seat was repaired within a couple of hours of being reported, and the beds and towels were changed almost daily. The apartment was well-equipped and the beds were the comfortable 'Cretan' style.

I cannot recommend the food enough, if you enjoy freshly cooked authentic Greek dishes. Vangelis is a self-taught chef, and uses many of his own ingredients which are grown on-site. He is very good at utilising herbs and spices to bring the meal to life. A different 'special' is offered each night. I am a vegetarian, and Vangelis always ensured that my evening dish would stand it's own against whatever the meat eaters were served up with. I have a fair bit of experience now of eating out on various Greek islands, and whilst I have never had a problem finding vegetarian dishes, I found the food served at Elounda Heights to be of a higher quality than most of the typical Taverna fare, while being of comparable cost.

The view from our balcony was simply stunning, taking in the whole of Elounda Bay, and most of the vast Mirabella Bay and the mountains beyond as well. It looked to me as if every apartment would have a great view. Definately worth the sacrifice of the hill (pity those people staying in Elounda Residence - it's about 1/2 a mile or more further up again). Incidentally, taxi drivers do now take fares up the hill - 4 or 5 euros.

I think the Sunday boat trip has been mentioned in other reviews, so I will just add that it currently costs 45 euros, it lasts 5 1/2 hours, and is a thoroughly relaxing way of exploring the coast. I found it vastly preferable to the type of '4 hours on a crowded ferry, 1 hour sightseeing and 1 hour sponge/gold/leather hard sell' excursions I have previously been on.

You may have read that Ann manages a dog fostering service, and that there are dogs on site. This is correct, but would only be a problem for those with a fear of dogs, as the few dogs that live there are toy size and mostly just pad about from time to time. You won't catch them jumping in the pool!

I've run out of space so I will just thank Ann and Vangelis (and Henry the dog) for a memorable time.

"Elounda Heights review"

We have just returned from two weeks at Elounda Heights and here are our comments.

Elounda itself is a beautiful place, with a mix of tourist and locals. It has a picturesque harbour, clock tower and church with a mix of restaurants and bars surrounding it. The beach is beautiful with water sports and boat trips (Spinalonga is a must and can be seen from most vantage points in Elounda). The sunbeds and umbrellas are 2E each.

Try Babel for drinks (and sports - they show all the football matches etc) and to watch the world go by. Camelot does a mean milkshake after the beach. Try Megaro (first one to the right of the harbour) and Anemomilos (just to the left of the harbour across from the beach), these were our favourite two restaurants - very good value for money and excellent food.

The Elounda Heights apartments themselves are set in a beautiful location with picturesque views, they are clean, modern and well kept in lovely gardens. They have little English touches like kettle, toaster, hairdryer and welcome pack on arrival. The cleaner was the best ever! Twice a week clean towels and bedding, but you never saw her!

On the downside the hill is a real killer! What the brochures don't tell you is that the coach does not take you up the hill and taxis do not like to take fares to Elounda Heights. When we arrived Vangelis and Eddie met us in the square and ferried us to the apartments, every day after that we were mountain goats twice a day up and down the hill. We consider ourselves fairly fit but in the heat of the day we had to stop halfway up for a breather and at night after that extra glass of wine it was two steps forward and one back. It will also ruin your shoes ladies, high heels are a no - it's an unfinished, very steep, slippy track. Although on the plus side it does only take about 15 mins to get to the harbour.

There is no supermarket at the top of the hill, so any provisions have also to be carried back up the hill.

We think because of Elounda Heights' location they are not connected to mains drains which means that YOU DON'T HAVE TO BIN YOUR TOILET ROLL!

We found the pool and bar area lovely, but quite small and unless you were prepared to run out with your towels early then you couldn't get a bed. With there being four of us, the only chance of us getting 4 beds together was on a Saturday when everyone goes on Vangelis' boat trip.

Ann runs a dog sanctuary and there are regularly three dogs running around the complex and they will join you on your balcony if you happen to be around when they're passing. This was absolutely no problem for us but if you are not a dog lover .. Also when we ate in the restaurant at the apartments (which was the most expensive meal of our holiday) the dogs were begging around the tables.

We would definitely go back to Elounda again, but not to the Elounda Heights...although this is only because of the hill.

Elounda is a wonderful place, typically Greek, with lots of very good eating places and individual shops. I would recommend hiring a car to visit the surrounding area and the mountains. In October, car hire is very cheap.

Elounda Heights is up a very very steep unfinished road. I am in good health and I found the hill a real slog, especially after a good meal in the village. In my opinion anyone who is not fit could have their holiday spoilt as a consequence of the position of Elounda Heights.

The complex itself is very pleasant with a lovely elevated pool. However, in October the very basic apartment is very cold and dark. I should imagine very cool in the summer.

I would go back to Elounda, but not Elounda Heights.

We have just come back from Elounda it was a lovely place, we would definately go back again we have been to a few greek islands and this one is definately one of my favourites.

The Elounda Heights apartments are spacious and clean the owners Vangellis and Anne are very friendly people they make you feel very welcome. Vangellis likes to play jokes on you and he likes his raki too my husband got the taste for it and brought a bottle home with him. You must go on his boat trip it is good fun. Anne runs an animal sanctuary for dogs <strays etc> she is also English but has lived there for a long time with her husband Vangellis. It is worth the walk up the hill because the views are great and the hill isn't that bad either. There are some lovely restaurants along the waters edge one of my favourites was The Ferryman the beef stifado was gorgeous there. Spinalonga island is worth takihg a trip to see it was very interesting but go along with the guide because she tells you a lot about what you are seeing.
