"Evangelia Apartments review"
Overall Hotel Rating:
I am not surprised to see that no-one else has submitted a review on Sigri. It is an absolute hidden treasure that I, too, am loathe to tell anyone about in case it becomes a popular place to go to but I have not stopped speaking about it so hopefully by writing this, I will ";exorcise my ghost"; and stop boring all my friends and colleagues!
We booked a last minute holiday -our pre-requisite when booking was for a ";quiet, non commercialised, traditional village with no fish and chip shops and pubs";. What we got was Sigri - and what a find it was!
The journey from the airport is about 2 hours and you arrive late at night - just as well as the coach takes you through the pine forests and over the mountains - pretty scary hair bends in the daylight!
The accomodation was excellent - very very clean and beautifully maintained. One bonus with Sigri - no Mosquitoes and no Cochroaches live here! hooray!
I cannot recommend Sigri highly enough - it is heaven to all those package holiday-phobes out there. Absolutely nothing to do except wonder to one of the 7 beaches within walking distance of the village or visit the petrified forest just outside the village. The village beach was our favourite - the sea is clean, warm and is the same depth for 50m (or so) out to sea - and NO WAVES so safe for children. The locals are the most friendly I have encountered on foreign holidays - probably because there are so few tourists staying in the village - whilst we were there only 30 tourists were resident in self catering apartments in a village consisting of 400 people.
There are 9 bars/tavernas and interesting enough they all charged 2 euros for nearly all drinks - perhaps because they have a ";gentlemens agreement"; not to undersell each other. We had meals out every night and for 2 of us for 2 courses, 1 beer and ½ carafe of wine it cost on average 20 euros (£14 pounds approx). I can particularly recommend the Blue Wave (although now called Cavo di Oro)on the Harbour Front and only wish that we had discovered this restaurant on our first night as we would have been reluctant to go anywhere else in the village. You may see the owner dropping a line into the harbour to catch fish in the afternoon for that nights' soup! The seafood restaurant (Remezzos)was a huge disapointment after reading about it on the internet. The lobster tank is fascinating but after choosing ours, it was overcooked, rubbery and tasteless. The service was poor and, considering how much the meal cost compared to other places in the village, it was a total rip off.
The bakery is a definite place to visit! The whole of the bakers' family seem to congregate in the shop whilst the youngest daughter serves at the counter - and I dare you not to be tempted by the doughnuts or the fresh baked pizza slices! You will come out with a carrier bag full for a few euros!
Our rep, Jan, was the dream Rep on a get-away-from-it-all holiday. She was knowledgable, well-informed, extremely helpful, but never, ever intrusive and left us alone to enjoy our holiday without pushing trips and promotional gimmicks down our throats. Certainly the most endearing and charming Rep we have encountered.
You will get used to hearing loud speakers each day - these are the pickups and vans selling everything the villagers may need - tea towels, crockery, jeans, tee shirts, garden furniture etc etc - you name it - it arrives in the village on the back of a van!
All in all, Sigri fulfilled all our expectations and more. I think other resorts on the island may be more commercialised but if you want the traditional greek holiday - Sigri is the place to go - (only I didn't tell you that as I don't want it to become a ";tourist town";!).
It may be a late flight and a long coach journey to get to Sigri but that is what keeps it exclusive and unspoilt. My advice is go now before this jewell is found and exploited.
