everything is exactly as described in brochure.

the accomadation, and the typically greek atmosphere. everything is close at hand. except a chemist this is 10km away but a delivery service arranged via local shop. the ATM machine has ben removed so take travellers cheques. these can be changed for the best rate at smokers corner shop. plenty to see and do. methoni. koroni, pylos. only two boat trips available. the resort centre is flat so easy to walk around. if you like to assert yourself walk over the headlands to other supermb beaches.

all the beaches are sandy some have pebbles at shore line but the water is crystal clear. stella studios are a 10 minute flat walk from the beach, are on the ground floor overlooking coutryside. plenty of birdlife to wake you but no braying donkeys thank goodness. the studios may have been refurbished, they are roomy ,marble floors, fully tiled wetroom and plenty of hot water. the owner is very helpful and friendly. bed was made every day and bins emptied daily. food and drink in the resort was excellent and not expensive.

"Finikounda Hotel review"

Overall Hotel Rating:

Very Good

Open quote

The Finikounda Hotel is a small, family run hotel, as is most of the accommodation in Finikounda. The staff are very friendly and do their utmost to ensure you are happy. Breakfast consists of bread, jam or honey, cake, orange juice and coffee or tea. The hotel is just off the main road and is only 2 mins walk to the beach. The rooms are small, but just large enough, the bathroom is typically Greek, toilet, washbasin and shower - no curtain. Plenty of hot water, never runs out, no matter when you shower. Balcony holds 2 chairs and a table. The rooms are cleaned three times a week, linen changed once a week, toilet bins emptied daily and loo rolls provided as and when required. The hotel is showing its age and is a little worn, although if you want to go please do not let this put you off.

Finikounda is a small resort, very picturesque, with one main street which runs parallel to the beach. There are a few tourist shops, selling the usual stuff, papers are sold on the day they are produced. There are 2 bakeries selling bread etc and superb Greek delicacies, pastries, buns etc. There are approx 11 tavernas, the best one, for evening meals, we found was To Steki, up a side street. Lovely food, we returned there twice, unfortunately we only found this 2 days prior to leaving. For lunch the end beach taverna (with the arched top cover) sold Gyros which were excellent. As it was nearing the end of the season the resort was starting to close down and were running out of specific foods. There are also 2 bars just serving drinks and these were well frequented in the evenings. The tavernas are not totally geared up for tourism as yet, the main course comes before you have finished your starters. The prices are cheap at present, with a 2 course meal for 2 people, with wine and water costing approx 18 euros.

The beach is shingly, has a shallow start to the sea, but slopes quickly - no messing about when you go in! There are no sun beds or brollys at present, but a couple of shops sell brollys and beach mats. (Brollys 7 euros and beach mats 2.50 euros.) The weather was a little iffy at the beginning of the week, but picked up and it was hot between the hours of 1000 and 1700. The mornings were quite calm, but in the afternoon a wind got up most days. This did lead to things flying abut on the beach and bodies being sandblasted on some days. There is only one swimming pool in Finikounda, it is a 20 min walk from the vilage. The hotel is run by Neilson, the sailing fraternity. The pool is excellent, there is a good poolside bar which serves food - but it is expensive. Non-residents are welcomed, but some people were heard saying ";Those people are using our pool have come with Kosmar."; Although it is warm during the day there was a definite need for a fleece in the evening.

Kalamata airport was quite well organised, toilets excellent, sandwiches were 4 euros each, although they were quite good and edible. The road close to Finikounda is very winding with many hairpin bends and the rep said that if you wanted to stop because you felt ill, just let her know and you could get some fresh air, so do be warned if coach travel is not your forte. On the return journey, if you leave on a evening flight do make sure that you have a mosquito spray with you because as soon as dusk appears you are surrounded by the mozzies and they bite!

A last point about the Kosmar rep, Wendy. She lives on the long beach at Finikounda with her husband and has been the rep there for the 2 years Finikounda has been in the brochure. She is excellent, a hilarious welcome meeting - not to be missed. She was appealing for people to bring her Shredded Wheat, teabags, shower gel or Melton Mowbray pies if you visit Finikounda.

Enjoy your visit to Finikounda, it is well worth a holiday there.

After travelling over the mountains to the resort of finikunda what a pleasant surprise we had. The resort must be one the most pleasant and laidback places that I have ever been to and also totally untouched by mass tourism .The locals were very helpful and friendly and really wanted to know you. The tavernas were all very good you must try them all as they are all family run and all with fresh food that as been prepared that day
We stopped in the hotel finikunda, which was very clean and pleasant, and also the staff Were very friendly and helpful this resort I would recommend to anybody who wants to go to unspoilt Greece
