"Nirvana Beach Hotel review"
Overall Hotel Rating:
My husband, brother, his wife and myself have just come back from our holiday, we went to suprise my sister and her husband who live on another greek island and who were holidaying in Rhodes. When I explained the suprise to the staff at the Nirvana they couldn't do enough for us.
All the staff were very friendly. We arrived at the hotel at 3.15am and Nico the night watchman opened the bar for us to have a nightcap after our long journey. He was very helpful throughout our holiday, really nice man. The hotel is kept spotlessly clean, rooms are a fair size and comfortable, (the pillows are as hard as rock)all rooms have a nice balcony and are cleaned daily, clean towels daily and beds changed every other day. Be prepare to wait to be served at the bar if the dining room is open as Yannis has to clear there as well as run the bar, and he can get a bit tetchy, likes to think he's a bit of a lady's man and can be a bit 2 faced, but on the whole he's ok. I do think that they should put on some kind of entertainment a couple of nights a week, or if it rains (as it did for us 1 afternoon)organise something to keep the guests happy, luckily everyone had made friends so had a good chin wag.
The pool area is nice with a good pool and plenty of loungers and a shaded area. There is also a pool table and table tennis.
The hotel is in the flight path for the airport but you soon get used to the noise but it isn't that bad.
This is the first year they have been AI, The breakfast is the usual ham, cheese slices, bread rolls, and 3 not very nice cereals, fruit juice and tea/coffee, 2 mornings we had boiled eggs. Not a bad selection for lunch or dinner but after a few days you get fed up of seeing the same thing, although they taste nice be prepared for the food to be cold, I did mention to Yannis about cold food and for the rest of our holiday it was hotter.
Make sure you take plenty of insect repelent, not that it did us much good, we still look as if we have chicken pox.
The resort is very quiet, with not a lot to do, Mikes is good for a breakfast and Billy's for a nice steak, there is also Mambo's for a kareoke night (if you like them). Dont go to the butterfly village on a monday as it's closed, 1 couple took a taxi at a cost of 9 euros, the driver dropped them off and scarpered straight away (he knew it was closed, but it was a fare for him)they had to find their own way back and took them quite a while.
We hired an 8 seater and went around the island, Lindos is a must, it is beautiful.
I totally enjoyed my holiday and would go back to the Nirvana, but maybe having my family with me made it that little more special. Finally the suprise for my sister and husband they were totally gobsmacked.

Hotel Nirvana
Nirvana is a small, family run hotel, the owners and the small selection of staff make the hotel what it is.
I went with a friend, and booked a twin room although when we arrived we received a double rather than a twin. The rooms are basic but cleaned everyday, bathroom-we didn't have a shower curtain but managed by holding the shower head towards the back wall over the bath to maintain the water. Rooms have additional air conditioning at a price of 6 euro's a night, which is worth it!!
We took our holiday in middle of July, and it was pretty hot! Many people were burnt, I packed factor 25 and 15. After a few days I dropped down to 15, and got slightly burnt so back up to 25.
The pool is pretty big for the size of the hotel, situated next to a tennis court which is also available to use. With many sunbeds, and a covered shelter area for those hot moments!
The hotel has an outdoor area, which is beautifully decorated with a climbing plant with gorgeous pink flowers, petals drop frequently but this just adds to the effect.
The hotel is set back from the main road, surrounded by another hotel and fields. There is a walkway to the beach, do not go through the fields as they house snakes! The walk to the beach is less than five minutes, pretty windy (great for those wanting to surf!) on a pebbly/sandy beach with limited shade.
The hotel is close to the airport, and we got our own taxi upon arrival (taxi prices at the bottom of review) which took five minutes. Occasionally hear the flights leaving the airport over head, but soon did not notice it. The months of July and August the surrounding areas of the hotel are swamped with crickets, which make plenty of noise although only during these said months we were told.
The local shops/bars/bank machine plenty of choice for gifts and traditional items for sale at a reduced price compared with the prices in Rhodes Town, so check out these shops prior to your visit to town. There is also an excellent chemist, who speaks English well and is extremely helpful. You are able to purchase anti-biotic's here if required during your stay, as we did.
A visit to Rhodes town is a must, public transport isn't great but its cheap! It doesn't come to the timetable, we were waiting a good 20-30 minutes. But once you are there in the town its beautiful, from the harbour, to the town/shops, to the old town it is well worth a visit and plenty of buildings worth a photograph or two!
We had a day away from the hotel, and visited St.Anthony's Bay, beautiful and worth the trip. Although there is no wind here as it is pretty sheltered in a bay, and the difference in the heat compared to the hotel is drastic! Be warned!! We were also told that the Valley of the Butterflies were definiately worth a visit but we didn't get around to going.
Taxi ride from the Airport is 10 euro's.
Taxi ride there and back to the local hospital 40 euro's - just in case you need it and the taxi's generally wait for you. We were in, out and seen to in 25minutes one morning.
Taxi ride from Rhodes Town is 18 euro's.
We took a few taxi's over the period of our holiday, and majority of them were a hair raising experience!
We met many nice and friendly people on holiday, many of which were either couples or families and have continued to stay in touch with many of these.
All in all we had a wonderful holiday, with experiences to pass on to others. I hope that you do choose this hotel as it is worth it.

well what can we say having read previous reviews i wonder if we stayed at the same hotel.the 3 days we stayed there were a nightmare we payed all inclusive and basically got half board very limited ice cream for children only at infrequent times the food was abismal, rabbit stew for instance only continental breakfast, no entertainment, small pool limited sunbeds nothing else was very disappointed and eventually moved to another hotel on the other side of the island which was everythin this hotel was not would never recommend this hotel to anyone, it was like stepping back in time 30 years.

Overall Hotel Rating:
We booked allocation on arrival knowing we would end up in one of three hotels. We searched all three on the internet, and when we first found out we were in Nirvana I was slighly dissappointed as the others looked better on their webpages. However when we arrived in the resort I was glad where we ended up- the pool was lit up and the flowers outside made the hotel look very inviting.
Nirvana is a pretty little hotel at the far end of a quiet sideroad, next to a couple of fields used for hayfarming. It has a lovely pool area with sunloungers, only a two minute walk from the stony/sandy beach. The pool has a shallow end and shelves down to the deep end and is easy to get in and out of. There is also a childrens pool next to the adults and some tennis courts. We loved the hotel being so small as it was only a one minute walk to breakfast and the pool. As three women going together, two ended up sharing a double bed which was no major problem, but 3 singles would have been preffered!
The shower has no curtain- in the same room as the toilet, just a slightly raised floor, so as a result the whole bathroom gets wet each time you shower. We used the hotel towels on the floor for safety reasons, which were replaced each day.
Fans cost 3 euro a night to hire which was essential as we arrived in a heatwave and temperatures were at 45 degrees celcius.
Mostly English people in the hotel and a couple of Germans, everyone got on well as you would expect in a small and friendly.
A word of warning- bring some mosquito repellant and afterbite cream. During the heatwave there were zillions of mosquitos and a few people had been bitten so much that they looked like they had chicken pox. Obviously covering up in the evening and keeping the balcony door shut helps. The mosquitos will still get you- they got me in the few places i missed with repellant but damage limitation is the key!
Also be wary of the sun- we used factor 30 suncream and still managed to get burnt on the first day.
Breakfast consisted of breadrolls, butter, jam, cheese, ham, 3 types of cereal and 1 type of cake. Drink is tea- normal or fruit, coffee or that orange and grapefruit squash which is found at all hotels. There is a restaurant in the hotel which is open from 8.30ish in the morning where you can get a fried breakfast or anypart of it (this was about 4 euros with tea or coffee included). We ate dinner here a few times-chicken curry was a popular choice at around 6 euro with rice and chips included. I am a vegetarian, so requested rice chips and curry sauce, which was no problem and only 3 euros- bargain! Other things on the menu are salad, jacket potatoes, omlettes, greek foods, variety deserts.
The resort itself consists of about 7 restaurants and an equal amount of minimarkets. The restaurants were quite empty (apart from Billy's during an England game- this was in English, good atmosphere, with the lead up, Mike's also shows the football but it is in Greek and misses the first few minutes of the match). This may be because we went towards the end of the season or may be due to the fact that the bigger hotels are all inclusive. A warning to any vegeterians- twice I ordered rice and both times it had meat in it so this must be the Greek way of doing it.
If you would rather takeaway the man at the Tropical Inn was happy for us to takeaway pretty much anything on the menu. For any fish and chip addicts, they sell Pukka pies here which made one member of our party very happy!
All the beaches on the West of the Island (Where Tholos is) are stony, but all those on the East are sandy. There is a taxi rank at the entrance of Doretta beach hotel (10 min slow walk)with fixed prices for a variety of locations including Tsambika beach (25 euro) and Faliraki beach (19 euro). We went to Faliraki twice and would definiely recommend it- we got there at 10am- lovely long sandy blue flag empty beach (clubbers still in bed!), with 2 lifeguards, clear blue sea- sea was so clear and calm you could see loads of little fish. The seabed is pretty level- no major slopes, so you can walk out a long way to cool off.If you fancy a stroll there are plenty of shops and restaurants and takeaways, including Mcdonalds right next to the beach. The beach slowly fills then emptys again, but was never crowded (as in the Canary Islands). We had a chinese here in the evening which was a bit expensive, but enjoyed, and also found a supermarket which was much cheaper than those in Tholos- it's called Priceright, or something similar and is about a 5 minute walk from the other Faliraki shops/ 10 min walk from the beach. This is really worth a visit if you cannot afford to eat out every night, or even just before the beach, as mulitpacks of 12 cans cost the same as about 4/5 cans in Tholos- and even small differences certainly add up. We saw no trouble at all in Faliraki- do not let what you see in the media put you off as this kind of thing happens everywhere where pubs and clubs are, in the early hours of the morning, and you are only likely to see it if you are joining in!
We caught the local bus from the stop at the end of the road to Rhodes Town. There is a joke that the buses run on GMT- Greek Maybe Time and this was true as the bus came 40 minutes later than the hotel timetable said, but the half hour journey was well worth 1.9 Euro. You pay the conductor once you are on the bus, and the buses stop briefly and get moving quickly, so don't waste any time getting on or you may be left behind :). We got off the bus too late and ended up in the designer area, but walked for a while and ended up in the older town which we were aiming for. If you fancy a chinese (none in Tholos) then their is plenty of choice here, along with hundreds of other restaurants. We bought a few presents in the 1 euro shop- which is quite near McDonalds and worth a visit.
We enjoyed our trip to Marmaris- Turkey- loads of fake designer goods such as gucci watches, louis vuitton bags, clothing, leather goods, and cheap 24 carat gold. You can spend lira, euro or english pound here. You may get a culture shock- just think about what you would like to buy before you go and only look if you are really interested! We had a lovely day, but were let down in a couple of ways- first the thomson hotel rep told us that cigarettes were really cheap as if that was a reason to go there and failed to tell us about the 200 customs limit, and also the carpet shop which is the base for the day did a demonstration, said a necklace was 20 pounds- when we went to buy it they claimed it had just gone but they had a slightly longer one for 45 pound. This was clearly a lie- it was the same necklace and an inch of material clearly wouldn't cost an extra 25 pound. We would expect this in many of the Turkish shops but not the 'reputable' one which we were taken to by the Thomson rep and used as a base all day. Boat journey on the way back was a bit choppy.
We also did the discover Rhodes trip which was ok but wondered what our money was spent on as we had already paid quite a lot, then had to pay entrance fees at each site- which added up to quite a sum. The valley of the butterflies (or more correctly moths) is not suitable for the less mobile due to many large uneven slippery steps. Ignorant people of other nationalities poked the moths here, the resultant movement used up their vital enery reserves and made me angry so be warned! We saw an ancient site (Kamiros) in the midday heat at 40+ degrees celsius. This was too hot and the lack of shade made it unbearable. You also go on some windy high mountain roads, so if you suffer from travel sickness or vertigo, beware.
There are many things to do in Rhodes to keep you occupied, I advise checking out taxi prices before you book any trips, as a taxi to the valley of the butterflies was 9 euro each way- we could have saved a lot of money just doing this instead of the discover Rhodes trip as this was the main thing we went on the trip for.
Also on trips do not feel that you have to eat in the recommeded restaurants- there are other restaurants nearby if you do not like the set menu.

Just returned from one of the best holidays we have ever had!!!
A late deal with Thomsons took us, unknowingly, to the NIRVANA. Advertised in the brochure as ";small and friendly"; and this is what it certainly is.
Mary and Yanis, the owners were there almost 24 hours a day (or so it seemed) and were the perfect hosts, we were made to feel part of the family (of other guests). Caroline, Yanus and Mano could not have served us better in the bar The meals were lovely, with a good varied choice. Special nights were laid on,barbecue, steak night, quiz night
The whole hotel is spotlessly clean and well maintained, with a lovely swimming pool area. We ate out some nights, special mention goes to Goodfellows and Bella Vista for excellent meals and good value, also to Sam and George at Malibu Bar, great cocktails and wine!!!
A must do is to visit the old village the Taverna there does a fantastic Meze.
Thalos itself is a quiet resort, the beach is mostly pebbles but there is some sand. Some aeroplane noise, but it is not intrusive and did not spoil our holiday at all.
This reccomendation comes from us who have been hoteliers in Blackpool for the last 21 years, and have travelled to many and varied places.
