The hotel is run down, bath rooms are terrible and furniture and appliances are old and abused. Bed clothes and towels are so old, it's impossible to tell whether they are clean or not (apparently they only replace it at the beginning of the season). We as...

The resort of Adelianos Kampos was great except the beach, which was a mixture of sand, pebbles, and shingle. As you enter the water beware of huge rocks, you will need to wear beach shoes!! The town itself was great, with a wide selection of shops, tavernas and restaurants. Even the supermarkets were wonderful and everyone you meet is so friendly. If the beach was better this would be almost unbeatable.

Have just returned from a 2 week holiday from here I have to say these apartments were the best we have ever had on a Greek Island. The staff were fantastic. The rooms were very clean and linen was changed regularly. The Bar-B-Q was great fun and well worth...

Rethymnon itself is very pretty; the hotel is just on the edge of the local town. There's lots of beautiful Venetian architecture, some great Tavernas and a truly excellent, well-priced pizzeria just around the corner on the way into the old town (La Piazza). We also recommend Castelvecchio, in the vicinity of the hotel (home-made food by a very friendly local family) and Taverna Lorenza also in the old town (more beautiful home-made food run by two brothers). All in all the better-quality food is around he old town area. There are lots of great bars offering alcohol for varying prices. Two very nice ones in the square where Rimondi Fountain is. A number of nightclubs that seemed popular; as we are thirty-somethings (i.e. oldies!) we did not go into them. One thing we did notice is the relative value of the pound against the euro these days and our money for meals was stretched further. Secondly, we noticed a definite trend in tavernas now serving wine by the bottle, as opposed to automatically giving you caraffes; we made a point of asking for caraffes, which is less expensive and the quality of the wine is still good. There is a beach by the harbour; we followed other reviewers' advice and avoided this, as it is used by local dog-walkers and also there are no beds. Walk along the promenade and there are plentiful well-equipped beaches offering beds and umbrellas. Word of warning - watch some of the toilets on the beach. There is one on the stretch where the water sports are and we were nearly physically sick with the smell and the fact they had obviously never been cleaned. It's great to take a walkaround the old town, along the promenade towards the venetian fortress and take in the views. There's a folk museum and and archeological museum for culture-ites. Lots of leisure opportunities in Rethymnon (water sports, cycling, pretty walks) and the area. There's a great company, the Happy Walker, that offers guided walks around the local area. Very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff who make for a special day. We also recommend taking bus trips to visit Arkadi Monastry and to walk the Imbros/Prevelli/Samarian gorges and there are also lots of boat trips available around the local caves. The public transport was quite disappointing - buses to anywhere except Chania were not as regular as they could have been, some just two per day at odd times, with one return.

Just got back from Rethymnon and all we can say is what a beautiful hotel the Ideon is! We arrived after the delayed red-eye flight from Newcastle (never again) and were taken to a room that overlooks the pool to the rear of the hotel. The hotel is well-l...
