The 'houses' were set in very pretty gardens with a huge variety of plants and flowers.

Our apartment was a very nice size and had a double and single bed in it. The bathroom was a nice size but we did encounter some problems with a bad smell coming from the drains, which the maid did nothing about and it took the maintenance guy 3 visits before anything was done.

The service in the restaurant was first class, which was more than can be said for the food! There were frankfurters every morning (and if they didn't go very well of a morning, were served up for evening meal in a pie). Watermelon, grapes and peaches were the only fresh fruit on offer, although there was tinned fruit in syrup. There were always a selection of food for the evening meal, but nothing seemed to go together! A couple of times they had mousaka and pastichio, but that was about all the Greek food on offer. We can only think that the choice of food available was influenced by the fact that about 95% of the guests were German.

Mastihari was a lovely quiet resort with views over a few neighbouring islands, including Kalymnos, which is an island We would recommend a visit to. The local ferry goes there a few times a day and only cost 7euros for the return trip. We caught the local bus into Kos Town 3 times as there was lots to see there. The only tour company trip we went on was to Nisyros to see the volcano. If you intend doing this trip, make sure you wear trainers or other shoes with good soles as the walkway down to the volcano is crumbly and the volcano surface hot.

Beware the local laundry in Mastihari. The lady who runs it sorted out our laundry and advised it was 2 loads but then, when we went to pick it up, told us that it had been 3 loads!!

The Horizon and the Happy Palace were both great places to eat. The Happy Palace was better on Greek specialities than snacks and the Horizon was great for snacks and cocktails.

Kos was a pleasant place to stay, but we don't think we'll be coming back. We wouldn't rate the Hotel above a 3 star for accommodation and a 2 star for food.

Have just returned from an excellent two week holiday at the Mastihari Bay Hotel.

The hotel is set in small 'house' blocks in lovely gardens right on the small beach, with an excellent pool area with a bar and snack bar overlooking the small harbour and the island of Kalymnos. Ferries run on a regular basis back and forward.

We paid a supplement for a sea view and it was well worth it, lovely to sit on the balcony in the evening with a drink and watch the sun set over the water.

The service in the restaurant and snack bar was excellent. Our room and bathroom was spotlessly clean thanks to a very cheerful and friendly cleaning lady who came in every day.

There was plenty going on in the hotel during the day for both adults and children. The Animation Team did a good job with the entertainment considering the many different languages spoken, but did not hassle you if you did not want to take part

Only complaint about the room was that the airconditioning was not available until 1st July and only operated from 3pm to 12 midnight. We opted to pay an extra 3 euros per night for our second week so that we could run this through the night and get a good night's sleep. The temperatures on several days were 30-35 degrees but with a nice breeze during the day.

Mastihari village is quite small, but has some excellent tavernas and bars. We would recommend Mavros for an excellent meal and Number One for cocktails and a friendly atmosphere.

Getting around the island is very easy with a good bus service up to Kos Town. We hired a car for three days, which we feel is enough to see the island. The road system is very simple. A trip to Zia is a must where you can get a fantastic view over the island. Visit some of the beaches on the coast down to Kefalos, Paradise Beach is very busy but there are a number of other beaches along that coastline. Kos Town is a good day out with its harbour, quaint narrow streets and several archaeological sites to visit.

This was our first visit to Kos and we wouldn't hesitate to return to the island and to this hotel.

Just returned from a wonderful holiday in Kos at the fabulous Mastichari Bay hotel. Cannot praise it enough.

Hotel: lovely. The people were all so friendly and so helpful. They made a fuss of our toddler everywhere we went, the food in the hotel was reaaly fantastic. Breakfast choices included cereals, toast, bread, hams and cheeses, cakes and fresh fruit and a huge choice of cooked breakfasts. Dinner was similarly full of choice. Kiddies menu of pizza, fish fingers, burgers, sausages and chips a bit repetitive but you could mix and match these with the ";adult"; menu which always offered a great choice. Even the house wine was good! Staff here were fantastic. Cleared plates away really fast and very friendly.

The hotel itself was wonderful. 5 mins walk to a lovely sandy beach which is great for families - the beach slopes gently into the sea. Watch out for the wonderful beaches on the south coats. They are certainly worth a visit but not great for small children as the sea covers rock. Very slippery. We liked Magic beach - stop for something to eat at the Magic Beach Restaurant. The food is great and the views breathtaking.

Back to Mastichari and I would agree with everyone else who has said if you want discos and clubs and loud music this is not the place for you. If you want a little bit of Greek it is quite possibly one of the few places in Kos you can still get it. Our room was gorgeous. Two very large rooms both with balconies and the most amazing sea views plus a large bathroom with huge shower. All spotless and very well maintained - as were other areas of the hotel. Mini club was closing down when we were there as most children back at school and season coming to a close but weather was fantastic and we were impressed by the animation team and the facilities for little ones. Even when the kiddies club rep had left the hotel we were allowed to use the mini club facilities - painting and colouring etc. All the animation team were brilliant. Alex, Chris, Francesco and our daughter's favourite - Vikki.

We travelled indepently. Booked a very last minute deal and got great value for money. Flights through Thomson £99 each and 2 weeks half board (didn't need lunch as hotel breakfasts so amazing) for the three of us in sea view room £670. Did two excursions and would not bother again - better to do them yourself I reckon. Turkey was nice but the excursion people dropped us off at a shopping centre and shut us in a room filled with over priced jewellery. Don't buy it!! Walk straight out and the bus will take you back to Bodrum. Kalymnos - easy to get to from Mastichari but there is nothing in the port town. Head straight for a taxi or bus to the other side of the island where there is at least a nice beach. We didn't and by the time we realised there was nothing to do in the port town it was too late to get to the other side have a day there and still be back in time for the 4.15 ferry!

Kos town worth a day trip but go inland a little from the harbour for better tavernas. Hired a car for 2 days which was about right for us. Saw most of the island in two days including Paradise, Magic etc beaches and Zia. My advice would be avoid Zia sunset - too many people clicking away on cameras. You get a much better one sipping cocktails in the Horizon bar on Mastichari beach!! Other place for sunset would be Asomatos from the church of Arhangelos. Quiet and romantic although there are no restaurants or bars here. Best place to eat in Zia - the Olympia.

I could go on and on about this holiday. It was so wonderful. Don't know what Mastichari will be like in a few years time as development hits but we will certainly be going back and if we do there is only one place to stay and that is the Mastichari Bay.

The Mastichari Bay Hotel is classed as 4 star and we would agree with this. It's certainly a cut above other 3 star hotels in Greece that we've stayed in.

Our room was a studio appt and it was very large with a double bed and a single bed. The bathroom was also large and had a shower (with curtain and shower head attached to the wall at the correct height!) toilet and basin. There are around 25 'houses' and each 'house' has about 4 or 5 rooms. The houses are dotted around the well kept grounds.

We did not eat in the hotel so can't comment on the quality of the food. The hotel is on the beach, and the swimming pools are on the beach, too. The beach at the hotel is ok, but at the waters edge is rocky and lots of seaweed. Its a 5 minute walk to the village from the hotel, and there is a much nicer beach in the village. Mastihari has only about a dozen tavernas (our favourite was The Seaside Restaurant) a few tourist shops and a couple of supermarkets - one very large. There are no nightclubs in the village but there are a few bars which were showing live football, but it was all very low key and quiet. There are buses from the village to Kos Town and Kardamena and a ferry to Kalymnos.

If you're looking for a quiet and peaceful holiday, with a more than decent hotel, this is the place to go! The only down side was the hotel's night receptionist. We had two encounters with him, on our arrival and our departure. He was rude and aggressive to us, but the rest of the hotel staff and very pleasant, friendly and helpful. So don't let him put you off!

The locals in Mastihari are very friendly and we felt that this was mainly due to it being a small resort. When we visited Kos Town, we noticed that the locals, although not unfriendly, weren't quite so pleasant to us as they were in Mastihari.

The staff at The Seaside Restaurant were really very nice, and the food was delicious and reasonably priced. We are quite fussy and like quality food, so we were eating things like fillet steaks and shrimps, which are not the cheapest items on the menu, and even so, we paid around 25 - 30 euros for a two course meal for two with two (sometimes three!) carafes of wine. Excellent.

Access for wheelchair users is good, both in the hotel and the village. There are ramps, although sometimes it will be quite a long way round if you use the ramps. There were 2 steps down to our room, which was the only place where there was not a ramp.

In general, a great holiday, as long as you are looking for peace and quiet.

Have visited Mastahari twice and always come away feeling relaxed and rested. Not a fish and chip shop in sight no lager louts, discos ,noisy bars just lots of nice bars and restaurants to sit and watch the world go by. The people in this small resort welcome you like youve lived there all your life. The beach is sandy but the sea can get rough ( watch out for the dreaded seaweed that comes in with the tide at a moments notice.)

I can not recommend this hotel or location enough - ideal for families with young children.

Hotel is immaculate and located in lovely gardens. We stayed half board and even my vegan neice managed to find plenty to eat in the buffet restaurant. All the staff were friendly and very hard working.

Superb childrens facilities - the large shelving childrens pool got both of my boys swimming more confidently! Also a larger than average paddling pool for babies and toddlers. Playground and play area and the hotel also ran an impressive looking kids club (though my kids can not be prised away from the pool/sea long enough to eat never mind to a kids club). Mita, one of the very energetic Animation team, even got my previously rather shy son dancing! The kids loved the little shop and the very patient lady who let them count out their Euros and Cents. My neice and I loved the cocktails (the theory being we would exercise them off next day in the pool/sea).

Mastihari itself has everything for a relaxed, peaceful, laid-back holiday - small and friendly with a beautiful beach, a lovely atmosphere, tavernas, shops, a working harbour and walks through sand dunes.

If you like bars, clubs, loud music, lots of watersports and activities this will not be the place for you.

Third time here (see below) but just giving an update. Still love this beautiful village though it has definitely started to lose its traditional charm.

This season's entertainment team at the hotel were excellent, as on all previous visits. My kids do not do ";kids clubs"; but loved the reps. Maria at the shop is lovely - if you are English stop for a chat as she misses English conversation (the majority of the guests are German and Austrian)! The staff at the main hotel bar were also exceptional again this year.

Food still good (though as usual buffet gets a bit boring by the second week of a two week stay). El Greco and Traditional House still the best two places to eat in the village.

Location still lovely but the new Water Park just down the road (very close - about E7 in taxi) already starting to have an affect. The prices in the resort have been increasing and have almost doubled in two years. Several new Tavernas being built. I am glad I saw Mastihari before it lost its charm. I will no doubt go back but not for a while and fear the impact of the Waterpark being so close by.

Water park great - kids loved it but at nearly E50 for the three of us not a cheap day out. Very safe - well patrolled and managed by staff. Park was empty as only just opened, will no doubt be buzzing by end of the season. Take a packed lunch with you - the food available was awful and very expensive!

Glad to see the grumpy beach chair man is still going strong on the main beach. Miserable as ever, telling the kids not to leave their toys sprawled around or dig holes in the sand but, on saying that, would not want him to be any other way!
