Open quote

The hotel was not a 4 star hotel as told it has just scraped the 2 star rating. The room shown on the web page and the Olympic brochure was not the same. We were situated; in what I can only describe as ";cell block H"; and the room was very small, very tired looking. With no hairdryer as promised and a broken radio and telephone. We were told that linen would be changed three times a week, it was only changed twice, once when we arrived and the other the night before returning home.

On our last night , we actually used a courtesy room and it was just as stated in the brochure and was the Hilton compared to where we had been staying all week.

Now for the all inclusive service we booked. This complex is definitely the worst all inclusive hotel I have ever been to. No snacks (i.e. , toasties, sandwiches, burgers or chips) all we received were two biscuits and a mini sausage rolls as daily snacks. Ice creams were only for children, so too bad for us adults if we were hot and wanted an ice-cream. With a severe lack of snacks, we had no option but had to ensure we were up early for breakfast and had to continually watch the clock to make sure you had your lunch and dinner; otherwise you would be absolutely ravenous.

Talking of food, the hygiene in the restaurant was disgusting, not once during the week was any of the table cloths changed. Instead we were forced to sit around a stain ridden table. The food was absolutely disgusting and was reused and reheated for the following meal time if not eaten for lunch or dinner. There was no choice in food, everyday it was pork/veal, chips and pasta. The meat didn't look cooked properly so as a meat eater had to stay well clear of it as fear of catching food poisoning.
All drinks were cheap copies and were watered down so no thirst quenching at all.

Usually when you go on an all inclusive holiday activities and entertainment are supplied , there were no activities planned in the day and evening entertainment was very limited , with a Greek night (the same as the excursions I paid £20 for) , a rubbish live band and karaoke. We then thought we would try the swimming pool, but on our first day around the pool on the Sunday, quite a few guests had cotton wool in their ears and when we asked why they had cotton wool in their ears. It was because they all had ear infections from the swimming pool. The pool area was disgusting no clear marking of depth, cracked tiles and mould. Not once was the swimming pool cleaned and there was no chlorine in the swimming pool a sign that it is not clean.
The hotels grounds were dangerous, during the night and most of the day the grounds were watered by sprinklers. Turning the grounds into a swamp and making the limited supply of sun beds sink into the ground.

Now onto Kallithea , we were told it was a laid back resort with plenty of tavernas. Kallithea actually has four bars, five restaurants and four supermarkets. We were told that we could walk ten minutes along the beach to reach Faliraki; this was not the case. As Kallithea , only has one small shingly beach cove. Walking to Faliraki according to our representative would take at least one hour, even by taxi it took twenty minutes.
The main problem with the resort and whereabouts of the hotel was that in order to get around we had to take taxis as we were advised that public buses ran on Greek Maybe Time.
With the holiday tour operator we ended up with, instead of the promised Olympic holidays, we booked two excursions the Greek night and a boat trip to Lindos.

The Greek night was a waste of money. Told to meet at 6:45 pm coach did not turn up till 7:20 pm, driver and tour guide was rude and didn't speak a word of English. Everyone on the bus was Slovakian; Romanian, German or French we were the only two English guests on the excursion. As a result we were ignored and didn't have a clue what was going on. Our rep told us that we would have unlimited beer, soft drinks and wine, this was not the case with only two drinks all evening. Food was disgusting and dripping in Grease. All in all we could not wait to go home all in all a waste of money, because of our bad experience we decided not to go on the boat trip to Lindos and got a full refund. When we asked for a full refund the representative continued to push us to buy tickets for the excursion to Marmaris in Turkey, where it was unsafe due to bombs going off.

We decided to visit the island of Symi independently instead. It costs 19 euros from mandraki harbour, and it is a lovely island definitely worth a visit , however, maybe not by boat. Returning back to Rhodes we were stranded in Symi for 8 hours due to bad weather. Apparently it does happen quite often.

All in all i would not recommend , kallithea , sun and sky or rhodes. As my holiday was definitely a HOLIDAY FROM HELL.

weve just got back from the Kalithea Sun Hotel in Rhodes, we booked over the phone and the operator said that it would be the best place to go......

it was all inclusive and 2.5* which didn't seem bad.....oh how wrong!!!

the rooms were good, with friendly maids and they were kept very clean but if you weren't ready to leave your room for it to be cleaned by 10am, they waited outside your room until you left!

the pool is nice and well cleaned and the area surrounding it is too, but don't expect to get a sunbed- they are all taken by 5am!!!

the restaurant was appaling!! as soon as you walk in the staff are asking you for your room number and then watching how much food you get!! the food itself is awful, you have a choice of about 5 things a day, and you can't get to it until the vultures have left!!!!

the bar did have a wide variety of drinks, but the staff can be arrogant and you have to wait at least 15 minutes for a drink!

the resort of Kalithea is nice- when you finally get there, the hotel is in the middle of nowhere and the nearest beach is either 20 minutes walk away, or, if you want to go to Kalithea beach, ?5 in a taxi!!

but not to worry, eating out is cheap with the average cost of a meal for two including drinks is ?30 and the taxis are very reliable and quick!!!!

we would go to Rhodes again-but NEVER the Kalithea Sun Hotel

After booking this holiday for 15 people I saw the reviews and was worried to say the least. However, nothing could be done it was booked so I just worried for 6 months until our arrival.

The staff could not have been more friendly and helpful especially the lady on the reception - she was absolutely brilliant, nothing but nothing was too much trouble. They were the best. The rooms were basic but very clean and I mean clean behind and underneath the furniture (I looked). The showers were brilliant with actual water pressure, unlike some trickles I have had elsewhere. Maids came every day cleaned and made beds and towels were changed if required.

As for gripes on All inclusive drinks - drinks were available from 10am to 5pm at pool bar (beer, wine, soft drinks) as was ice cream for children and snacks. The main bar opens at 5pm with all inclusive up to 11pm, this included beer, wine, local spirits and soft drinks. Drinks could be purchased beyond 11pm and named brands (smirnoff etc) for those not wanting local brands could be purchased at all times and they were cheap not large hotel extortionate prices. The meals were HOT (there was no microwave for you to heat), with at least a choice of 4 different things as well as the salad bar; the evening meals were great. Do not go if you want Pizza, Chicken and Chips etc it is Greek.

The grounds are well kept and pleasant, no awful sewage smell that you get with some places (even 5 star places have had that). Sunbeds were readilly available and the place is tranquil, no noisy traffic or holiday revellers disturbing your sleep. A great time was had by all and we would go again, some were reluctant to leave. A holiday is what you make of it and some people expect too much from 3 star accomodation.

Tour operator is a different matter - I would not book with Olympic again they did not get anything right. Good job hotel staff were excellant at putting things right.

Ok where do we start...... We Arrived at half six in the morning which to start with was not the best time to be travelling especially as you've missed like a day of your holiday sleeping because you had to wait to be booked in by someone that couldn't even understand you, when we did get up we found that entertainment was limited at the resort you got tennis or table tennis for fun aswell as the -25 degrees pool, so for a 4 year old there was nothing to do but play in the baby the pool, or on the other hand go down to Playland just at the bottom of the road which obviously is only open at night cos of the heat, so basically if you got kids forget coming here unless you like your little child to be bored and moody all holiday cos' there's nothing to do.

Okay sorry a bit long i know but there's so much to write about this place honestly 4 of us are in our 20's and unless you like sunbathing for 9 hours a day its the place for you, because apart from that like i said before there is nothing and i mean nothing to do at all. There is a beach about 800m away which is NOT sand its Peeble so if you want a good beach you gotta go to Falaraki at least its SANDY!

Back to the Resort it self and onto the staff Bar Staff WORST EVER they don't listen if you ask for lets say a Vodka and Cola NO ICE you get 3 Blocks of ice and a Vodka and Orange (FIZZY), the main guy at the bar a south african guy was very unfriendly and not even willing to make conversation with the kids at the resort, Drinks were served until 11pm and need i say small plastic glasses the beer, well lager was basically VILE some people could call it you need an Aquired Taste for it, (it was really bad).

We were all inclusve but we couldn't get a drink from this main bar until 5pm if you wanted a drink you had to go to the pool side bar but it was limited drinks eg cola or lager, the only snacks that were available between meal times for all inclusive was the one Plater at the pool side bar but it was not only all incusive that were helping themselves, so much for all inclusive. Coming onto meal times the menu was very limited half the things you really didn't know what you were eating and even if you are a vegetarian (like TESS) you had to guess what had meat in it or not, the food itself if you were brave enough to eat it was COLD the majority of the time to which the waitering staff were very helpful to show you how to use the MICROWAVE yum yum nuked food!!!!!! The Salad and Chips can't really complain about those they know how to cook that, but nearly everybody was going for them on the alacarte menu, even when they put them out for the buffet you had to wait on more as everyone would have chips and salad and the other food was left for the Zillion flies in the Restaurant,

as for the waiting staff themselves they were there everyday the same people with the same sorry look on their faces, you were lucky well privelleged to get a smile from one of them for example asking for a drink you got a big HUH after you order you all know what i mean. Being Honest about the staff there were some nice one's for example the BIG GUY i think he was the manager of the restaurant always had a smile on his face and always keen to help you at any moment, also the cleaing staff were exceptional they done a good job and always had time to say hello and give you a big SMILE. As for the REP like every other ONE Very Unhelpful like it or lump it we got your money basically.

The excurtions were expensive we worked out it was cheaper to book them locally i.e trip to lindos, hotel charged 31 euros per person by boat, the local supermarket across from the hotel only charged 15 euros per person and the crew on the boat were really friendly and nice. Oh and Night time entertainment unless you like Greek Music was poor, you also get a nice TV in your room with no channels that you can understand or even see as the tuning is RIDICULOUS and there were no english channels to watch so you had a nice choice of lay by the pool and frazzle or lay in your room with no air conditioning (unless you paid for it) and be bored.

The Rooms were nice and tidy thats about it really for the rooms. In all Honestly after you read this and really think it over you will not want to go here at all its the worst place i've ever been to (DAVID Speaking here) and i really don't want to go back to it unless i'm Self Catering, as I found a Really really really Lovely Restaurant at the Top of the hill to your right of the hotel entrance/exit its called the PANORAMA TAVERN and the Gentlemen/Owner is the best guy ever not to mention Exquisite Food and Choice, Thanks for listening i really hope you don't Go to this Hotel but if your already booked ";ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY";!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My boyfriend and I have just returned from a hoilday at the Kalithea sun and sky complex. After reading severel negative entries I wasn't really sure what to expect but we had a fantastic time!

The Hotel is ideally situated for the beach and the resort is lovely not to loud but lots of lovely bars. We went to the beach most days so didn't use the hotel pool area much but it was well kept and very plesent. Our room was basic but clean and had air con with a nice balcony area. The Olympic Rep Kate was very helpful and approacable and her knowlegde of the resort and the island was very helpful.

The food was fantastic with a big variety of salads and hot dishes however if you are planning to visit Greece and expect British food then maybe it's not for you!!

I am writing to see if anyone can tell me if drinks are served from the pool bar at this hotel. There doesn`t seem to be any mention of this in the brochure, it only states main bar. I can`t understand why there is a pool bar if drinks are not served. Can any one help me?

Group of 22 adults 4 children returned 31/7/05. Accomodation basic rooms, dirty towels received on regular basis, supposed to have been washed, but still has make up on them.

Ignorant staff, I`m not generalising, not one member of staff smiled over 2 week period. Watered down short measures of local spirits at bar, (franchise bar owned by south african fella who serves behind bar). Bar staff complained that our family were drinking too much, there was 22 adults, and out of the 14 nights we ate out and stayed out 10 times.

Food very basic choice, wouldn`t have minded if it was hot and palatable. Dining room housed a microwave, sign said please re heat food if not hot enough.

By far the worst all inclusive I`ve ever been to, 2 star in Kenya much better.

In total holiday cost £14,000, I think we were entitled to a few drinks.

The rep was not helpful.
Definitely would not go back. If you are considering booking, please don`t, its a waste of your money, and a ruined precious holiday.

We booked our holiday to Kalithea sun hotel last minute, then we read the reviews and were horrified, but hey we booked so let's check it out for ourselves.

The staff could not be helphul enough, the service in the bar was fantastic, as soon as your drink was finished, a new one appeared.

Heard a lot of people complain about the food, which we thought was excellent, NO fish and chips thank god but authentic Greek food, different every day. Those who want British food, please go to Blackpool next year. We have eaten more various greek dishes during one week in the hotel than in all our previous greek holidays combined.

The rooms were basic but clean and I guess you don't go on holiday to stay in your room for a week...
Would definately go back to stay in Kalithea Sun hotel!

I went on a all inclusive holiday to the kalithea sun and sky hotel in kalithea rhodes , it was terrible, the food was aslways cold, but the gave you a microwave to heat it up !!!Management were not helpful as their attitude was we do not cater for the english.the hotl rep said the english were spoilt with inclusive in places like spain , this was a greek style inclusive, were you could not get a coffee or tea after 10am until 3pm unless you paid for it.
Snacks were left uncovered for flies and god knows what to get to before you, but it was only one snack per day no variety, no pool bar, no ala carte, no cooking facilities in the studio apartments even though it was advertised as sutch.

My party of 5 saved all year expecting to have a great time , no such luck, thank god we hired a car to get away to eat good grub. The up side was the weather and the island but never again .

Not too good. the hotel itself is not bad but the rooms are quite basic even for greece. We got stuck at the bottom with no balcony which was grim and the walls really are paper thin.

Food was as best not very appetizing but choice wasnt too bad - shame it was all a bit ropey and just warm.
pool area is great but be warned that pool is sooo damn deep.
restort is a good location for some peace and quiet with a local scooter hire place so we hired a scoot for the week to get about on
Driving in rhodes town was interesting, but the rest of the island is fine. no way near as manic as crete or corfu i felt.
symi is just amazing, go and visit and likewise with lindos, really stunning.

we went in the first week of sept 2004 and the weather was faultless all week.
you would get a far better hotel for your money but if only using as a base then you will be fine.

First of all, Kalithea is not a great resort but it is very well situated. So if you're staying here it's ideal for lazy days by the pool, day trips to Faliraki and Rhodes or hiring your own transport and seeing the rest of this beautiful island.

The hotel is rather basic and pretty noisy (slamming doors a speciality!)but at the end of the day its just somewhere to crash and its kept pretty clean with good showers too.

Breakfast is the best meal of the day so get stuck in 'cos it's downhill foodwise after that. We were on half board so at lunch time the kids would have something from the pool-side snack bar which was always tasty and pretty reasonably priced. I found bar prices a bit of a rip-off all over the island (large beer 2.20-2.50 euros the norm)cheap by our standards but pretty non-discript Greek stuff all the same, blame it on the change to the euro, everyone hikes their prices in the confusion. I work all over Europe and even canned beer was too dear here (that ryhmes!). Evening meal most nights was pretty poor fair, what with that and cost of beer I lost some weight this holiday-every cloud etc.

Initially I thought we were booked into a half-way house for convicts as everybody (both sexes) were covered in tattoos and sporting some of the ugliest football tops known to Man but this is what passes for British fashion! If you want to see how the continentals do it visit Paradise Village 10 mins away, classy hotel no Tops/Tats just a cool laid back atmosphere with tons of amenities, we actually spent more time there than the (aptly named) Sun!

In summary a good time can be had (away from the Kalithea Sun)and be sure to hire a trike from Crazy Trikes down the road, the most fun you can have with your clothes on!!

Where do you start with the Kalithea sun and sky! well it was rubbish, cr*p and all other words along the same. we arrived in the morning about 4 am, told room here follow me, this was done to escape the complaints he was geting, some of these people did not get to bed but slept by the pool!

the room was disgusting, I have seen better accomodation in the tower of london dungeons, they were dark, Damp and had NO air-conditioning and there was the local man who lived in the next room. we were to be kept here because our booked rooms were being occupied by the Poles, Germans, Russians. we eventually got into the room we had booked after two days in this dark damp and very hot (cupboard) room, hell hole.

The food was very basic and aimed at the Germans, Poles and Russians. It did change when the numbers of these fell below that of the Brits. They also get TV, Sky in the room for them. chips for kid is only available if you threaten them, the Air con, local charge can be fixed to run for free.

The pool was large but very deep and with no markings that it sloped away very suddenly. the waiters seemed to work every day. the only good thing was that we tasted all of the returants in the area bad if you consider we were on half board.
Good note this place is not on the Golden sun brochure I WOULD NOT be going back to this one even if you paid me!!!

As usual, before i went on holiday I checked this website to see what others thought of the hotel. I was fairly worried by what i read but i last year i had done the same when i stayed in Gran Canaria and the hotel had turned out to be fine.

My friend and I wanted a holiday where we could relax, but at the same time go out for a few 'wild nights!' Kalithea was perfect for this. It is a lovely, pretty and quiet little resort with a couple of gorgeous beaches. It is also situated between Rhodes Town and Faliraki, where we had the best nights ever. Faliraka was brilliant, nothing like you see on club reps. It was incredibly busy, esp as we were not even in peak season, but that just added to the fun. There was bar steet and club street which are both fairly self-explanitry. Everyone there is English so this is not where you go for a cultured night out, just a crazy night where you can dance the night away until all hours. We said we would only go there once, but once we had been we couldnt stay away! Rhodes town was also god for bars, but not many clubs. Most people here we found where Scandinavian which was good fun listening to people practicing their english with you!! A taxi to Rhodes vost about 6 euros and Faliriki about 8. This does add a fair bit of money on to your night, but the buses are not too reliable and so packed you really shouldnt bother unless you fancy someones arm-pit in your face!!

The hotel was lovely. The rooms were fairly basic, but really how much time do you spend in your room on holiday. They were clean, with beds made and clean towels everyday. The hotel staff were lovely, really friendly. The restaurant staff i had to admit were not so helpful, mainly due to the fact that they could not speak English. Our first night we didnt know the situation with dinner, and when we asked no-one could help! In the end we realised you just go up and help yourself and choose any table and the waiter/ess will come and take a drinks order. I have to admit that some of the food looked a bit scarey, but the majority of it was lovely and we had good hearty meals for brekkie and dinner.
The pool is lovely. very large with large grounds for sun-baathing.

The only thing i would suggest is be warey of the day trips Golden Sun have to offer. They are very expensive. We booked a boat trip, and after getting up at 8, sitting on the boat for 2hours not moving, they informed us rudely that we couldnt go out due to strong winds. If i were you, if you want a boat trip for a day out, go to Rhodes Town harbour, and you can choose for yourself what boat you want to go on and where you want to go. This way the boats are not too crammed with holiday companies trying to make as much money as possible by over filling the boats, and the crew are much happier and more fun as it is their personal business.

I cannot wait 2 go back again. It was an amazing holiday, the best i have ever had. The place is full of happy people just out for a good time. ENJOY.

My friend and i booked a last minute holiday via teletext and got a late deal halve the brochure price.
The flights were on time going and returning.
The accomodation was basic but clean, two beds in each apartment, fridge in mine, my friend had fridge, cooker and table and chairs.
Had bath and shower facilities.
The food was nice the salad bar was the same all week but the hot selection was varied. The pool was lovely, with a childrens pool and a separate large pool, we could sit sunbathe next to the small pool so as to be able to hear the little ones.
The resort had plenty of shops, bars and places to eat. we had gone for a quiet relaxing holiday and this resort was perfect for this.
Taxis to rhodes town where cheep at 6 euros and 8 euros to faleraki.
we went out most evenings to a local upstairs bar, the one downfall was no entertainmen for the girls a disco once or twice in the week would of been nice.
All in all it was a good last minute holiday, enjoyed by all, the weather was hot, with a slight wind to cool it down.the pool was lovely, food nice, accomodation clean, maid service every day,
we did not book any trips as we felt they where expensive and taxi's are cheep boat trips are also cheep if you book in the town.
