Lovely apartments but it is very quiet, that applies to the town too. Ther rooms are nice enough though and the complex is kept clean. It was really really hot though. Still, it wasn't too expensive so all in all great value for money.

We stayed at the Pelagos apartments in Skala on Kefalonia from 20/05/08 to 03/06/08 and had one of our best holidays yet. The family who own the apartments could not help us enough. They were kind, friendly and helpful at all times. The apartments are roomy and kept very clean. The addition of the pool is a real bonus, a good suntrap with an outside bar offering snacks, icecreams and drinks. The walk into the village is approx 10 minutes with wild fennel and thyme growing along the roadside. The location is nice and quiet in the evenings and I would not hesitate in staying there again. I miss it already!!! Skala is a little gem.

It's easy to see why Thomson ";dropped"; these apts from their 2006 brochure, and apparently they wont be in Kosmar's 2007 brochure.

Briefly, the accomodation (room 37) was easily the poorest we've ever stayed in in Greece (We've been using Kosmar for the last 8 years)The rooms on first inspection seemed ok, nice and big and airy, but the bathroom.....well, to start.... a lethally sharp glass shelf right next to the shower tray is not up to modern health and safety standards, especially with no shower curtain to stop the floor becomming the slipperiest i've ever encountered, the shower head attachment (broken) and again lethally sharp, You literally have to undress to use the toilet (unless you like your clothes/underwear soaking wet. There were only hand towels provided to dry-off with.

The beds were infested with bed bugs...the rooms themselves had ";RIVERS"; of ants parading through them up and down walls and also on the food preparation areas. At night the lights around the pool were permanently switched off, which wasnt so bad, except that the owner ";Hosed down the pool/patio area along with the stairs (marble) turning all guests into budding Torvil and Deans.

Around the pool were open service hatches/hose pipes etc etc just left in the walk ways, Apart from that it was just ";peachey";. And before you ask....No we didnt complain, But this is only a word of warning to those of you with kids, think twice before you book the Pelagos Apts. Otherwise we found the resort/beaches/food/tavernas pretty much as, has already been described previously. Very Good.

Hermes car rental was easily the best deal (approx 308 euros for 11 days) FULLY INSURED with NO Hidden Clauses for a new Fiat Panda 1.3 5 door a/c. The Guy was so helpful and honest. There is a fairly quiet music bar, can't remember its name, but it's across from a fast food place (Called Mc Bon's) The couple that run the place make the best Pina Colada's in the world, they're amazing, ps watch out for his homemade firewater that he gives you a taste of....Oh my God...it's eye-watering. We also found some of the ";REAL"; Greek hospitality on Samos that is only hinted at on other Greek islands.

All in all Samos is great, The Pelagos Apts ???? Well, I'll leave you to make up your own minds.

Over the years we have been to many of the Greek Islands and have to say that this is the most friendly and quiet we have been yet. Although not great for older children especially teenagers this is a must for those seeking total relaxation.

Everyone in Samos is so laid back. Samos is crime free and best of all they do not have people outside the tavernas trying to get you in. The owners always say hello as you pass and always ask how you are. As there is one main road leading through Kambos you often pass the same resturants and are always greeted the same.

As first time drivers abroad I would recommend Samos as the ideal place to start. The roads are not that busy and although there are a few places which are called the same on your map it is easy to get round the island. We ended up the top of the moment having a glass of Samos wine with a local family watching out over the mountains. No holiday company can give you this experience.

Don't expect to bring home many gifts for friends and relatives as there are only pottery shops about.

The food and wine in Samos is first class. Many times we were given free glasses of wine. The local made wine which is found in a plastic bottle is beautiful so don't let the packaging put you off.

The further you walk to the right of Pelegos the more restaurants you will find. At one point he road looks quite dark but bear with it for 5 more mins and there are loads more restuarants.

There is a local bakerey to the left of the apartments about 2 minute walk. You can but fresh rolls in the morning.

The apartments are more than adequate for a two week holiday. We did invest in the air conditioning in our second week and I must admit I wish we had had it all the time. The family that run Pelegos are great too. There is a pool bar but it does not open really. To be honest you save money in Samos as you go and get drinks from your apartments. We were lucky to have a apartment on the pool. The balcony was covered with grape vines. A good trick is to take some pegs to peg your towel to your sunbed as at times the wind can blow them off. There are a family of cats at Pelegos and if like me you are a cat lover you can get boxes of cat crunchies from the local supermarket. They also love a saucer of milk too !!!

The landing at Samos airport is a bit sharp but if you are prepared and you know this you will be fine. It seems like the pilot is taking forever to land. As I am afraid of flying this was a scary thought but to be honest it was not too bad in the end.

Enjoy your holiday to Samos - Bon Voyage

Just had a lovely two week holiday in Kambos. We stayed at the Pelagos apartments which were very clean, comfortable and spacious. The owners were very welcoming and friendly.

In the brochure Kambos was described as ";can get windy at times"; while we were there it was Very windy but this would be our only complaint apart from the journey home which was a bit of a nightmare but thats another thing!
The beach in the resort was lovely with plenty of sunbeds although the sea was freezing cold you soon cooled down after a dip.

We hired a moterbike for a few days to explore the island then changed to a jeep as it was windy on the roads. Samos Town was nice for a bit of shopping, Pythagorio was a lovely place it had some lovely cafe/bars you could just chill for ages watching the yachts coming in and out of the harbour. The small mountain village of Manolates was a must see for us, quaint and typicaly Greek, the apple pie there was fantastic! We went on the trip over to Turkey which we would highly recomend, had a brillient day there.

There are plenty of restaurants/tavernas in Kambos we never had a bad meal in any of them but our favourites were 'the blue bucket', 'Rinas' and 'Leonidas'. We tried Chesters it was very nice but no better than any of the others in the resort.

All in all we had a fantastic holiday in Samos it has'nt been our favourite Greek island (we've visited a few now) but we would recomend this friendly island to anyone.

The Pelagos Apartments were very clean and are positioned at the 'quieter' end of the resort. They were cleaned 2/3 times a week. I would certainly stay there again if I was returning to Kambos. Kambos is a place to visit for a relaxing holiday as there is little or no nightlife other than local Tavernas, which suited us fine. The beach across the road from the apartments was always quiet even in the height of summer, however it shelves very steeply and families with young children would have to be careful.

I would recommend hiring a car. There is a hire company called 'Hermes' situated 1/2 mile away from the apartments and we found them very helpful. There is a man named Stefano who works there and upon hiring a car will provide you with a map and points out all the places on the island to visit. He was very helpful, far more so than the Thompsons reps. There is a small village called Ormos a few miles away from Kambos where we ended up each evening when we had the car. There is a Taverna on the front run by a slightly deaf Greek who is a one man cabaret act! Extremely friendly people.

Samos is a very small island and I would recommend it to families looking for a more relaxing holiday.

Pelagos - Our studio was lovely, clean and spacious. The owners were very friendly and welcoming. The pool is quite small but is great for a cool down.
Tavernas - Like most people we tried the ones mentioned on this site and in every taverna we went we experienced a warm and friendly atmosphere. Our favourite was Rina's(you get asked into the kitchen to choose your meal) this apparently has put some people off but try it......we thought the food was great.
Beach - being a bit of a beach bum I was initially disappointed with the beach but once I realised how far away Psili Ammos beach was to walk (more like an hour plus not 40 mins as stated in this site!!)I grew to love the beach!, the water is crystal clear and there are loads of fish to see. It won't put me off going back, just hire a sunbed (4 euros for 2 and a brolley)get some water type shoes that protect your feet from the stones (I know I'm a bit of a girl!!)and enjoy it!

Car hire - Hermes without a doubt...enough said.
Supermarket - We used the one on the right as you leave Pelagos, the men that worked there were lovely and generous and it was a pleasure to have met them.

Finally you have to visit ";ESPEROS"; bar. Don't be put off by the loud English music. The mad bar man ";Lazarus"; and the owners ";Nikolas"; and ";Lyn"; will make you feel really welcome. Every one there made the holiday for us really special and we thought they deserved a special mention. If you do go say hi to them from us and tell Lazarus ";he's the man!!";

Just got back from our first visit to Samos. Had chosen Kambos and Pelagos from reviews on this site. Thank you - the best Greek Island hoilday ever, and we have had a few.

Note: Thompson is pulling out of Kambos from next year. The Pelagos will be in the Kosmar brochure next year, don't know about the other places.

Pelagos was shared with Scandanavian Tui companies so mix of UK, Swedes and Danes. No problem at all.
Good clean and spacious studios. Good size showerrooms (and we pay a fortune for ";wet rooms"; in uk!)

Did not need the a/c though fitted. Nice veranda well shaded by well; covered pergola.

Pool fine with a good deep end and a separate small but adequate paddling pool with gate.

Did not hire a car, thogh met Stephanos from Hermes having a meal at his mothers taberna- Anna's. Others confirmed the good deal and advice he offers.
We walked to Ormas - about 45 minutes, with short cuts across the hairpins if you look carefully, and steps down into Ormas square.Used beach east of Ormas, bit pebbley but very very quiet.

Also walked up to Marathokombas. Took 90 minuts up road. Pretty little town/large village, not touristy. Came back down the old donkey track (now a 4x4 track) which half the distance and a nice walk. if you know what to look out for there is the old communal wash house in good repair at the bottom of one of the short cuts and also, on the main road, the chimney of the old water mill similar to the one at Plakias. Logic suggests the the small track opposite the mill will be the donkey track/short cut up to the village but not sure of this!

Also walked West from Pelagos, through Kambos and through Votsalakia. (Anna's taberna is on right just after the church).

Used the beach just opposite the Pelagos. Mix of strips of nice, clean, fine (and very hot)sand and pebbles with plenty of trees to give shade. Beds and umbrellas available (4 Euros?. Easy entry to sea but very narrow shallow strip then shelves qhickly to about 2 meters. Once out about 15 metres there can be a fairly strong cross current so take care.
Also watch the wind. It is warm and pleasant but can take hats, lilos off to Turkey very quickly. Saw a lilo, luckily empty, pick up speed to about 20/30 mph as it escaped.

Used the minimarket just to the right (west) of Pelagos. A 1.5l water bottle of wine from the barrel was less than 3 euros and probably one of the nicest red wines I have tasted anyway -truly a Nectar (could not find a barrel wine to match it, despite much research).

Eating out was a delight as usual. We found earlier reviews helpful, though of course it is always subjective.
Easily the best for us was Anna's. Old traditional. Under the trees, no menu - look in the oven. Anna cooks helped by husband. Bill totted up from plates on table. Not many of these around now.

Also liked Abatzi Garifalia(Stella), Soupouros (Blue bucket- Mario and Costa), Leonidas (family run), Muses (for the stuffed courgette flowers!) and Nick the Greek for a nice fish plate.
The ChristoPetros (?) just past/east of Nick's also looked interesting.
Chester's not my cup of tea but others (especially with kids) do recommend it.

I would have tried for lamb chops at the greek grill snack bar in the row af shops etc just before Anna's but ran out of time. (not designed for tourists It is where the taxi drivers etc. eat - so usually the best lamb chops around!)

As you can see, we loved the place and might even sneak another week in later in the year.
And thanks to all who wrote the earlier reviews that helped us have a great week, Hope this one helps someone. Yassus

This was our second vist to samos and the pelagos apatments. we are also going back again in may 2005. the people are the friendliest you could meet, especially when you are going back for the second time. the apartments are very clean and not too big so it is a great place to make friends and the small pool is ideal for children to play.

Some of the best places to see are Psili Amos which is just down the coast and has a loveley sandy beach. The village of Limiones is also loveley (is is just a bit further down the coast from Psili Amos).
The little fishing village of Ormos which is about a 25 minute walk away in the other direction is also worth a visit.
Pythagoria, Ireon and Potami are also very nice.
It is well worth hiring a car and exploring the little villages inland too.
Good places to eat are 'the blue bucket', Nick the Greeks (great for the kids as it is right on the beach and they can play outside).
We found Chesters very overated and expensive and were not impressed at all even though everyone else seems to rate it.
Our favourite was Muses which is situated just a few minutes off the main street (it is signposted). The food is very good, and as it is slightly off the beaten track it is lovely place to sit and eat.(get there early if you like lamb in the oven)
We can't wait for May this year!!!

I booked this holiday last minute and it certainly met my criteria for a quiet and relaxing week away from it all We had two studios - they are clean and comfortable and can accommodate three people quite easily. As usual in Greece they do not appear to use fabric conditioner and therefore the towels can be a bit abrasive and small.

The pool is fairly small but great for cooling off and sunbeds available whenever we wanted them. The pool bar was not open much but there is a mini market and bakery nearby if you wantsnacks such as icecream or a cold drink. The beach and sea opposite the apartments is exceptionally clean. The scenery perfect.

Pelagos are situated at one end of the resort and more tavernas, life at the other end but the beach there is stoney. Sunbeds at Chesters taverna about 100 mtrs to the right from Pelagos are the most comfortable! Plenty of tavernas to chose from for authentic Greek food. Chesters is a bit more cosmopolitan had very comfortable seating,(Canadian owned, english, dutch and albanian staff - all characters and very friendly. Neil prepares great crepes for desert and is an exceptional character. Their Greek night is very good. You can also go on a snorkling trip with them at 20 euroes each - again good value.

We were only there for a week so didn't go on any trips. If you want to walk to Psili Ammos go early - nearly made it but the heat got too much. My 14 year old was a bit bored but for total relaxation I would recommend this resort and apartments to all.

Pelagos apartments are very clean and tidy with everything you require. We had a 1 bed apart this was fine and spacious.
The apartments are at one end of the resort with a minimarket close by 100metres and a bakery at 50metres.

The resort of Kambos had everything that we required for a great time, the only down side is it lacks any authentic character as it is purpose built and there is a 10 to 15 min walk into the centre of the resort with no pavements. The resort appears to never get crowded.

Eating out is great with most restaurants that we tried being fine. We thought the best especially if you have youngsters was Chesters never a bad meal here, and for authentic teverna type food Muses was good and cheap, this is up a lane near Hermes car rental. We were dissapointed in the meals at the blue bucket over cooked cheap cuts of meat. And Nick the Greek we thought along with others wasn't as good as previous reports suggest.

We hired a car and went round the island found the best beach by far psimi amos near pythagorion not the one near kambos, in fact if we returned to Samos, which we will, we would stay at pythagorian it has more character and is set around a harbour.

All in all though, one of the best hols we have had.

We got a late booking to Samos - we had never heard of it before we went. We expected basic accommodation and were pleasantly surprised when we were allocated Pelagos, which were in the Portland Direct brochure, although they are in Thomson for 2005.

We had Apt. 6, which was in a lovely position next to the swimming pool with a patio shaded by a pergola - ideal for taking refuge from the mid-day sun!

The apartment was spacious and linen was changed 3 times the first week, although only once the second week. We were surprised to find air conditioning was available, although thought the cost of 6 Euros a day was a bit steep. There are several cats roaming around and one had 3 kittens while we were there; they could be a nuisance if you don't like cats. The pool bar was not open on a regular basis and did not sell snacks or even ice cream, although there is a supermarket about 3 minutes walk away.

We went for a complete rest and certainly got that. The hardest decision during the day was whether to stay by the pool or cross the road to the beach. I have never seen a beach so quiet during peak holiday season.
We hired a car for 2 days from Stefanos at Hermes (he asked me to mention his name on this site!) and spent one day going along the north coastal road to Samos Town (very busy and not as nice as Pythagorian - in our opinion). We went to Potami and Manolates and saw beautful views. The next day we touried the southern road to Pythagorian and Ireon. On both days we ended the journey at Ormos for a drink and to watch the fishing boats landing their catch.

In the evenings we went to several tavernas. Our favourites were: Souporos (otherwise known as 'The Blue Bucket' because one hangs from a tree outside). It is opposite Angelo's - another nice one on the beach. We went to Reina's and had a good meal but were plagued by cats and dogs which sat round our feet and on the wall by us, which I did not enjoy. Chester's Greek night and Greek Buffet were great and we went another night to sample the full menu and were not disappointed.

We went to Nostos and really enjoyed the atmosphere. We had to wait for a table, but sat at the beach bar and did not mind the delay - the food was worth it. We saw the most magnificent sunset from the terrace. It is about 30 minutes stroll from Pelagos but well worth it. We went back on our last night.

We went to New Centre Cocktail Bar and were warmly welcomed by Parachos and Mirta every time. The music was great. We also went to Cosmos, although it was always very quiet and Esperos near the Pelagos.

Although I went with my daughter who is a student and used to lots of nightlife, she enjoyed her holiday as much as I did.

The people were so friendly, the food was great, the atmosphere so relaxing and the scenery so beautiful, I would recommend this island to anyone, except those with young children as the beach shelves quite steeply at Kambos and the current can be strong.

I can't say I would go back as I like to visit different places, but maybe one day ......

I booked this holiday as a last minute break for me and my two daughters, not sure how they would like as they are more used to go to busier resorts, but what follows is my daughters opinion of the holiday.

This is an island to go to if you want to relax and unwind, not only are the people there lovely the island itself is beautiful. it may look simple but there is always something to do there, whether it be explore the island or lay on the beach and get a nice tan. There are a number of place to eat the best one has got to be chesters, the staff are friendly and will take time to talk to you and get to know you during your stay, plus they will go out of there way to make sure you are happy with there service.

By the way they are already planning on going back next year.

Our studio at the Pelagos Apartments was very clean and comfortable for 2 people although 3 might have found it a little overcrowded. The owner, Katerina, and her assistant, Poppy, are both really friendly and helpful and worked very hard to keep the whole complex looking good. There are beautiful roses and climbing plants all around the studios - roses seem to be a feature of Samos and we saw them at their best in May.

The resort is not a traditional Greek village and is strung out along the main road but it is very attractive and, in May, very quiet. The beach near our apartment was unspoiled, sandy and clean with only a handful of people to share it with. I guess it will be busy later in the year but the resort is essentially a laid-back place for anyone looking for a stress-free, quiet break.

There are lots of tavernas to eat in. We used this site to guide us but really it is hard to choose between them for quality and price. The only place we really wouldn't recommend is the";Muses"; which is off the main road. Maybe they were having a bad day but we found the food and service both lacking. The ";Akrogiali"; had a particularly nice atmosphere and we spent our last evening there in good company. The average cost of a 2 course meal and some wine for two was around 25 euros although we had a meal for 4 in Ormos( half a mile away) for the same amount at a taverna run by a very deaf, non English speaking Greek who is the local character and provided me with a memorable omlette that included the chips I ordered INSIDE the omlette! It tasted alright though and we all had a laugh.

We hired an open top car for one day for 29 euros from a nice man at ";Hermes";. It was the easiest car hire experience we have ever had - no deposit required, unlimited mileage. The roads are spectacular if a little scary but ok as long as you drive slowly. There was hardly any traffic. Many people hired scooters or motor bikes without problems although Thompson don't recommend it.

We had push bikes for a couple of days from a place almost next door to the Pelagos for only 5 euros a day. Biking is a great way to enjoy the coastal area which is truely beautiful with fields and hedgerows full of wild flowers and you can always walk up the hills like I did if you are not super fit. Balos to the east and Limnionas to the west are bikeable and worth the effort.

We didn't book any trips with Thompson but people who did enjoyed them although they were quite expensive.
Our car trip to Manolates on the north coast was amazing.
And if you like ice-cream, try ";The One"; which is masses better than a cornetto and only costs 1 euro.
You will be unlucky if you don't have an enjoyable holiday in Kambos.
