"Anastasia Apartments review"

Having previously visited Afandou ( June 2005) we again chose to return due to the good bars, restaurants and weather. We booked last minute and ended up at the Anastasia Studios about 4.30am, no one to meet and greet you, and no lights to show you the way around the small complex or pool!!.

Afandou was having a heat wave, not helped by the absence of air conditioning or even a fan on arrival at the Anastasia. I had read previous reviews but thought, due to the dates of the reviews, and the fact that Olympic had now started to use the Anastasia, then things must have improved. Wrong!! The village of Afandou is a 15 min walk, not 5 mins as the tour company claim. However Mrs. 'Anastasia' is still the owner and everything stated in previous reports is still true. Gold shop, pretends to be nice, wants to charge for fans, even if they don't work. Rooms lack proper maintenance and cleaning. Lack of bed linen and towel changes, grubby cutlery and cooking utensils etc etc.

The holiday was made by the othe people who were present, a smashing bunch who got together in and by the pool during the day and later in the evening for a chat and a drink. Had the people and pool not been present then I am sure the rep would have had a bad time, she had apparently had to a number of parties from these premises in the last couple of weeks, due to cockroaches in one room and general cleanliness issues with others.

The premises can be summed up as having potential but lacking commitment by the owners. If the premises change hands as the owner says she is selling up' then with an enthusiastic committed owner they could easily be turned into a nice set of apartments.

In short not recommended under the current regime.

T

he Anastasia apartments are truly dreadful.

Our room was dirty, smelt awful and was like a sauna. The fan did nothing and we were charged for it (10 euro per week). There were cockroaches and mouse droppings all around the room and when the ";cleaner"; came after 4 days she remade the beds with the same dirty sheets, didnt clean at all and had to be asked for another toilet roll.

The room was SO hot, I ended up sleeping on our shared balcony right by the main road on a sun-lounger for two nights. We then complained (along with most of the other residents of the apartment block) and we were moved to another hotel, which was also classed as ";basic"; but which was palatial in comparison.

Would not recommend the Ansastasia apartments. Olympic should be embarrased to have the hotel contained within their brochure.

The Anastasia studios are an absolute disgrace to the Greek people and Greece. Basically all this property needs is some maintenance and updating to make them nice basic studios, however the owner is not interested in anything apart from taking the guests to her gold shop or charging you for fan hire.

The cutlery and utensils if you had any were absolutely disgusting. The walls were all black with mould and mildew and most of the beds are ready to collapse if they haven't already done so. The cleaning was done when the cleaner felt like it and even then you would probably find your studio still with stains, dust and dirt. Again you were lucky if sheets and towels were changed throughout the duration of the holiday - if they were on the odd occassion it may just be that they had been turned over!!! Fridges consistently fail to work.

There are three blocks to these studios:

All the apartments are on ground floor and although spacious, very dark.

The newer block is most definitely the better block as they are more spacious but there is a huge problem with cockroaches and even mice in some of the studios. Also some of the bathrooms have no ventilation and can smell!

In the older block the rooms are very small and in definite need of updating.

The owner charges for fan hire...but be aware as the fans are in the room on arrival and most of them don't work effectively! Mention to your rep if you don't want them!

She is also likely to offer you a lift in to Falaraki, but conviently stops outside her Gold shop and pressurises you to go in and buy something!!

The pool itself is nice but small and its a good base to get to the village of Afandou itself or the beach! The property itself is set out in a way that all the guests can mix and chat. It is definitely not a property for families with young children as its set back off the main East Coast road. There is no pool bar as some sources state.

In summary all this property needs is some modernisation and some committment to the guests, however don't be surprised if you go through your holiday without getting anything fixed as the owner is simply not interested.

My top tip if you still feel brave enough to book these apartments is...take your Mr Muscle and bleach in your suitcase! You will need it on arrival!!!

We actually had a great holiday in Afandou - but that was no credit to this apartment block. The rooms were filthy and the sheets and towels more hole than fabric, and completely grey (I imagine they might have been white many years ago). I took photos because I couldn't believe how awful the standard was.

The owner pretends to be friendly but ripped us off over the ineffective fans. I paid for all 3 apartments to have fans, then she banged on my daughters' door while she was still in bed one morning and insisted she pay for the fan in that room instantly. We later found fans for sale in the local hypermarket for less than the cost of the rental charge!

The utensils in the 'kitchen' were grossly inadequate. We didn't plan to cook in the apartment, but if we had done, we would have struggled. The fact that it was hot meant the windows and doors were open letting out all the horrible smells of poor sanitation.

The beach was not far away, and the village is not bad. The buses, although we were not far from the bus stop, were very unreliable. A shared taxi between 4 people was a better option.

As I say, we had a great holiday despite all this. The company (my daughters and friends) was fantastic and the weather a welcome contrast to this summers' rain and cold in the UK. But we wouldn't go again.

My wife and I went on holiday for two weeks in the month of July and it was mad hot. We did not have any air conditioning [YOU COULD HIRE PORTABLE FANS - BUT NOT MUCH GOOD] so it was extremely uncomfortable due to the clammy weather, unless you had a right good bevy and you could fall asleep no problem.

The apartments were very basic but with air conditioning and a poolside bar it would probably create a more friendly atmosphere and people would get to know each other better.

The apartments are right next to a busy road so not really suitable for children. It is in a very central spot with a bus stop right outside the apartments. Taxi's are also easily available and the taxi drivers are very friendly and fair. Falaraki is 15 minutes away and Rhodes town is not far either.

The beautiful village of Afando is within walking distance, hidden behind a hill, but if you go up to the hotel straight up from the apartments, you will find a back path that takes you in to Afando. The beach is at the back of the apartments very very quiet with no real bar or restuarant facilities. [10 minutes walk]Thats if you want a quiet relaxing time sunbathing, but facilities are poor so take your own carry out. If you want a more exciting beach then go to Falaraki during the day but do not go there at night if you are over the age of 25.

Restuarants and bars are plentiful and very good [Afando] There is also a very good Greek restuarant just along the road from the apartments the name escapes me but it is owned run by a Greek family, you turn right going out the apartments and it is two minutes down the same side of the road.

The apartments are situated in a good spot for access to other places, but watch for the busy road if you are going up to Afando. Watch out for wee Anastasia who owns the apartments She has promised that she is going to put air conditioning in next year which will make the apartments more appealing. AIR CONDITIONING A MUST IF YOU GO TO RHODES AT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR. Again this is not apartments for small children, would be to boring for them, ideal for any couples who want a base to travel the island of Rhodes.
