If you have booked then try to cancel if you are thinking of booking this cruise please don¢t. Its cheap that¢s the only plus point. Greece is beautiful and the islands wonderful. If you manage to get off thus awful ship - whether or not the ship had a problem which is what we heard or easycruise group is too tight to pay the docking charge but this ship had to use tenders almost everywhere we went. You have to negotiate getting off of this old tug to get onto a tender in the middle of the ocean. The whole process took 3 hours one day to get us off of the ship. When you get back on you have to sit on the tender until it¢s full which takes ages. On one occasion we were truly frightened for our lives the tender could not tie onto the ship. People were praying and crying. We had a cabin on the 4th deck right next to a compressor which was on constantly. My daughter was constantly vomiting due to the fumes. It¢s old very dirty. The food is disgusting, and believe me I am not that fussy. The staff smoke in the bar so non smokers have to sit outside on the deck in the evening which is quite chilly. Absolutely, no good for children. The pool is so dirty it should have a government health warning. Easycruise life staff are very good at shrugging there shoulders and saying ¢its not my fault¢ I filled in a complaint form on ship and so far no response and have written 3 weeks ago and again not even the courtesy of an apology.

This was our 5th visit to Athens, we stay 3 days then go to the Islands, back to Athens for 2 days before flying home. we were recommended the Hotel Cecil in Monastaraki, we had stayed previously at the Athens Gate Hotel but since the Olympics in 2004, the prices have shot up to unrealistic levels, for this hotel isnt that good, so we arrived at the Cecil, room was on 4th floor, lift stops at the 3rd, room 403 was dreadful no windows, we had to leave the front door open to keep cool. as we had paid had to stop, we were told the hotel was full anyway, we were not going to stop there on our return, we had a good look around the area we like, and found a gem of a hotel. The Ava, after coming back to Athens we stayed there for 2 days, I cannot tell you how good this hotel is, yes I can it is faultless luxury. I defy anyone to dislike it. Perfect, this will be our home whenever we return to Athens.

We stayed at the Athens Gate Hotel for 2 nights at the beginning of our island hopping holiday. As it was our first visit to Athens, we were not sure what to expect but the hotel was easy to find, we just got off the Metro at Syntagma Square, walked up the main (8 lane!) road for 5 minutes and we were there.

Although the hotel seemed nothing special at the time, looking back I can say it's a nice place to stay.
Our room overlooked the main (8 lane!) road and the Temple of Olymian Zeus. Although the traffic noise was there 24hrs a day, we found watching the traffic strangely entertaining. I think the comment I read in a travel book that Athenian drivers look on traffic lights as a ";mere suggestion"; is a very apt observation.

The hotel room was the usual, fitted with TV and mini bar and the breakfast was extremely good. There was bacon, eggs and sausage if you wanted it, various cereals, yoghurts, fresh fruit, pastries, breads and cake.
The hotel is very well placed for all the sights, the Plaka district is just behind the hotel, along with the Acropolis and across the road are the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the National Gardens and the Zappion Gardens which contain an open air cinema.

The nearest Metro station is actually the Akropoli at the back of the hotel, but if it's your first visit, it may be tricky finding the hotel initially.

From the airport to Syntagma, the Metro was 12 euros for a 2 person ticket - which is quite reasonable, as a taxi journey was 35 euros. However, for 2.95 euros, you can buy a 24hr ticket and travel anywhere you like - including to the airport. When we returned to Athens at the end of our holiday, we attempted to buy a 2.95 euro 24hr ticket to get us from the airport to Syntagma, but they would only sell us the 12 euro double ticket. Shame.

Anyway, to sum up - a very comfortable, convenient hotel - but if you can't stand traffic noise, give it a miss. We enjoyed it.
