Open quote

A very well run property. The staff are constantly cleaning the common areas and the pool water is thoroughly cleaned every evening. Accommodation is the best we have stayed in, constant hot water and a good shower and decent towels. Our spacious room (106) had 2 balconies both with sea views. When you arrive in your room you are provided with a bottle of water and sachets of coffee/tea bags with pots of cream (not nice with tea). The only downside to the room was the lack of storage space in the room. We had to use the bed side cabinets for underwear as there was no other drawer space in our room. There is a very good library in reception with probably 100+ books people have left behind. Another few points not covered in brochure : Reception does exchange travellers cheques but only those in euros and there is a 2% handling fee. You are provided with toilet rolls for your whole holiday. We thought it was only an initial issue so we bought a pack of 8, but your supply is always topped up. You also get lttle bars of soap, a tea towel and washing up liquid. The safety deposit box is in the wardrobe in the room, cost 20 euros per week. You can get air conditioning at 40 euros per week. The only real downside of the property is the number of steps and the walk down to the main road by the beach. It is fine if you don't have walking difficulties and are fairly fit, otherwise it could prove difficult especially on the way back up. The walk through the lit footpath or the field can be a bit creepy at night if you don't like insects. There is a newly tarmacced road at the back of the accommodation which is an alternative and although steep at the beach end, we found easier to use, but you will need a torch at night. This road is the quickest way to the supermarket on the beach road. The pool area has plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas (the pool is on the chilly side)and a bar serving drinks and snacks at reasonable prices. We only eat there twice, the english breakfast was superb, the other meal was average. There is a BBQ every Thursday at 15 Euros each for food and wine. The poolside tables are lined up side by side on the patio in front of the bar. There is entertainment in as much as there is a gentlemen who sounds a bit like Dean Martin who sings for about 3 hours. We didn't go to the BBQ but sat on our balcony and listened to the singing - it wasn't bad but went on too long. There is also a quiz on Monday's at 1030pm. It was a bit of fun and we managed to win and get a bottle of quite nice wine. The questions are not too challenging and you do get quite a few hints from the quiz master . This is generally a peaceful laid back place which is very relaxing. There are about 50% return guests to this accommodation which must say something.

excellant, family based resort. Very friendly and accomodating staff. Very clean and all the little extras were thought of - self catering with hairdryers, microwave and toaster provided. Plenty of seating inside and outside of apartment, good views.

Have stayed here twice, and looking for a 3rd time...Close to main area, but far enough away to avoid noise from other hotels and restaurants. Is a 10 minute walk along the promanade by the sea front. Enough facilites to keep you entertained at the hotel if you want a lazy day, and close enough to town if you want some great food, the beach, or an internet cafe. Owners are welcoming...and very helpful..cant wait to return.

It was the best Greek hotel we have stayed in, it was very clean and the owners/staff were all really friendly. We had already been the previous year and would definitely consider visiting again in the future!

"Certainly not a lower division stay"

Overall Hotel Rating:

Open quote

I can’t really argue with the many excellent reports of this place and can confirm that as a well travelled couple who love the Greek islands this is the best accommodation we have had by some margin. Not only are the people who run the place very friendly and helpful but the other guests seem to be really friendly as well.

Despite the fact that my wife suffered a bad back which restricted our options for just over half of our stay, this was still an excellent holiday and I have given it top marks as you can see. However constantly reading rave reviews is not particularly informative so I am going to mention a few things that you might like to know that are not mentioned much elsewhere.

The first thing to be aware of is the location. It is totally quiet at night which is great, but the reason for this is mainly that it is a long way from anywhere. Access to the centre of Skala is not as easy as it sounds in many reports and is a non starter on foot if you have any difficulties, a bad back, or children, especially in a push chair. The answer is simple enough, a taxi will come and get you and take you home at night and costs only 5 Euro each way. Mind you over 2 weeks this could add up. 10 Euros a day will make a hole in your budget if you didn’t expect it.

The walk down involves a lot of steps, a dry river bed or a field and then 15 minutes on a reasonable footpath. In the rain, which we had a plenty in our first week (arrived on 18th May) it is not much fun.

There are no facilities for kids at all and that includes the pool. To my mind this is an adult only place and should be kept that way. There are plenty of places for Mums and Dads to take the kids and precious few where the older ones and those without children can relax like you can here.

The bar is great and cheap. We drank gallons of the local vino at 2 Euros for a double size glass, or 6 Euros a bottle. The food was fine and some of it better than that and again not overpriced. I did find however that at 25 Euros a week the safety deposit boxes were pricey. Parting with 50 Euros on arrival is not ideal. The nearest supermarket is fine and pretty well stocked but it is a long and hot walk with a 5 litre bottle of water and other essentials when it is all uphill and is not for the unfit.

The rooms are excellent but as others have mentioned contain less than sufficient storage space and the absolute minimum for self catering (not that we did any). The large bottle of water in the fridge on arrival, tea bags, coffee and milk sachets are a really nice touch though and tell you all you need to know about Nick, Vicky and Irene.

I have been deliberately picky as I would have liked to have been aware of some of the minor faults of the place before I went. The fact is we will be back as soon as we are able to go and Nick tells me that they are booked solid for the rest of the season. This place is a cut above the rest and is as welcoming a place as we have stayed.

Nick, Vicky, Irene & the team ensure a warm welcome to every guest. We stayed in one of the many sea view apartments that slept 4 - two adults, 1x18month & 1x4yr old. A clean and comfy cotbed was provided in addition to the double and single beds. The apartments were decorated and kitted out well beyond the 3* rating. Everything that i saw on the complex was to an excellent standard and in excellent condition - all kept up with by a fantastic team.

"Crystal Palace fantastic!!"

Overall Hotel Rating:

Excellent

Open quote

I returned from Kefalonia yesterday and just had to find as many sites as possible to rave about the Crystal Palace Apartments!

I was reluctant to go back to Greece as I do prefer my standard of accommodation to be slightly more than basic to say the least. The Crystal Palace is well above the basic greek standard that so many of us have experienced. Immaculate throughout: reception, rooms, pool and pool area and gardens.

Late arrival meant arriving in darkness and the route the large coach took was a little worrying but these were forgotten when the sun rose and we realised we were literally stones throw from main road and beach! But due to the dramatic coastline of Kefalonia coaches can't always take the direct route to resorts. 5 minute stroll got us to the first restaurant and a further 10 minutes into the centre of skala.

The pool bar provides drinks of all kinds and Nik, Vicky and Irene (the Greek hosts) cook and look after everyone all day until last person goes to bed! A lovely little snack menu all cooked with fresh ingredients, well presented and definitely value for money!

Nik's BBQ night every Thursday is not to be missed just the opportunity to meet other guests and have a good old sing a long with Harrison Grice! Nik does the BBQ himself and everyone gets a lovely BIG glass of wine to wash it down with.

We did not cook a single thing in the apartment as breakfast in the sunshine at the poolside snack bar was far better way to start the day! However the bottle of water, teabags, coffe and milk etc was much appreciated after a late arrival.

There is no other enterainment apart from this. So personally I think it's perfect for couples and for those with kids who are self occupied. We went week after kids went back to school and it was just heaven! Only 5 minutes from road.. but so peaceful around the pool it was perfect for a relaxed chilled week.

Hats off to Vicky and Nik on a wonderful complex that has all those little extras and finishing touches which takes it right to the top of my list to visit again!

This was our second visit to thr Crystal Palace, after a 3 year break, and the place hasn't changed. Rooms are still in first class condition and impeccably cleaned by the maids, the rest of the resort is spotless and the pool also.

Nick and Vicky the owners are brilliant, they still remember us from our first visit, our son has also returned, and guess what, they remembered him too.

Will try to revisit this September(2010), as we went beginning of May and like a late summer break also.

Highly recommend this accomodation and friendly staff, many thanks to Nick, Vicky and Irene for another pleasant stay.

We had a studio which was so big for just 2 of us. All facilities were excellant and the owners added little extras like tea coffee and water in the room as we arrived so late, so we at least could have a drink that first morning. We had a lovely view from the apartment the whole place was clean and tidy. Nothing was too much trouble for Vicky and Nick and the BBQ they put on was something else. We have been coming to Greece for 24 years and this is definitly the best place we have ever stayed.

"CRYSTAL PALACE RESORT"

we have just returned from the crystal palace resort and really enjoyed our stay, the accommodation was one of the best we have ever stayed in in greece( and we have been going since 1991). The studio we stayed in was spotless, but the view we had was of the carpark and a brickwall as we were below ground level, not very nice to wake up to each morning and we had to keep the curtains pulled across most of the day because anyone passing could see straight in. This in itself would have been acceptable if we had'nt booked 12 months in advance and asked for an high floor with a sea view. We spoke to other people staying there who had booked late and were not bothered which room they got but were given sea view rooms and upgraded to a one bedroom apartment. The owners just had'nt bothered to check who was who when we checked in and just gave out a room key. not very professional! I can only speak as I find and do not moan just for something to do but even though the place is clean and looks new a lot of people didn't like its location. Its a 5 minute walk to the beach road and another to the village, easy really, but the path you have to walk on from the rooms is cut between very tall reed like plants and if you don't like reptiles or creepy crawlies is very frightening(especially at night). The other way around to the village (the way the cars have to go) is a 35 to 40 minute walk. We hired a car for the whole week. Yes overall a lovely place and yes i would stay there again but hire a car for the whole time as i don't like feeling trapped.

Crystal Palace is far superior to what I would call ' usual Greek self catering ' accommodation I have previously encountered. No wonder the apartments are exclusive to First Choice. They would be mad to let any other Tour Operators near them. The apartments are worth more than 3 stars. They are exceptionally clean, well maintained and spacious and still have that 'new' feel to them.Bed linen and towels are regularly changed and a welcome pack of water, tea, coffee etc is a bonus. Whilst its loction is not beach front it does also mean the 10 minute walk to The Town Centre ensures the apartments are very peaceful at night. All the staff are friendly and helpful and whilst I did not spend much time at the bar the pool is good and the weekly show and BBQ was excellent. I am trying to find fault with Crystal Palace but give up cos I can't !!!

"What a fantastic place to stay."

Overall Hotel Rating:

We arrived at the Crystal Palace resort about 10.30 at night after our flight was delayed. Despite the late arrival, the owners, Nicos and Vicky, were most welcoming. We were shown to our room, (which had free air conditioning) and went straight down to the pool bar for some much needed refreshment. Nicos was more than happy to stay open as long as we wanted and even cooked us food. The apartment itself is spacious, clean and has everything you need. Most of the balconies have sea views and the rooms are very well soundproofed. The whole resort is really well designed, the cleaning is excellent and all the staff are really friendly. The beach is a 5 minute walk down a shingle path. There is a small supermarket if you turn left at the end of the path and the town itself is about a 10 minute walk along the seafront to the right. There are a lot of steps from the path up to the apartments (92 steps to our actual apartment) which were very tiring but not too bad after a lazy day on the beach or an evening of food and drink in the town. There are a few bars in the town, our favourite was a small one just off the main street called Bonnie and Clydes. Sam and Irene were very friendly and welcoming and the food was great. Only order the chicken wings if you are very hungry as it is a huge portion. We ate at the Chinese restaurant, Chopsticks, and the food was excellent as was the service. All in all, I would definately recommend this holiday and will be returning to the same apartments myself in the near future.

Very spacious accomodation, excellent pool and pool bar facilities, about 10-15 minute walk to the village centre where you will find an assortment of traditional Greek tavernas and bars, there are a number of steps to negotiate in the complex so may not suit anyone whose not the most mobile, the host Nick and his family are faultless nice little touches like greeting you off the coach, bottle of water, tea, coffee etc in the room for when you arrive..if I came to Skala I wouldnt stay anywhere else..

"Crystal service at the Crystal Palace"

Overall Hotel Rating:

Open quote

We have just come back from a fantastic holiday at Crystal Palace studios in Skala, Kefalonia. I have wanted to visit the island ever since I read Captain Corelli's Mandolin some years ago and it lived up to all my expectations.

The hotel was spotlessly clean and catered for our every need. Definately the best accommodation that we have ever stayed in abroad and a lot better than a lot of hotel's in this country. Nick, the owner met us off the coach and arranged for our luggage to be taken to our room. Our self catering apartment was just lovely. Everything had an appearance of being brand new and a lot of it was! Most of the rooms have a sea view and we were lucky and had two balconies, one overlooking the hills and one over looking the sea and the pool. Nick had thought of everything that we could ever need. Even the bathroom had the appearance of a brand new hotel(it is apparantly two years old), no damp, clean new tiles, hairdryer etc....

In terms of self catering facilities, these were very adequate for our needs and consisted of a fridge (that actually worked!), microwave (which we never used), two electric hobs, a kettle, toaster etc.. and a small basket with tea, coffee, milk for the first day. The nearest shop is a short walk away down towards the beach, turn left. Unfortunately we did not find this until we had dragged bottles of water, wine, beer etc.. all the way back from the town centre on our first day.

The pool is also beautifully clean. The pool is open 9am-8pm and the pool bar serves drinks and light snacks (hot and cold) day and night.

The beach is a five minute walk down a man made path from the hotel. This is usable but unfinished at the moment, needs a level of concentration in heels and might be difficult to negotiate with a push chair. It is however, lit at night. Skala is about a fifteen minute walk via the path and then right along the sea front.

We loved our time in Kefalonia and although we always vow to never repeat the same holiday destination, this is one place we will definately return.

I have just come home from Kefalonia with my husband and 2 children. We stayed at the Crysal Palace Resort in Skala and the holiday was fantastic. I would highly recommend the accommodation, which was clean and new. The whole complex is very well maintained by the staff, who are themselves very friendly and helpful. There is a nice sized pool, with a bar next to it serving drinks and snacks.

My children did not get bored whilst staying here although there were not many other children staying in the resort (that is Skala as a whole not just these apartments). The pool was perfect for their enjoyment although I would say my youngest (4) had to wear her armbands whilst in the pool and we had to make sure she stayed in the shallow end, those with babies and toddlers would be unable to let their children in the pool alone.

The walk to the main resort centre of Skala is very pleasant, there is a hill, but it is not too bad to negociate, and once on the main road the walk along the front takes no longer than 10 minutes and is very pleasant after a nice meal!

I would definitely consider returning to Kefalonia, which is a beautiful island and if I did, I would not hesitate in returning to the Crystal Palace Resort.
