"Evelin Hotel And Apartments review"
Overall Hotel Rating:
Studios at hotel Evelyn are very clean but fairly small and basic.(no corksrew, knife to cut bread etc) However, hot water with good pressure all of the time and 2 towels each not the norm for Greece. Pool area quite nice but they do need to get more new sunbeds as some are very tatty. The airport behind is not a problem but the road noise can be annoying with lots of squealing brakes and hooting at the traffic lights. George at the pool bar is always smiling and Maria on reception in the afternoon is agreat mine of information. Hotel owners a bit strange, not the usual Greek friendliness.
We ate at many of the places recommended on this site but really liked Appolonia the best as it was so comfortable. We walked up to the top of the hill in front and also to Ireon and back but on the whole it was too hot for walking. The bus to Samos town stops right outside the studios and is a very good ride for three euros return per person.

Fantastic!
George at the Pool Bar says it is his fault if you don't have a good time! I don't think it's possible not to have a good time if you use the Evelin Pool Bar at any time during the day or night.
Pythagorian is about a 20-25 minute walk away, all flat, or E2.50 taxi ride. Plenty of bars, shops, banks and tavernas in town.
We hired a jeep for the day from Evelin Car Hire, the jeep we had was to be honest a wreck. Altho the jeep the other members of our party had was fine. Suggest you check out exactly what you're hiring. Value for money was good tho, we went to Samos Town (old and new), much the same as any other Greek Island Capital. Kokkari was nice, excellent Giros Pitta with Home-made chips! Visited the waterfalls, quite a journey on foot to get there after parking jeeps. Only for the VERY fit and agile!
We tend to go to a different Island each year, but would go back to Samos and Hotel Evelin tomorrow, just to experience more of George's hospitality. We stayed in a studio overlooking the airport runway, which didn't cause us any problems at all. Was a little worrying one morning when lying on the beach and a plane didn;t take off until nearer the end of the runway!
The hotel and pool are kept clean, sunbeds could do with some attention, the staff are all friendly (esp. George and Maria at the bar), all the Samos people seem to be friendly (including the ladies sitting on their doorsteps in Samos Old Town saying ";Kalimera"; as you walk by.
The holidaymakers staying at the Evelin were also very friendly, people from Sweden, Germany, Holland as well as all over the UK chatted together with George and Maria at the late night hotel bar sessions!

Samos is a fantastic island. Having been to many others, its rates as one of the best.
Pythagorian has the prettiest harbour ever, lined with bars and tavernas with boats moored along its length. The atmosphere is great and as always the Greeks make you more than welcome. Couldnt fault Kosmar, the welcome meeting was very informative, although we were disappointed that the Greek night wasnt on as it was late in the season. We did the round the island coach tour and although it was a full day, it wasnt at all boring as some trips are.
The island is so pretty with wonderful buildings, and the stop off at the winery for tastings didnt go amiss! There is a pottery en route where you can pick up a bargain compared to the shops in town. The airport was a joy. On the way home we hardly queued, there was only one girl checking everyone in and she was like lightning. Its a large, airy building with plenty of seating and a good duty free. It only felt like minutes and we were boarding. Also bear in mind that Pythagorian is only a max of 10 mins from the airport which is a real plus on the way home. In fact its proximity to the airport becomes clear when youre laying on the beach and the planes take off right over your head. It didnt seem to bother anyone, in fact it gave you something to look at other than your book and there werent any night flights.
Onto the Evelin Hotel. Im afraid we wouldnt stay there again. Its perfectly adequate, but it lacked something and there were rules for everything (except for people coming home at 2am, chatting and slamming doors!) There was no air con, something we didnt think would be important in September but it was baking.Getting ready to go out in the evening was hell, especially having to use a hairdryer, and believe me I wouldnt have if i could have got away with it. The breakfast wasnt worth getting up for and weve have many a Greek breakfast on other islands. You have to put your sunbeds away at the end of the day, no food or drink in your rooms, you must never remove your room key from the hotel, the list goes on, everywhere you go theres a notice. It was clean enough but not as clean as some, and the worst bit for us was right outside the hotel was the islands only set of traffic lights, which meant lots of squeeling brakes, horns and racing away at the green light. No snoozing round the pool im afraid.
However, the hilight for us was the pool bar which is run by George and Maria, a great double act. Every evening before going into town and again on our return, we'd have a few drinks there and were made fantastically welcome. George does a great cooked breakfast and has a Souvlaki night once a week. Maria speaks perfect English and has a wicked sense of humour. We met some great people, hello Malcolm and Lyn and too many others to mention. We would definately return to Samos but not to the Evelin

Overall Hotel Rating:
Stayed in a studio on top floor overlooking airport runway, very entertaining watching takeoffs and landings. Noise not really an issue as it all happens within seconds and there are no night flights.
We were extremly disappointed that there was no air con as advertised in Kosmars brochure, taking that issue up with them at present but no satisfaction as yet. We did hire a fan at 3 euros / day. For a studio the room was quite large.
Maria on reception was always friendly and liked to tell us about various places to visit.
The bar is slightly away from the hotel and thererfore there wasn't any noise disturbance. George and Maria who run the bar are very friendly and entertaining, both very proud of the history of their island.
A 25 minute walk takes you to the town and harbour. Nothing much to choose between the many tavernas, all very good. Our favourite was Symposium, turn left before the harbour and its about 25m on the right.
3 euros for a taxi back to the Evelin is well worth while.
Local buses are not reliable, typically greek!!The nearest beach is about 10 minutes walk, 6 euros buys 2 sunbeds and umberella for the day plus use of shower and changing cubicle. The beach cafe does excellent snacks cheaply.
We took the round the island trip but it tried to pack too much in and became a bit of a military exercise. Likewise the boat trip to Patmos was an experience. It is advertised at taking 2 hours but actually is 3. It was extemely rough and on the return journey we could not sit on the sun deck as we were being soaked. If you're not a good traveller don't go!All in all an excellent holiday. P.S. if you like all things archeological Samos has it all!
