We flew into Kalamata airport with Excel Air, and had a three hour transfer to the resort. After about an hour, the transfer coach stopped at a roadside taverna called Georges for 20 minutes, where you could have a coffee and stretch your legs. Even though three hours sounds like a long time, the scenery is great and the time soon passes.

The Demos Studios and Apartments are situated up a small hill just off the main road. Although the apartment seemed clean when we first arrived, this appeared to be the only time the room was cleaned in the whole two weeks. By the end of the fortnight the floors were filthy. We ended up cleaning the bathroom with some washing up liquid after the first week as it became obvious that it wasn't going to be done for us.

Towels were changed about 3 times during our stay, but the dirty towels weren't collected and were left to fester in the room. Bed linen was changed twice. The bin-emptying was haphazard, and once the full bin bag was left in the room. Our room overlooked a road, so we experienced plenty of traffic noise, not to mention the church over the road which woke you up on a Sunday morning at 6:30am with the bells chiming!

The apartments weren't very well sound-proofed from neighbours, and the first week we were kept awake by neighbours on their balcony until about 3am (you know who you are!!). The shower head was full of limescale and sprayed out at strange angles, soaking the bathroom floor despite the shower curtain. On the positive side, we had constant hot water, there was plenty of cutlery and crockery, and our room had a large balcony, although some of the others didn't. We wouldn't stop at Demos again.

The resort of Tolon however had plenty of nice restaurants and a few bars. Favourite restaurant of the holiday was Manolis on the main road, lovely Greek food and no chips. We didn't have a bad meal when we were there. Favourite bars were the Ippocampus which had spectacular views of the sea, and the best red wine we've tasted in a long time. We also frequented Nefeli Bar on the main road.

The beach started off very narrow at the harbour end, but got wider the further out of the resort you went. Sunbeds with an umbrella were 8 euros a day. The sea was lovely and calm on a morning, although the first 5 metres or so was quite rocky in places before it became sandy underfoot.

Plenty of souvenier shops and at least 4 supermarkets, plus lots of bakeries.

We booked a trip with Pegasus Cruises to Hydra and Spetses for the day. Hydra was very picturesque, but all the harbour front shops sold the same tourist tat and were quite expensive. Spetses seemed to have a better choice of bars and restaurants, plus a few beaches, and would be somewhere we'd consider going for a few days in future.

We also got a taxi into Napflion (7 Euros each way) which was about 10 minutes away from Tolon. Napflion was very picturesque also, with Venetian style buildings and piazzas you could almost be in Italy. The harbour front was lined with bars which were quite expensive, but nice to sit and watch the sunset. The town seemed very quiet when we were there.

On the whole, we enjoyed Tolon despite the accommodation.
