The San Giorgio is a lovely hotel, but with one major drawback – its location, unless you like hotel-based holidays or are prepared to hire a car.
Yes we read all the reviews about it being a 45 minute walk to the nearest town of Skala, but like any true Brit we thought that we could do it in less time and we probably could have but not in 30+ degree heat.
Another problem with the location is that you can’t get a mobile phone signal in or around the hotel. We had to go into Skala town to use our mobiles.
The hotel itself looks to have evolved over a number of years and is spread up a mountainside. Luckily we had a room on the 3rd floor and only had 76 steps to climb, but we felt the pain of those guests whose rooms towered above ours.
The food in the hotel restaurant was excellent and very good value compared with the prices in Skala. This couldn’t be said of the prices in the hotel shop which were double that of the nearest supermarket 30 minutes down the road, but again if you didn’t have a car ……Breakfast was definitely an experience, lots of choice but pretty chaotic and queues for everything.
The hotel owners have made an effort to compensate for the location, with free “entertainment” 3 times a week – a Greek night, an English vocal duo and a karaoke night run by one of the holiday reps (if you like that sort of thing). There was also a free courtesy bus to Skala which ran intermittently from 10 am to 9 pm, but it filled up pretty quickly and you had to return on the next bus back which only gave you 2 hours max in Skala itself.
In the evenings we divided our time between the hotel restaurant and Penelope’s, a little taverna on the road into Skala and about a 20 minute walk away. You can’t miss it as looks like an ancient Greek sailing ship. Beware you will need a torch for the walk back and your wits about you as the taxis use the road like a race track, but don’t let this put you off as the food here was fab, especially the lamb shanks, and the owner and the staff made us feel very welcome.

The coach journey from the airport was approx 1hr very scenic. The room we were given on arrival was very small & dated tiny balcony swarming with very large wasps & flies, they were being attracted by the vines growing outside the window. We had to wait 3hrs to be allocated another room, which was great with fantastic views, but be aware the walk up to some of the rooms is a fair climb and you will need to be fit to do this. The breakfast is basic as you would expect, evening meal slow service but good food. We feel the mini bus should be run more frequently. The walk into Skala is about 40mins, do not advise to walk back as very dark and no path. Hotel and the swimming pools are spotless. Skala isn't very greek, however the rest of the Island is beautiful, we would recomend the Island tour. All in all we had a really lovely holiday.

Just returned from a fantastic holiday at Skala. I was a little worried as daughter of 18 and friend 17 were joining us for our second week and thought they would be bored, but they also loved Skala and San Giorgio, and these two are very hard to please.
First of all hotel, we had booked for two weeks, must admit initially disappointed with our apartment right by bar and pool and we had a patio rather than a balcony which was very close to the path for public. Had a word with Eddie our rep who was a lovely helpful well informed guy and he arranged for a room change for the second week.
Second room was great, fantastic views, lovely big balcony but quite a trek 100 steps in all. But expected that from description in brochure. Now for Skala great laid back but lively full of Greek people. (Always a good sign) Never had a bad meal in Skala favourites were Symposium, Pines and an authentic greek taverna by the taxi rank. Hired a car for a few days and worked out good value as trips are quite expensive.
My only critism of the San Giorgio I think the courtesy bus should run more often. Twice we were unable to reserve seats. It is a first come first served basis. You need to book each day but hey ho taxis are only 5 euros into Skala. Thought the walk in Aug into town was hard. Probably be ok when a little cooler. Saw most of the island, loved Assos and Fiskardo, lake and caves - took car on ferry to Lixouri. Loved everything about Kefalonia beautiful island and fantastic people. If you read this Eddie thanks for all your help and advice. Every time we told him where we were going he recommended, a taverna or a sight we should visit.
Brilliant holiday wished we were there now

We've just returned from our honeymoon in Kefalonia, it's the second time we've been and really love the place. There was 10 of us all together but everyone just did there own thing as skala is very appealing to all (although not for gangs of lads and girls looking for a clubbing hol).
San georgio is a beautiful relaxing clean hotel that would not disapoint. Rooms have lovely double shower with glass door, hairdryer, fridge, safety dep box and lovely views from balcony. We stayed on bandb basis and was disapointed with breakfast the bread was very hard and when toasted was even harder. All the usual jams and honey cereal, cheese and ham, tea coffee and fruit juice. The hotel has 3 pools all lovely with plenty of sun beds. Also good entertainment on most nights.
Skala is about a 40 min walk from the hotel and can be uncomfortable in the heat of the summer. A taxi will only cost 5 euro and the hotel does lay on a bus free of charge throughout the day and night. Skala is a lovely place with a main st with several streets leading off offering shops bars and restaurants. A favourite restaurant of ours was Siroco very nice food and reasonably priced. Sally's bar was another favourite offering fantastic cocktails for 3 euro.
We had a fantastic day when we hired a small speedboat from the beach in skala, we went out towards Poros and on the way saw 3 dolphins which was absolutley amazing such a thrill. Then on the way home we saw a turtle that day was one we won't forget. Also hired a motorbike and a car, you must get out and see some of the island some of the views are fantastic.
We found it quite cheep to eat and drink greek cuisine gorgeous costing around 6 - 8 euros for main meal greek salad around 5 euro glass of wine 2 euro (cheaper to get a karafe of wine) Mythos about 2 euro.
We're so depressed now we're home in the rain, weather was fantastic. Just have to keep doing the lottery hoping to win so we can upsticks and go and live there.
