"Filoxenia Apartments review"
Overall Hotel Rating:
The Filoxenia Hotel is a family run hotel and are excellent hosts. Nikos and family cannot do enough for guests and are very welcoming. Although the hotel is situated at the very beginning of Tholos, it is only a short walk to the main body of the town. The Hotel is clean and well maintained with a bar, a pool, small play area for kids and a mini golf course.
The resort, however, is a different matter. If you are looking for a quiet holiday with not much to do, then Tholos is the resort for you. If, like my husband and I, you want more to do that sit around a pool all day and go for a quiet drink in a local bar in the evening, then avoid this resort like the plague.
Having said that, there is a regular bus service to Rhodes Town and is around 2.10 euros per person per single trip.
There is virtually nothing to do in Tholos, probably due to other Hotels in the resort being All Inclusive which is sadly, killing off the local businesses. The few pubs that are still open are excellent and prove to be better value for money that those in Rhodes Town. Billy's Place is a lovely bar with friendly and welcoming staff. A word of warning though, if you go into Rhodes Town, please be aware that the bars and resturants around the fountain in the Old Town are expensive, and although they are keen to reel people in, check out the prices before purchasing food and drink.
Overall, the resort Tholos would suit those who want a quiet holiday and I would recommend the Filoxenia Aparthotel.

The hotel Filoexenia I found was about the best one in the resort, my wife and I had a look in all the others as we like to do and ours was about the best, the rooms were nice and clean and the maids were very pleasant as they went about their duties, the beds were clean and changed regulary as was the towels, although I've never come across towels like them, they were so hard they felt like sheets of thick cardboard where you could only pat yourself dry rather then rub yourself on pain of loosing the top layer of skin,We're not the sort that lay around the pool all day, or sit round the hotel bar as we like to get around and see as much as we can, so we didn't get to know the staff as other guests seem to have done, but what contact we did have they all seemed nice enough.
and now about the resort I would like to say after reading the reports on Tholos in this column, all I can say is I must have had my holiday in a different place, nowhere did we see the so called night life that was mentioned, Ok most hotels had the weekly B B Q and the Greek night and the bingo but that was the extent of it, we did find the tavernas very nice with the prices being reasonable, Goodfellows we thought the best, and ate there reguarly the mousaka especially good, the beach is made up of sand and pebbles and gets deep very very quickly, five feet off shore and you're five feet down.
as for someone in these revues saying that there was a good local bus service, again I must say I was in a different resort. we've travelled a good part of the world and I found the bus service in tholos the worst I've ever come across.you would think that the powers that be would make sure that the public transport on a island that totally relys on tourism would have the best public transport possible, more then once we stood at a bus stop, time table in hand for over one and a half hours waiting for buses that never came, but then when you did strike it lucky, ( Ok it's an old joke but true in this case two would come around the corner together )
we like to travel around on the local transport, buses, trains, taxis and so on and mix with the locals, and never go on the organised tours, but with hindsite we would have used them in Rhodes. This is the first time I can remember ever being bitten but this time both my wife and I got bites all on our feet and legs, as did most other people we spoke to, not by masquitoes but by gnats and some were quite badly bitten.
The only other places I can recommend visiting on that east side of the island other then Rhodes Town would be Triandra, where another couple that we met up with, and ourselves, had a couple of nice nights.
and another place, the airport village of Paradissi, is up the hillside behind the main street, where you will find a nice church and ( OK it may sound corny but when you're running out of ideas ) the most beautiful cemetery i've ever seen, most of the graves are raised, made of marble and with photos of the people computerised on them, and everyone of them festooned with flowers.
the actual village of Paradissi is larger than You may think and is just like a unspoiled Greek village should look.
The exchange rate was 1.46euros to the £1

without doubt the worst all inclusive holiday ever created no entertainment, no fish on menu, no drinks are free other then beer, local vinegar wine, lowest ever quality brandy and of course 2 euro a bottle ouzo. However all chips, nuggets, burgers and pizza are available.
Air conditioning is charged at 5 euro per day ranging to 10 euro a day depending on size of accom. Kettle 2 euro day, fridge 5.50 a day, mini golf, chess. draughts, table tennis and bowls are all available at rip off prices. All inclusive is only till 22:30 when then they take great pride in charging you 1.30 for a coke and 3 euro for a beer. Please please please consider margate in a force ten gale before you consider staying in this place.

We arrived at the filoxenia in the early hours and both nikos and eve were there to greet us and made us feel very welcome, over the week we were there they couldnt do enought for you and were very helpful. The rooms are very clean and basic, and the cleaners are in everyday. They do charge you 5.50 euros a day to have the cooker and fridge turned on, which we thought was a bit dear, so didnt bother because the food and drinks are so cheap, we liked to eat out every night and Goodfellas and Mikes Place were particular favourites of ours, and it was also a welcome relief from the sun to have a drink in the hotel bar. They have started to do AI this year and although we were'nt, the other guests who were did a lot of complaining about choice and availability, but I think with feedback from guests they should have it sorted better soon.
We din'nt think a lot to the beach, to many ants and pebbles, so stayed by the pool most days. You do need to hire a car or jump on a bus to explore a bit, as there isn't anything to do in the resort itself and it can get a bit boring.
There was a list in the rooms which detailed evening activities such as quizzes, kareoke and bbqs, but the only that happened was the bbq, so we were disappointed with that as there are only a couple of bars in theolos. It is a good resort if you want a relaxing sunbathing holiday and the accomadation is plenty adequate, Nikos, Eve and sons certainly helped make our holiday, we had a lot of laughs with them.Things you do need to take are, mosquitto spray and plug-ins, because they are viscious! a kettle (or pay 3 euros a day to hire one) travel iron and hairdryer. There is a library, so you don't need to take any books as there is something for everyone and saves luggage space for all the cheap duty free!

The apts are basic but clean and suit the purpose for a S/C holiday.
What put a dampener on what could have have been a great hol was the following.
1) Be warned they will try to rip you off and overcharge you at every opportunity, as we were leaving they tried to say we had to pay some taxi charge and presented us with a reciept even though we had coach transfers. HW overcharged us on a couple of occasions which on reflection were on purpose.
2)A friendly young dog haung about the complex, no harm to everyone and a number of guests got to no it - it made peoples holidays to an extents, the cleaners howver didnt like it and tried to hit it with a broom ect..this would cause any dog to bark at them. After 10 days and a minor incident of dog barking, the following morning i heard the dog barking at about 3.30 am. The next day the dog was no wher to be seen, any where in the resort either. . i leave the rest to your imagination, needles to say this upset a number of guests, particuarly when they tried to hit the dog over the head with golf clubs in front of everyone.
If you are an animal lover do not go to this apt, it is sad to see how they treated animals.
On a positive note tholos is a nice quiet resort, if thats what you are looking for. The best place to eat is the utopia bar and restaurant, next to the filxoenia. Savvas is very freindly, provides great service and the food was miles above anything else - no ";tourist food"; but well cooked family greek food without chips and knorr rice that you seemed to get every where else.

Tholos was one of the most relaxing places that we've been to the greeks were all so friendly espcially at the BELLA VISTA we were made to feel part of the family we strongly suggest you go and meet mama, papa, tina and maria you can just sit and watch the world go by.I thought all of the tarvernas were enjoyable, also you should try The SEAVIEW brill stiffado again very friendly.
The FILOXINA was a fab base for our holiday NICKOS,EVANGALINA,THE BOYS and not forgetting COSTAS behind the bar were perfect hosts nothing was to much trouble for them even down to nickos driving to pardisa to fetch me some backlava as i couldn't get any in the resturants. We will most definatly go back!
the only draw back was the beach wasn't up to much but hop on a bus to rhodes town or if you like then you can catch the ferry to falaraki which is alovely beach.
WE HOPE IF YOU ARE OFF TO THE FILOXINA YOU ENJOY AS MUCH AS WE DID !!!!!!!!!!!!!!>

Overall Hotel Rating:
My teenage children and I had a wonderful two weeks at the Filoxenia - the owners and staff were the most cheerful and helpful hosts I have ever encountered on a package holiday; nothing was too much trouble. I'm disappointed and surprised to hear the accusatory remarks plastered by a fellow reviewer over this and other similar websites.
The apartments are roomy but basic - the kitchen facilities especially - but eating out is both inexpensive and a pleasure. The complex was quiet and friendly (even in August) with plenty of poolside room for everyone. Food in the restaurant/bar area is good and there are plenty of good restaurants within a ten minute walk of the complex.
Trips to recommend are the boat trips to Lindos and Symi - but beware the scuba/snorkelling trip as it was expensive and definitely not worth it as you spent a lot of time stuck on the boat within limited refreshments and even more limited shade from the August sun.
Catch the local buses into Rhodes Town and spend the evenings wandering around the town with the locals and fellow holidaymakers - there's a lovely atmosphere and lots more great restaurants.
Small critisisms of the Filoxenia would be the lack of air conditioning in the apartments and no freshwater pool shower. Big praise would go to the owners and staff - especially Costas who made the evenings a pleasure for everyone with his good humour and grace. When we left, the whole family and staff came to wave us off at 2am - how often do you get that on a package holiday? But that just sums up the family atmosphere at the Filoxenia.
Would we go back? Absolutely.
