Gouves is the kind of resort that grows on you.At first glance there doesn't appear to be much there, but when you explore the area you are able to appreciate the beautiful sandy beaches at Kato Gouves, the easy walks to the centre and the Marineworld Aquarium.Try and visit the older village of Gouves, slightly inland and a bit of a climb, but it has a lovely church and small tavernas open all year.Another worthwhile small church to visit is on the beachfront opposite avaria supermarket....we were strolling past at 11 pm to find this beautiful church lit by candles and with doors left unlocked so you could glimpse the wonderful gold icons and religious statuettes. We hope Gouves stays just as it is,a peaceful, pretty and unspoiled resort.

"Fab holiday"

Excellent holiday - would definitely go back. If anyone has been here recently please can you tell me the name of the bar opposite the Medusa restaurant. It was very trendy with flames outside and a nice Greek man called Kosta.

OverallVery Good Hotel

We have just arrived back from Ourania. Fantastic holiday in Gouves and very good place to stay. Basic studio but very clean - have been to a lot of areas in Crete and definitely loved this one.

OverallExcellent Hotel

The Magda Hotel is tucked away in the outskirts of Gouves approx 5 mins from beach. It is a 10/15 min walk to the main shopping centre, however there are some bars and supermarkets closer by.

The Hotel itself is fairly modern and kept extremely clean ...

Gouves is overall an average resort i'd say. Beach wise its terrible. Most of the beaches are sharp rocks and pebbles, the odd sandy beach is very small and very busy.

There are a lot of very samey restaurants to eat at, all selling the same greasy tourist based food which after a short time gets very sickly. Restaurants to mention are Milena ( or something, on the corner of the beach and the shopping strip ) which does very nice good. Milos is good for a more authentic Greek based place.

Shopping wise was ok, nothing to write home about.

Overall we had a good holiday, because you make it what it is. I certainly wouldn't be in a rush to return to Gouves, but with that said you can still have a fun in the sun holiday there.

We arrived at about 4am local time to the appartments, with just a key in the door and everything shut. The room was smelly and a lot of the electrical switches were brown with engrained dirt. We also couldn't get any aircon to work that night.
