great resort for a relaxing holiday. Beaches are not brilliant. But perfect for one week or so. Nice eateries but greece has gone quite expensive.

"Still retains its greek charm"

Overall Resort Rating:

Excellent

Open quote

Scala main street, where most of the tavernas and bars were situated is about a five to eight minute walk away along the coast road from the Hotel Anassa. Lots of great places to eat. Try the Mi Abeli Taverna or the Kaliva Taverna (Kaliva is situated down a little side street), for lots of choice, well cooked food, great service and excellent value for money. Skala beach is very long with golden sand and some shingle which shelves out to sea quite quickly. The sea is beautifully clear (take a little bread to the beach to feed the fish, the different types will surprise you), and there is nearly always a breeze blowing to cool you down as you laze on one of the many sunbeds provided. This is a great place to stay, as Skala still retains its greek charm, and the Anassa is one of the best Hotels and studios we have ever stayed in.

As we went last Sept when the £ was weak then we feel our holiday was not that cheap, but it is not about the cost sometimes, i would say the prices were about the same as England, Skala is a lively resort but such a relaxed atomoshere Vitos, Sallys and Captains Bar is a must for drinks, Aquarius for eating out. as for visiting diffrerent parts Fiskardo, Assos are Myrtos beach are a must, if you like a bit of fun well Captain Makis boat trip goes from Argostolli, allday trip, fun and games, barbacue lunch and if you are lucky (which we were) see wild dolphins. Fantastic!!

"Scala"

Scala as a resort is very nice with a great selection of taverners to eat at. Meal prices are not too bad with an average two course meal with wine (house) costing on average 35 euro a couple. What I did notice are the ridiculous bar prices with a glass of bacardi costing five euros and a small bottle of mixer (diet coke) another two euros. Beer averaged out at about three to four euros for a pint. With the exchange rate at 1 to 1 going out for a drink works out quite expensive. We spent a week at Scala and enjoyed it very much, I think a fornight may have been too long.

"Perfect!"

Overall Resort Rating:

Excellent

We are a couple in our late twneties and were looking for a resort which had a good beach, a variety of places to eat and drink with a little bit of nightlife without being manic! Skala was perfect for us!

I dont know how people can call this resort 'commercialised', yes it does cater for the tourist but there is a lovely village atmosphere and there are no British Pubs and only a few places which advertise put on 'pub quizzes and kareoke' which are not at all in your face. We actually quite like to have the option of a bit of entertainemnt after our evening meal so it suited us.

The Beach is huge and there is always plenty of space. It is sand and shingle and is some places probably more shingly. The water is lovely and clean and there a couple of taavernas behind the beach.

I would recommend the boat trip to Sami via the Melissani Lake which was a really enjoyable trip. Sami is a lovely resort with tavernas directly overlooking the harbour.

We hired a car through Greekstones which gave excellent service and compeittive rates. We found the roads very quiet so it was quite a pleasant experience touring the Island. Assos is well worht a visit.

We ate out at quite a few different restaurants and they were all great apart from our first night. Our favuorite restaurant was Aquarius and we also had a lovely meal at Symposium and The Paspalis. Socrates for its fresh fish also deserves a mention.

There are many places to go and have an after dinner drink all offereing a slightly different atmoshphere. The atmosphere in the evening was lovely and the town felt very couples and family oreintated and alwyas felt safe.

Before we went away we couldn't decide between Skala and Lourdas but I am so glad we picked Skala. Definitely the right choice. '

"A Great place to relax"

Overall Resort Rating:

Skala is a resort for couples and young families that like to relax. There are plenty of bars and tavernas but best of all no clubs or rowdy bars. This was our second visit to Skala and we have yet to see either a drunken fool or a policeman! A great place to unwind and relax.

Skala is a quiet town with little in the way of night life apart from an abundance of good restaurants and bars. If you're a party animal then this resort is probably not for you. The beach is shingle and does shelve into the sea quite steeply. The sun beds are fine and outside the Nine Muses there are staff to take orders for drinks and food etc - leaving you time to relax and soak up the sun. The weather was fantastic, mid 30s everyday, even on the occasional days when there were some clouds. If you're worried by the shingle beach, Katelios and Kaminia beaches are sandier and flatter and we spent a great day at Kaminia beach. I'd recommend the Discovering Kefalonia Tour as a great way to see the island's high spots without driving, although a car does allow you to access a greater choice of beaches.

I won't go over the beaches etc. as they have been covered above. We had good meals at The Boat, Old Times and Symposium but by far the best was Opinkolia (or something like that). You can't miss it as it has orange lights out the front with red leather cushions on the seats inside and is on the Skala to San G. road, just along toward town from the minibus stop. Service was very good and the food fantastic and good value for money. Toilets etc. excellent. In a week, we went there twice and could easily have eaten there again and again as the menu was varied and food always well presented and good portions. The waiter there was Aussie/Greek and he couldn't have been more helpful. I would advise getting a car from the airport if poss as the coach transfer, particularly on the way back was too long. Meet at 11am for a 4.30pm departure.

Skala is a village located in the municipality of Eleios-Pronnoi, some 39 kilometres south from the island's main town of Argostoli and 14 kilometres south east of Poros, in the south of Kefalonia. During the summer, Skala becomes a popular holiday destination and has a growing number of apartments, hotels, tavernas, bars and gift shops, together with the all year round supermarkets, bakery and pharmacy.

Skala's 'blue flag' beach is a three kilometre stretch of sand with a shingle foreshore with a backdrop of pine trees. The beach has a very steep entry into the sea but very beautiful and would definately recomend

"Skala, Kefalonia"

Had fantastic holiday and have fallen in love with Kefalonia! Skala is a small but lovely, chilled out resort. Had some lovely meals and the tavernas that stand out were Ta Pitharia, Mikelatos family and a little place that did the most gorgeous gyros plate- think it was Gourgios but not sure. Desserts at the Sugar Lemon are to die for! Hired car from Greekstones and within 10 minutes of driving got flat tyre, Antonis was brilliant, sorted it in no time and couldn't do enough to help. Loved Myrtos, Antisammos and Assos. Would recommend boat trip to Ithaka with Captain Vangelis, had fab day and kids loved jumping off boat into crystal clear water. After driving round island im glad we chose to stay in Skala, theres just the right amount and mix of bars and tavernas. Beach was gorgeous even though you come out of sea on your hands and knees in some pebbly areas! All in all we had brilliant holiday and would definitely recommend Kefalonia to others.

We've been coming to Kefalonia, Skala in particular since 1988. We've tried other islands but have always seemed to gravitate back to Kef. Unfortunately this may be the last visit for a while. Apart from all its other attractions, Greece used to be inexpensive. No longer it seems. Don't get me wrong, We don't penny-pinch on holiday, we go to enjoy ourselves and we spend money like water. This year prices were very steep. I know there's a recession and the pound is weak against the euro but that can't be blamed entirely. Where do they get off charging six euros for three slices of toast with a small quantity of butter and jam? Ten euros for a "full english", I could go on. The price of excursions is also steep. £80 for a barbecue cruise for two adults and a child? Think I'll avoid the eurozone and try Croatia or Turkey next year.

"Nirithes - a great place to stay"

This was our second time to Scala and the only thing that is different to the early 90s is that it has expanded. I went to see the ruins of old Scala (which is a walk of about three quaters of an hour up a steep hill, if you do go ensure it is early morning and you take water. It has been slightly spoilt since the last time because a road has been put through the middle of it thus spoiling the peace and tranquility but it is still worth seeing and taking some photos. We both love Scala and could go back again and again and usually we do not go to the same place twice. The first time we went to Kephalonia we went to Lassi but we find that Scala suits us better and we will be back again this year - 2010
