Open quote

This was our first holiday to Afandou and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

There are plenty of really good restaurants and cafe's available to choose from and in the 2 weeks we were there we did not have a bad meal once. The Restaurant Tasty is particularly good (as well as excellent value for money - we recommed the tomato soup and the country food), as is the Meditaranien and also a cafe/snack bar I think was called Nina's. They do a lovely breakfast, the scrambled eggs are just right and if you want to try something a wee bit different the aubergines in olive oil are a treat! There is a lovely bar called The Village that is very well decorated in blue tiles and they provide snacks on the table as soon as you arrive. It's a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by. However I did get a few mossie bites on my ankles there so I'd recommend you spray yourself liberaly with spray before you go. The drinks are about the same price as you would pay at home and about the same measures.

However if you want a far less expensive night and huge measures (and giant cheesy wotsits etc provided)then go a couple of doors down to a Greek bar called George's. There's two or 3 tables outside and it looks empty inside, but George is really hospitable, his drink is cheap and although he doesn't speak English, he's good company and he'll usually sit and have a drink with you.

The Afandou Sky hotel is situated up an incredibly steep hill. Walking up from the village is actually very pretty as it is a residential area with little houses with vines etc and families sitting on their terrace enjoying lunch etc. However once you get past there you just have to keep climbing higher and higher. The tour operator bus can't get up the last of the steep inclines (and believe me it is steep) so a member of staff comes down and picks up your luggage in a van with a trailer behind it, you're then left to walk! TThe view from our room was good though as we could see the whole village in front of us and hills to the right where the goat and sheep herders walked up with their herds every day around 4.30. Taxi's will take you up to the entrance of the hotel though, so after a night on the tiles, a taxi will only cost about 3 or 4 euros.

The pool area is lovely. Just right for relaxing in the sun. There are enough parasols and beds to go round as it's not a very big hotel.

They do quite a good spagetti bolognaise as well as stifado so if you don't fancy a walk you could eat in if you were happy with very basic fare.

The hotel provides bed and continental breakfast. Unfortunately the owner seems a bit tight with his money and a few mornings the breakfast cook, who also doubles as the cleaner, had nothing to put out for us. He charges exorbitant exchange rates as well so don't exchange money there. The hotel is also advertised as having air conditioning, however not all rooms do so. We were lucky in that we got a room with air conditioning, however we paid 60 Euros a week for the privelage.

The rooms are basic but comfortable. A couple of times I had to complain as the maid (come breakfast cook) had not cleaned it. She does not speak any English so if you are in your room when she comes to clean (as I was on one occassion) and you do the sign language etc to come back later she either does not understand or is pretending not to, but believe me she won't clean your room until you complain and then the excuse is that you were in your room etc etc. The owners nephew Costas runs the hotel and he is a pleasant amiable person unlike his uncle who all the hotel guests christened Basil Fawlty!

All in all the hotel was ok. It was a last minute deal and we got it very reasonably, however had we paid any more than we did for it I would have felt short changed. We met loads of lovely people in the hotel and it was very friendly.

We'd go back to Afandou in a minute, but perhaps not to the Sky Hotel!
