Nice plain type of hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. No complaints about the rooms really, they are pretty much bog standard tho so don't get your hopes up. The self catering is a real tight squeeze for two bodies, so god knows what three must be like. It is nearly impossible to work or wash dishes anywhere near the sink/kitchen unit for a start. The kettle has to sit on the cooker rings (when they're off of course) gives you an idea of the squeeze factor. It all works tho so go with the flow. We survived reasonably happy for the week anyway. Just don't get excited about where you gonna sleep thats all. By the way my pillow's were like concrete sandbags!!! The cleaners are efficient and very friendly so smile and say hello they like it and do a good job anyway. Wrote bad for the food even tho we were self catering but I always like to try it out and honestly I was left wishing I hadn't. Don't know if its me as one couple said the breakfast was good??? but having done a lot of this I will say breakfast was absolutely gopping and don't waste your money. Its blinking expensive for the slop you get thats for sure! Eat out instead its all on the doorstep anyway. Food is not an issue in Rhodes, choosing which place to eat at is, theres just so many. The swimming pool is nice but gets crowded because of the limited space. It also suffers from shade but its open and sunny thro the hottest hours of the day so if you can actually get a sun lounger (they're very comfy mind) you'll be fine. The lifts are interesting so be careful. Just the normal thing in Greece.

AN IMPORTANT WORD OF CAUTION Your baggage is being charged at 5 pound or 9 Euro over your 15kg limit at checkin. You pay on the spot, its not nice and loads of passengers were getting caught out for an extra 30 or 40 quid each time. Watch your luggage weight please!!!! Don't let it spoil your holiday to a fab place like Rhodes. Thanks, Chris

Our holiday got off to an unfortunate start as I had booked a self-catering studio and we were given a bed and breakfast room. This was when we arrived on Sunday morning, after travelling all night. Apparently there was no alternative vacant at the time, but on Tuesday we were given a very nice apartment. Otherwise the hotel was very good, though we thought the lifts were a bit dangerous.

This hotel is in the perfect place, just a few minutes from the beach and all the bars and restaurants.
It is only 10 minutes stroll to the old town which is excellent.
Best place for a lovely meal is Thomas and Charlottes Taverna.
Two good bars are The Red Lion and Tivoli
Cafe bar. The latter one has a mad owner called Michael who will keep you entertained all evening and cocktails are great.
This was my second visit to Rhodes, but definetly won`t be my last!!!

After years of spending our holidays in Spain, mainly Majorca, we decided on something different and spent a couple of weeeks in Zante. It was possibly the worst two weeks that we have ever spent away. Everything that could go wrong did and unfortunatley the experience put us off returning to Greece for a good number of years. Untill this year, when we thought ok lets try again. The travel agent came up with Rhodes, staying in the Hotel Athena in Rhodes Town.

We had a good flight from Bristol, landing in Rhodes about 6:30pm local time. The transfer time from airport to the Hotel Athena was about 30min or so. The coach was not able to drive up to the hotel because the street is quite narrow so we had to carry our cases for about 50 metres, which was no great hardship. From the outside, the hotel looked clean and well cared for. It stood out, for all the right reasons. Entering the reception, which is bright, airy, welcoming and very clean we were greeted by an extremely frendly and helpful member of staff who checked us in. We were on the 3rd floor at the front of the hotel. The room, like the reception area, was very clean. Everything worked, the shower was powerful enough to take your skin off and there was always plenty of hot water. Although, at around 7.00pm you didn't need to add any cold water through the mixer.

The beds were comfortable but the pillows were like bricks. Oh well, thats the only critisism so far. The aircon was free of charge and worked well. We also had a fridge which we kept well stocked with beer and wine,.......well, thats what a fridge is for isn't it?.The maids cleaned the room every day and changed the towels on a nearly daily basis. The sheets were changed twice a week. The outlook from the room may not be of seaviews but this is a town hotel. The balcony was a nice place to sit and relax in the early evening looking down onto the many busy bars below. As far as eating out is concerned we were just spoilt for choice.Typical prices would be about 7 to 9 euro for a main dish.

There is one place that we went to many times and had a warm welcome and good food it's called the Grill House Taman run by a couple called Andreas and Fay. The cooks name is Maria.Give it a go. When you come out of the hotel reception turn right and head for George Leontos Street, about an 8min walk. The bars around the hotel all seem to empty around 1.30am and anyhow once back in your room the hustle bustle outside is hardly noticable. The breakfast is well cooked and presented the only downside is that they allow smoking in the breakfast room. We found the best time to eat was between 7.30am and 8.00am. They served breakfast untill 10.00am.The nearest beach is about 5min away but you have a choice of beaches all within a 20min pleasant walk. When walking around the harbour toward the old town beware,THERE ARE TIMESHARE TOUTS OPERATING.They are a pest. My advice is just ignore them say NOTHING and keep walking.

From the harbour we took a 2hour boat trip to Lindos, a lovely place but the time spent there was not long enough. The best way to get there is by local bus and takes about an hour. Another wothwhile bus trip is into Falaraki, takes about 30min and it has a beautiful long sandy beach, lots of watersports and excellent food in the beach bars.Oh I could go on and on.

Would I go back to the Hotel Athena? yes without question.Hope this is of some help. Have a good holiday.

Our first trip to Rhodes and Rhodes Town. Excellent holiday.

Flights from Glasgow depart very late at night and arrive next morning in Rhodes. From the moment we landed we were looked after extremely well by both airport staff and Kosmar. Very efficient service by all.

The Athina hotel is an excellent choice for anyone wanting to stay in Rhodes town to be close to all bars and restaurants, but its location, although very central, is not surrounded by karaoke bars and you do not get a lot of noise at night.

The hotel itself is extremely welcoming, clean and bright.
The rooms are spacious and cleaned every day - towels are also replaced on a daily basis.

As a previous review stated, the picture in the Kosmar brochure does not do the Athina any justice - it is far nicer than you would expect - it was on a previous review that we decided to book into the Athina and are glad we did - many thanks John, July 2004.

As our return flight had a 4am pickup, we were also able to arrange an extension on our room until that time which was excellent - the hotel will do everything they can to help you in this respect.

Ther are many really good restaurants in the area. Recommend Victoria restaurant and Yamas restaurant - excellent food, excellent price
Rhodes is a very cosmopolitan resort with lots of different nationalities visiting the island, which adds to the experience.
A walk around the old town and visit to the Palace of the Knights of St John (6 Euros) is a must. Do what we did - take a few wrong turns and get lost in the old town - you see so much more that the usual tourist's shops and meet a lot of nice locals.
The purpose of our holiday was to learn to scuba dive.

We chose to do our 4 day PADI open water qualification with DiveMed College.

DiveMed are extremely professional, with excellent facilities on the dive boat and the instructors are first class. You are looked after from the moment you get on board and are monitored at all times under the water. Most class sizes are extremely small and you receive excellent instruction.

I cannot praise DiveMed enough - needless to say we both passed our course and are now qualified divers.

Diving around Rhodes is restricted to only a few sites, as there are still a lot of sites protected by the Greek government for archaeological purposes. Hopefully more sites will open up in the future.

The clear seas around Rhodes make it excellent for diving and you will not be disappointed with the abundance and variety of sealife, from octopus to Grouper and everything in between!

Choose to visit Rhodes and stay at the Athina - you will not be disappointed.

This has to be the best holiday i have ever had.
The hotel was perfect location,2 minutes walk from the beach, bars and restaurants. Its very clean, they come round every morning and the rooms smell of marseypan when they have left... makes you hungry!
The main area for bars and nightclubs is just round the corner,on bar street.. but dont worry you dont hear any noise at all from the hotel.

The resort of rhodes town is stunning, the old harbour where all the boats dock and some fantanstic ships is great, you can sit and have a drink and watch the world go by.
A walk into the old castle is a must, where there is plenty of shops selling everything from leather shoes to fancy jewlery!!!

There is a excellent restaurant in the main square near the fountain, i cant remember the name of it as its in greek, but it has a roof top restaurant overlooking the castle walls.
If you love shopping then a walk into the new town is a must, there is lots of designer shops.also the main bus station is there which will take you into other resorts, we went to lindos twice it only cost 4 euros on the bus- it takes 1 hour to get there but its worth every minute... take plenty of water with you beacuse its very hard work walking up to the acropalis at the top of lindos bay, but the views are amazing... plenty of picture's.All the streets are white washed house and sell all sorts- you can haggle to get the price you want...
We went to falaraki waterpark, which was great, there is a free bus which picks u up in rhodes town and takes you there and brings u back again.

This is my second time to rhodes and i loved every minute of it... id live there if i could!!!!
oh yeah one last thing you must go to the restaurant international in rhodes town, the food is excellent-say hi to yannis and for us,he'll have you laughing all night...i recommend the salmon and prawn paster..
also go to the red restaurant, the duck is lovely!!!

Well i could go on forever ,so if ur thinking about it, go you wont be dissapointed.... i promise!!!!

Arrived at the Athina Hotel after a delayed overnight flight. Not our choice of flight but unavoidable from Manchester. What a lovely suprise to see the Athina Hotel looking spotless, with friendly staff and a welcome breakfast awaiting. The hotel is central for the beach, tavernas, bars and 10 mins walk to the old town. We found a good bar near the hotel called The Peacock Bar, try it you will get a warm welcome from George.

We could not find anything negative about the hotel and would not hesitate to book again when we visit Rhodes again.
