lefkas is a lovely island with plenty to do,it is also very green. we went on a few trips, island coach trip not to be missed beutiful scenery and some lovely beaches that canbe reached by car.we also went on odyeesia boat trip that went to megganisi, scorpios.and some caves.the crew were brill and we had a great day stopping of at aquiet beach for bbq and a swim, ending the day with dancing and singing. we also had a hire boat out for a day at the cost of 60 euros, best to go on a boat trip first so you know where all the coves are,we ended up at poros wich is a quiet little resort round the bay.some bars we went to are byblos, iguana, and yannis pool bar, which were quiet cheap.

here are some of the resturants thatwe found that were very good on the harbour. christinas 10/10 panarama10/10 mandarinos 10/10 barrel 10/10 apollo 9/10.on the street are ok 9/10 stone house 9/10 and tarta 9/10.

all in all we had a brill time and would go back when we finish doing all the other islands as we think GREECE is the best.

Having used this site to research our holiday I thought that I would put something back.

The hotel was excellent for the price we paid but if you paid brochure price I still think it is very good. The breakfasts were far better than the mouldy bun that I expected and consisted of fresh fruit, yoghurt, various breads, primula cheese, ham (spam sometimes), tomato, cake etc with unlimited coffee and tea. The room came with a fridge (not v. efficient but kept the tonic cold) and aircon at a price of E30/wk. Daily maid service with towels and sheets changed twice per week. The room was very clean.

Lakis, the owner was extremely friendly, greeting us on arrival and explaining the facilities. Thomas, the waiter was a font of knowledge and helped to provide a nice relaxed holiday atmosphere. All the staff were brilliant, but that is Greece. There is a small super-market next door and the hotel is 25yds from the waterfront.

As I refuse to rent a car it is important that there is a bit to do. There must be 30 restaurants down the sea-front with numerous bars. We went to Meganissi on the ferry 3 times for E1.80 a piece each way. Visited Vathy twice and Spartochori once. You get a couple of hours in each place which is enough but you can prolong it by catching a later ferry. We went to Vassiliki on scheduled bus for E1.40 each way and certainly worth the trip. The best bargain of the holiday was a day trip on a boat visiting Portho Katsiki beach, Fiskardo on Cephalonia (2hrs), Ithaca (1hr), cave on Meganissi and trip round Skorpios for E15 a piece.

As for eating out we used Hotel Oscar on 5 of the 14 nights so it must have been good. We used The Ionian for 3 nights as it was excellent food at very low prices. Starters, main courses (lamb souvlaki wonderful) and 500ml of red out of barrel was E14.75 for 2! Went to The Barrel once which was good because you got a lot and next to it was Bill's which we went to twice as their International Donner was very good and Bill is a card.We should have gone sooner. They also do a good English breakfast. Drank in Elidors next to The Barrel for 13 nights as a good view and a very nice ambience and beer only 2 euros for 500ml. So that's 11 nights, I wont mention the rest but huge amounts of salt come into it, inedible!

I have noted comments about the main street being busy but the waterfront road runs parallel so you can nip up and down little alleys to visit bakeries etc. In fact most bars front onto both such as The Elidor.
The only complaint was that we were bitten by mozzies in the first few days but seemed not to react the same after a few days.

I would certainly recommend the resort and hotel for a relaxing holiday.

This was our first trip to Lefkas, although we have travelled to many of the other Greek islands. Despite having read bad travel reviews of Nidri, we couldn't have chosen a better resort. There were enough tavernas and bars to visit a different one every night, had you wanted to, plenty of shops to spend your euros in, boats to hire, and stunning scenery.

However, it's easy to see how it could get very busy in the high season.

The Hotel Oscar offered typical Greek accommodation - plain and simple, although it did have all the mod cons - air conditioning (at an extra cost), TV and fridge. Our advice is to get the air conditioning as we took our holiday at the end of August and it was absolutely sweltering, even in the evening. Apparently the weather is good right up until Christmas.

Ask for a room with a sea view - to make the most of the scenery and enjoy the boats that visit the bay every day.

Our stay was made special by the warm welcome from the hotel proprietors - Lakis and Tomas. Tomas was educated in Wales and speaks a variety of languages so you'll have no problem getting understood.

Although the hotel was bed and breakfast only, it had its' own taverna (Kavos) which served freshly made dishes using lots of home grown products (including home made wine) and was of such a good standard that we ate there almost every night of our stay.

We will definitely be returning for another visit.

Oscar Hotel - Family run, friendly service and atmosphere. BandB basis with basic but good clean modern rooms with fridge, air conditioning and balcony. Some with sea views and some near the main road suffered a bit from the noise. Hot water available all day long. Basic breakfast was good. Cheap pool side bar and plenty of sun loungers. Supermarket next door with friendly Italian owner who went the extra mile to help when asked.

Nidri - Good location with excellent views from the front promonade and peeble beech. Laid back resort and no lager louts present whilst we were there. Lots of Greeks at the weekend and Greeks holiday there from July 1st. Very much a boating resort with yatchs etc.. Local ferry service to Megallisi, Ithaka and Kakalonia. Many boat trips and a variety of themes to choose from. Scuba diving available. Two water sports operators on the beech. Didn't see any jet skis which was good. Only down side to Nidri was negotiating the busy main road with no pavement to avoid the traffic. Unavoidable to get to the main bars, shops, restaurants etc. A road traffic accident resulted in two people injured which we thought was inevitable. Low key Police presence.

Overall Value - Having visited many other island resorts we found Nidri cheaper thsn most in almost everything.

Bars - Lots to choose from, music bars, family bars, some with comfy seats, some on the sea front, some on the main road. Even two ";English"; bars, ";Bubbles"; and ";Vic's Place"; with the usual themes, quiz nights, etc.. Large beer around 2.50 euros and cocktails around 3.80 euros.

Night Clubs - ";Tropicana"; and ";Status"; both were very quiet and didn't know they were really there as sound proofed rooms sealed in any sounds. They were there if you needed to let the hair down. Only opened on June 25th for the season.

Restaurants - ";Tratta"; grill house just off the main street was excellent. We used this for steaks and grill dishes. Cost for two with drinks around 30 euros. ";Old Flame"; restaurant on the front promonade was excellent. We used this for traditional greek dishes and fish. Cost for two including drinks around 35 euros. Other people recommended the Indian menu which looked great but we didn't try it.

Car Hire - Europcar (opposite Tratta) was very good. Suzuki Jimmy for the day cost 50 euros with comp insurance and mileage included.

Boat hire - ";Trident"; (opposite Yannis on front - look for the flag) Very nice friendly chap runs it and explains everything you need to know. You don't need to have any experience to do this. Cost us 40 euros including fuel for a 30 hp motor boat for the day. Visited surrounding islands including the Onassis island. We would highly recommend this.

We would recommend this to anyone who likes Greek Island holidays with the Greek friendliness and hospitality.

The Hotel Oscar in Nidri is in an ideal situation, on the edge of town high street,50yds from sea front marina.Friendly and helpful staff.Lovely walk along the sea front past the Cruisers and water sports to safe clean beach and tavernas.Excellent selection of eating places. TRATA a family run taverna on the high street our favourite (The Peppered Pork Fillet is special)THE BARREL also top class situated on the marina front.Good selection of bars with ";Sailors"; one of the friendliest.

For a quiet and relaxing drink after your meal the Cafe Bar AVLI opposite the Nidri Star Cruiser on the Marina front is really nice for ";watching the world go by";

For those wanting to see more of the island an island tour is reccommended, the west side of Lefkas has stunning views with some fabulous beaches and some lovely villages. This was our first time in Lefkas and was a pleasant surprise, we will definitely be going back sometime.
