Overall Hotel Rating:
This is a long one, but worth reading.
Options BandB of Half Board. We were bed and breakfast only (thankfully).
Well what can we say? When driving to the hotel in the early hours of the morning we became considerably worried when all of the bars, shops etc seemed to be getting fewer and fewer by the minute. We then travelled down an almost unlit 'counrty lane' and came across 'The Meliton'. It looked nice from the outside but the location really worried us.
We were given the key to our room which seemed to be very basic but ok.We had 2 single beds, (even though we booked a double) and a smaller fold up bed.The bathroom was clean, with towels. But they were like sandpaper. We have never known towels like it. We went to the bar and had a quick drink, then we got our heads down for a few hours.
Next morning we seated ourselves for breakfast........... This consisted of a paper thin ham and cheese roll, 1 small slice of bread, a portion of butter and jam.You then helped yourself to tea or coffee. Not a great meal to start the day with.
We decided to stay around the pool on our first day and were pleasantly surprised that even though it was now 10am we could get 2 sunbeds without any problem. A first for us, ever. The pool was a lot smaller than the brochure pictures showed, obviously taken with a wide angled camera. (But on saying that, the only times that the pool was ever crowded was on change over days when everyone seemed to be staying put.)
That evening we decided to stay and eat at the hotel as they had a board up saying that it was 'Greek Night' with a buffet and traditional dancing. All of this for a cost of 10 Euros each (about £6.50). It was due to begin at 8pm, at 8.45 they started bringing food out onto a long table. The choices were not too bad. You helped yourself except for the meat, which was served to you. 1 chop per person. Once the last person had taken theirs the table and remaining food was very quickly removed without the chance of 2nd helpings. What happened to the 'buffet?'The dancers then started, with the pressure to get up and join in a little too forcefull. Friends/family of the owners were arriving all the time and tables and chairs being moved for them. Even to the degree of when our table stood up to watch the dancers they actually took a chair from us to give to them!Once this finished it then turned into what seemed a family get together, which left a lot of us guests feeling a little out of place.
The next morning was when all of the tales from the other guests started coming:
*Poor evening meals/breakfast---a choice of 2 meals in the evening and as stated above for brekkie. If you did not want/like either of these you had to choose from the menu and pay for them additionally.
* Overpriced drinks, especially the bottled water (double the price, even though it stated on them what should have been charged).
*Repairs/faults in the rooms not being sorted. (Although we reported that our outside light was not working and one of our mattress' were lumpy, these were fixed the next day. The bulb changed and the fold up mattress put onto the single bed. Even though the extra mattress was very much smaller than the bed itself.)
We walked into town that night. 20ish minutes to get there, down the stated country lane. Only to find that there were about 12/15 restaurants/bars and a couple of huge hotels total. The people were very friendly, and the owner of 'Goodfellows' restaurant even gave us a lift back to our hotel after we had eaten. The only trouble was with the town, that once you had been there there was very little choice for the next time. When actually walking back of an evening it was very dark due to no street lights in places and therefore we mostly got taxi's. The cost of these varied between 3-5 Euros.
Over the next few days we sat back and watched all of the told tales come to life. Yes guests were complaining about different things and nothing was getting done.Yes the rows over the half board meals were getting worse. It was all quite entertaining but everyone had paid good money for their holidays and this is not what was expected. We met up with a great crowd of people and saw ourselves as convicts who were planning a 'break out'. It was all very comical at times, but again it shouldn't have been like this.
During our stay we noticed that the pool was becoming very cloudy with insects swimming/dead in the water. There was also a black 'tide' mark appearing around the inside edge of the pool. Nobody wanted to bring the hotel managers attention to this for fear of there being an argument. The pool may have got to this state due to the fact that every evening the filters/pumps were turned off.
If you are planning on going to The Meliton we would advise you to NOT to. IT was never our intention to hire a vehicle while we were on holiday but because of:
a) The location of the hotel
b) The atmosphere at the hotel
c) Tholos village being so small
we felt we had to and hired one for 5 days just to get away. So the hire of the car was additional funds.
We hope that you find this report useful.

Overall Hotel Rating:
The Hotel Meliton although a fair distance from the town, was very clean and tidy with good facilities for a C class hotel. The pool was good although shelving very steeply to 2.4 metres. We stayed bed and breakfast and the continental breakfast consisted of coffee, orange juice, a ham and cheese roll and a slice of bread with butter and jam. The rooms were a good size although much too hot( fans were available at 20 euros per week) and unfortunately overlooked the hotel bar(open till 1.30 am) The only problem with the hotel was the hot water tap which exploded on our 5 year old son who was lucky not to get scolded. The manager was not very helpful and just said not to use it until he could get a plumber(not much concern).
We found the best places to eat on Rhodes were the small Tavernas that didnt costantly hassle you to eat there. The best food was Lamb which yo order by the Kilo at 20 euros per kilo. more than enough for 5 with salad and a plate of chips. The best beach was Tsabiki beach just past Afantou on the east coast, the sea was very shallow until about 200 yards and the sunbeds were cheap.
The beach at tholos was shigle and sand and the sea was quite rough with waves of about 6 feet which the kids loved. Its well wirthwile to order a hire car ( we used Sixt at the airport) without a car the holiday would be really restricted.
Rhodes is nice althoug all around the island we found it dirty and lots of property was derelict. The weather was fantastic although too hot (over 100 every day)One place to avoid after 2.00pm is Falaraki for obvious reasons!!!! The valley of the butterflies(petaloudes) is well worth a visit.
